can you tell the difference w/o the doors/drawers open? if not, I'd go for it. that'd be a big savings.

It's a lovely display and for $800, it's a steal of a deal. Unfortunately I don't see that wall opposite a wall with inset cabinetry. The totally matching integrated frig suggests that you aren't going for an "unfitted farmhouse kitchen." I can see the island as inset, because the island can be it's own little jewel-like piece of furniture, but without going for an unfitted look I don't see the completely different style of cabinetry on the other wall. Sorry to be a party pooper. :( JMHO.

Thanks for the advice about not mixing in the insets.I'll try to post a closer up picture of the doors later. Does anyone have an idea of the cost to replace the doors on a set like this? There are 4 doors approx 18" wide and 30" tall, 2 glass doors of the same size, , 3 deep drawers 30-36" wide, and 10 shallow drawer fronts approx 18" wide.

Also, do you agree that the hood needs to be replaced? I have never seen a hood like this in the kitchens on this website and much prefer the rectangular type ones we see here. It is growing on me though, perhaps I have just looked at the picture too long.

desertsteph, my ovens will fit in that cavity, it is just a face frame that can be replaced over shelves that can be moved.

I found a picture of this hood with the shorter molding only over the hood and not over the adjacent cabients like in my display above.The company is Aya out of Toronto area, unfortunately they do not have any distributors on the East Coast any more.

You're talking about getting a really good deal on cabinets, but the cabinets will almost 100% have to be remade to work in your situation. It's like you're car shopping for a nice sedan for basic transportaion and you're in the dealer's lot where one of the nicest and biggest SUV's is discounted 50%. It's a great deal---IF you need an SUV. If you never get any winter weather, your garage isn't big enough to park it and your work is 50 miles away single trip, then even 50% off a SUV makes no sense for you to buy.

Focus on buying what is going to work in YOUR kitchen. Or else change your vision statement to work with the cabinets as is that you are considering buying. There are way too many differences between what exists there and what you want that you really aren't going to end up saving any money by the time you remake them.

By the time you pay for new door and drawer fronts and paint the boxes you may not be saving much money and you'll have cabinets that don't match the rest of your kitchen. Do you have time to get a quote for the doors and drawers before you commit? It's my understanding that they are a significant factor in cabinet pricing. I agree with Laxsupermon; using frameless cabinets with the rest of your kitchen design isn't going to look right. IMO, it'll say a mistake was made or we tried to save money by buying cabinets that didn't match. Sorry, I know it's a steal but at the end of the day, is it really a bargain?

Thanks for the advice. I actually like the style of doors and cabinetry, just don't know how I can get them matched with new cabinets due to the hand glazing over the off-white color. This is showier than I envisioned originally but I was intrigued by this set because of how well it matched the one wall of my layout, and it would be the "focus point" of the kitchen. The second wall would just have the tall oven cabinet (in this display) and a large window over the sink wall (3 base cabinets as well as sink and 2 dishwashers, preferably integrated), and then I will have a large island which doesn't have to match. Recessed into an adjacent alcove would be a breakfast hutch but I was planning for that to match the island anyhow. I am not tied to inset, full overlay is fine too.

Based on the advice here, I think perhaps I can use this set if I change my vision and can find matching cabinets for the base cabinets in my window wall, and perhaps paint the cabinets with a layer of cream colored paint to match the new cabinets. I emailed the Aya company to see if they could just provide matching doors.

That said, can I have honest opinion on this type of hood? Any advice on the inserts? The hood is 36 inches wide and 22 inches deep centrally; it is not rectangular.

I'm going to say "ditto" to live wire's comments since he and I so often disagree (unless we don't then it's a major arm wrestle and he's bigger than me) :oP

And then add the following:

Are you a professional painter? Do you have the spray equiptment and a paint booth to paint these in? Are you using the exact same paint, both in quality and color as the other cabinets? Do you live in a 100 year old victorian so none of the matching stuff matters?

If you answered yes to all of these questions...sure go for it. If not, this is a mistake that will cost you if you should choose to ever sell your home.

My kitchen in the new house will probably have a mix of inset, full overlay (built in 1890's) and differnt paint colors and styles. But my kitchen is a huge unfitted victorian kitchen, so that works. In anything else, diferent paint finishes, colors, inset and not inset runs (it's one thing to mix on a cabinet but not from one wall to another) well it's going to look like you purchased some of the kitchen on sale and tried to make it work...

If it's exactly what you are using, go for it, you'll save a fortune. If it's not, pass, no matter how good the deal.

Since you're not set on inset, I think they can work. Painting them and the additional ones from Aya the same will unify them. As an added bonus frameless drawers have much more space inside than inset ones do and there are bunches of drawers in that display. danielle00 put in a beautiful Crown Point kitchen last year with frameless full overlay perimeter cabs and inset island cabs so you could still do inset on the island.

I think the hood is different, but not in an obnoxious way. I can see it working out just fine. If sometime down the line you decide that you really dislike the style, you can always pull it down and put up a more typical rectangular one painted out to match with some leftover paint.
