I asked my son in law to fill my bird feeder and a bit later his wife looks out and says you didn't fill it! He says his Father in law told him not to as they waste it and it goes on the ground, so he just filled it half way! Dumb, dumb, it is the sunflower shells for the most part on the ground. I just wanted to smack my husband to make him wake up! He is lucky he isn't in a constant state of black and blue. I have yet to lay a finger on him after 56 years. I thought with age would come wisdom, but it is going the other way. Thanks for letting me let off steam! Now I have to take a step stool and climb on it if I want it filled. It will probably only last the birds a day and a half the way it is filled. I keep getting large bags of bird seed for Birthday and Christmas gifts I need to be using it up.

You be darn careful getting on a step stool. I know you love the birdies, I do, too; however, they'll be okay until you can get a helping hand.

I would smack him too. My DH always says "But I fed them yesterday" To which I always reply, "Did you eat yesterday? Are you going to eat today?"

SAN DIEGO Marine Maj. Brian Dennis told friends and family that he wanted one thing for the injured, abused dog he found in the desert in Iraq: the good life. That life began Friday afternoon when the Marine's best friend arrived to a celebrity-style welcome at San Diego's Lindbergh Field. "This dog who had been through a lifetime of fighting, war, abuse ... is going to live the good life," Dennis told his family in an e-mail from Iraq. The dog's arrival was the latest chapter in a remarkable tale of friendship and loyalty that began unfolding in October, a few months after Dennis deployed to Iraq from San Diego to work as part of the military team building infrastructure along the Syria-Iraq border and training Iraqi forces to take over. Dennis, 36, of St. Pete Beach, Fla., had volunteered for the assignment. It was a departure from his role as a fighter pilot. He had seen the country from the air. But on the ground, it was different. Dennis wrote stories home about the reciprocal relationship that desert dogs, strays wandering outside border towns, had with Iraqis. "The dogs get to eat the Iraqi scraps and have a home in the middle of the desert," he wrote in an e-mail. "The Iraqis get an incredible early warning system; these dogs hear anything approaching from miles away and go nuts and scramble to defend their territory." While on patrol in the Anbar province, Dennis spotted what appeared to be a gray and white, male German shepherd-border collie mix. He named the dog Nubs after learning someone cut the ears off believing it would make the dog more aggressive and alert. Within weeks, Nubs was greeting Dennis during routine patrol stops along border communities. The Marines fed him bits of their food, and by November, the Marine and his unit were keeping an eye out for the dog, who routinely chased their Humvees when they departed. Life on the run, however, was taking a toll on the dog. He had lost a tooth and been bitten in the neck. In late December, Dennis found Nubs near death in freezing temperatures. The dog had been stabbed with a screwdriver. Dennis rubbed antibiotic creme on the wound and slept with Nubs to keep him warm. "I really expected when I woke up for watch he would be dead," Dennis wrote. "Somehow he made it through the night." Dennis thought he had seen the last of the dog days later when his squad headed back to its command post some 65 miles away. He couldn't take the dog with him, and watched as it tried to follow the Humvees away from the border. Two days later, while Dennis and a comrade were working on a Humvee, he looked up and saw the dog staring at him. "Somehow that crazy damned dog tracked us," he wrote Jan. 9. But the reunion was short lived. Military policy prohibits having pets in war zones, and Dennis was given four days to get the dog off the base or kill him. The decision was easy: Nubs was going to San Diego. The logistics, though, were anything but easy. With help from his Iraqi interpreter, Dennis managed to find a Jordanian veterinarian to get the care and paperwork needed to get it to the states. He also negotiated the red tape to get the dog across the border into Jordan. His family and close friends helped raise the $3,500 needed to get the dog from Amman, Jordan, to San Diego, said his mother, Marsha Cargo. "I just can't believe it. Out there in the middle of nowhere these two find each other," Cargo said. At the airport, Nubs was greeted by Dennis' friends and a colleague, who has agreed to care for the dog and have it trained until Dennis returns in March from Iraq. Nubs wagged his tail as he was showered with attention from Dennis' friends. "We didn't expect him to be quiet this calm," said Marine Capt. Eric Sjoberg as he walked Nubs on leash outside the terminal. Also on hand were an animal trainer and a veterinarian, who examined Nubs shortly after he landed. Nubs arrived with a minor, lingering leg injury believed to have occurred during his days in Iraq. After rubbing Nubs on the head, Dennis' best friend Jeff Forrest bent down and picked the dog up. "OK Nubs, let's go home," he said. For now, though, Dennis will settle for the knowledge that Nubs is finally home Â and waiting for his master to follow him.

Ask for previous work references and his installation certification credentials. If he answers, "i been doing this all my life (or for 10-20-30 years) and have way to many satisfied customers to list just one or two", then indeed do wait for the floor guy or hire another competent installer/retailer to do it. I know alot of General Contractors who "have done floors before". We repair and replace their shoddy work all the time.

This is Magnaverde's sofa and follow are the instructions he posted at BHG and Picturesworth a million year ago - I still have this saved because someday I'm bound to have a piece to use this technique. Here's the process, as I originally described it on the AOL Decorating Board last year, and where the original post was unearthed from the AOL archives by the lovely and talented HOST HOME DECOR. She's the best. ....................... Forget all that nonsense about teensy bottles of expensive paint medium from the crafts store. You don't need anything more than regular latex semi-gloss paint--and a lot of guts. I found a beautiful Baker Chippendale camelback sofa, with cool curved arms and a fat down cushion, but it was covereed in a hideous glazed chintz in the ugliest colors I ever saw. I found some great yellow wool damask to reupholster with, but it would have cost me $3OOO for the job, so I painted my sofa instead. Everyone freaked out when I told then the plan, but it worked. I was planning on painting my room dark green, so I decided to go with the red leather look. First, I painted the whole thing with bubblegum pink semigloss latex paint, using the widest foam brush I could find, and brushing it on in long strokes front-to-back and up + down. Think of that as the primer coat. I let it dry 2 days, and sanded it super lightly with fine-grade sandpaper to get rid of the burrs--there were a lot. When I couldn't feel any more sharp things, another coat of paint, spread thin. Dried and sanded again. Then spread--with my hands--a thin coat of raspberry red semi-gloss paint I had deadened a little with brown to make it a little less vivid. Because it was a deep color, there wasn't much white filler in the paint, and it was almost like a glaze or stain, instead of paint, which is just what I wanted anyway. I just smoothed it on, like suntan oil, and worked it into the pink paint. I let it build a little thicker at the back, on the inside of the arms and at the back edge of the loose cushion, so that the paler, thinner red took on an air of wear at the high points. I let it dry 2 days, then CAREFULLY sanded the few new sharp things, and touched up those spots with my fingers. I let it dry 2 days, then waxed the whole thing with regular paste wax. After it was dry, I polished with a soft cloth, then dusted with talcum, and vacuumed it all off. It was a little stiff the first few days, but now it not only looks like red leather, it feels like it. This worked great on glazed chintz, and probably would work on any smooth fabric, except that some may have more burrs and therefore require more sanding, but I wouldn't try it on anything with a heavy texture. And no, the paint doesn't come off. And it's not stiff, either. Think about it--it's latex paint, and essentially, that's what's in those little bottles of fabric medium. Maybe it's just because I'm overtired. I think Palimpsest's GFY (all innocence nonwithstanding) is actually better. The more common interpretation might be pleasurable, however anatomically improbable and potentially sinful, if you think about it, assuming the SIL is a grown woman who wouldn't actually end up sullied or ruined by the process. Pal's version carries the lingering, unsaid, clause, "...but I don't." :) I remember when I was a child and there were workman drinking and cursing in the field behind our house. Our beloved housekeeper thought that was very inappropriate behavior to display by a family home, especially within sight and earshot of small children. She'd go on the backstep, where there was a good, direct view of the ne'er-do-wells, and stand squarely with her arms akimbo, announcing in a firm, carrying, no nonsense voice, "Jesus loves you!" I have never heard a more effective nor more strongly uttered curse. With that one innocent phrase, she wrapped them up and sent them on their way. There's power in those words! And a loudly implied, "...but I don't!"

Lower those feeders to a height you can reach without climbing. The birds won't object at all. I'm short and can reach to fill all of ours, which get filled on a daily basis or every other day as needed.

If that is the worst thing 'him' did yesterday, that wasn't too bad, was it?

Could it be that filling feeders is a woman's job? (Sorry guys). They say, "never send a man to do a woman's job........"
I did a search on that saying and found this funny blogger (link below) talking about her hubby shopping in preparation of an upcoming storm.

I agree...be careful. Here in S IN, the top of the ground has thawed in varying degrees making it quite slippery. Yes, is it possible to maybe fix the feeder lower so it is easier for you to fill?

If the bird feeder isn't high, the cats jump on it and get the birds. It doesn't hold all that much but looks like it does. I need a new feeder one that holds more. My husband has never in his life filled a bird feeder. I am sure from now on my son in law will fill it full when he fills it.

Can the feeder be attached somehow to a pulley that lets it come down to a level where you can fill it and then pull it up high again? Just a thought.

Oh yeah, smack him! I have had many "smackable" moments with my DH - sometimes I am amazed at my self-restraint.

You could remind his father-in-law that the ground feeders clean up what falls & it isn't wasted. Whose feeder is it, anyway? And remind the son-in-law whose good side he needs to be on!

Oh, this could get interesting!

ANYWAY, I was going to just put up an eye hook (ask your menfolk what they are if you don't know, ladies... hehe) and put a rope through it. Simple and effective pulley system.

And BTW, guys NEED $30k pickups to carry home 500 pairs of shoes for whom??? Maybe we should use the same argument: We need a BLACK pickup, and an EBONY pickup and an ONYX pickup... After all, you can't drive the white pickup after September...

I have a brick house and no close wood. Yes, I know what an eye hook is. I only have 6 pair of shoes, and he doesn't drink beer, or smoke or wear slippers. He can do his own back rub if he wants one! Bird feeder is mounted on a pipe made for a bird feeder.

Men. You can't live with them and you can't just shoot 'em.

I suppose you could mount a circle, like a big baffle, under the feeder- a big one- to make it impossible for the cats to get to the birds. It would also catch a lot of the seeds.

We have a pulley system on our big feeder and even with the pulley, it's hard to grab the nylon cord and pull it up without it feeling like you're either shredding the cord or going to pull the pulley right out. We have to lift the feeder up as we pull the cord to help it. I can't imagine what it would feel like with just an eye hook and NO pulley. We only mounted the pulley system because our housesitter didn't like climbing the ladder to fill the feeder when she was here alone and I don't blame her, the ground is a bit soft where all those hulls fall.

If the pipe is a couple inches in diameter, you could still put an eye hook in it, or a flag tie down, can't think what it's called. Cleet! that's it! Like you wrap the rope around to tie the flag or a boat down. You really need to stay off that step stool. Since "him" said not to fill it, tell him if he doesn't fill it, then he doesn't eat. And I only pull out the big guns like that statement when I am royally po'd over something. It's not something I do very often at all, so it gets my point across.

smack him! men need to know and often benefit from knowing when they do something wrong. they might even take note of what they should change in themselves :-) if they don't then after repeated warnings they find out...

my DH aquirred a saying about crossing me LOL...'she's the child of a 3rd generation chicago politician, her family is all lawyers, her dad runs their family funeral home on the side, she has a degree in bio sciences w/ equal training in chemistry and knows how to use that knowledge. she has the ways & means to get rid of someone.' AND I DO AND HE KNOWS IT LOL!

we have a great mutual respect for one another so we never even have issues like this ~ liz
