Kitchen Finished! Last Tweaks Done (pics)

After 7 Â½ years in my 1949 starter home I couldnÂt take my one-wall kitchen any longer. It had one usable base cabinet with one silverware drawer! The 42" sink base was filled with dry rot and had two fake drawer fronts. The cabinet doors were warped and sagging on their hinges. My appliances were all on their last legs.

L-Shaped Kitchen

I figured out that I could create an L-shaped kitchen from my one-wall kitchen if I moved the doorway and cut an opening to recess the fridge into the laundry room/utility room. I canÂt tell you how many times I measured the floor and wall in the kitchen!

Refrigerator Wall

I designed the fridge wall to provide a needed home for the refrigerator, additional cabinets and a wonderful "landing" surface by the fridge. GC implemented this even better than planned by increasing the doorway width, telling me to get the base cabinets cut down to 21" and cutting the above refrigerator cabinet down to 18".

Laundry Room/Utility Room

I turned the Laundry/Utility room into a practical extension of the kitchen. Based on 2 magazine articles, I made a counter area above the front loaders for small appliances. I wanted the somewhat limited counter space in the kitchen as uncluttered as possible. Everything about this arrangement has to be moveable because of the plumbing and heating hub in this room.

Cleo- the original stovetop fit in a bigger hole than the "new" one, so that piece of stainless was jammed in there to cover the hole. Needless to say, it did not stay very well! The tile backplash and counter were original to the home, built in the early 50's, and those switches on the wall were the controls! That is not grout- that was how the tile was glazed or painted or whatever. Heheheh, so many people used to comment on the "retro" decorating, and liked to play with the switches. raehelen- yes, I got a great deal on the granite. The slabs were discounted from 20/sf to 4.99/SF because there were irregular areas in them that limited the useful squarefootage, and they'd been sitting around for a while. There was a stack of reduced slabs, and I asked to see some of the ones hidden in the back of the stack, and low and behold, there were three slabs hidden back there that were gorgeous....... Even the granite guy said something about how that stack had not been touched for a while. I had even been to that granite yard twice before, and not thought to ask to look deep in that stack. I bought 2 slabs, for $464, and there was a bit of waste, but I still have enough left to make a bathroom vanity countertop! The fabrication was $2285. I was quoted between $1800-4500 by other fabricators. Oh, and the cabinets are santos and santa maria mahogany, no stain.

This thread has helped me a great deal. I'm in the process of designing my kitchen for a new home we will be building (hopefully) soon. the hangup has been my klitchen . I've had kitchens a tad tight, but functioned well, and I've had the huge kitchen with too great a distance to everything, including carrying a kettle of boiling water across the kitchen to dump in the sink. I've been going around and around with wondering if the table should go in the center of the whole kitchen, (Julia Child style), or if I should I have a wonderful island, for baking and perhaps a small prep sink in it. The pros to table centered in kitchen is small steps to serve and clean up. The cons are I give up having full view of our woods. With the island the table can have full view of the woods at the end of the kitchen area, and I can have my wonderful baking island. The cons are it's a lot of steps to set the table in a kitchen that long. Twenty some feet seems long. I'm thinking the view and the use of the island would be well worth it. Sandy

I am so glad that I stopped back to the GW forum today and did not miss your post. I am a huge fan of all things costal inspired. There are so many elements that are just breathtakingly gorgeous in their own right, but even more so when grouped together. I love the blue on the ceiling, the marble counters, the door treatments to the laundry, the large and numerous windows, the pebbles, the whitewash siding, the lights, and the kitchen table. This is all from memory after first glance...now I have to go back and really look again. Congratulations on a creating a very calm, cohesive, beautiful space!

Martha: Thank you so much for your kind words. I like the words "verbal bouquet", I am going to use that sometime this week... and yes they do have value. I appreciate your comments, thank you. Bayarea: Yes the red cabinets! Well, he did take them back and redid the finish. (He claims he didn't know his installer had taken them from the shop that day to install... whatever.) I told him to do away with the distressing and just give me finished red cabinets. He did accomplish that. We didn't end on the best of terms. I am thrilled with the quality of the construction, and for the most part happy with the finishing. However, his ability to run his own business and communicate with other humans leaves a lot to be desired. He won't get my reccommendation to anyone. Regarding the hearth, I would be remiss if I didn't say thanks to Colleen... (colleen, I can't remember your full screen name) for sending me a photo she had for inspiration. I was also highly influenced by this photo I found here on GW. I absolutely love it and worked my own rendidtion. If someone knows who to thank, please let me know!

Wow- I'm surprised folks brought this back up from the past. Thanks for the compliments.

kitchenlady - thanks! it's such a relief to be able to enjoy my kitchen now after my rather old kitchen of before. I didn't tile myself. I used a so called professional. Problem was that he was not used to working with the thinner bisazza tiles and put plenty of errors into his install. I was disappointed but took off the "microscope goggles" and moved on.

justadncr - thanks for the compliments. The booth is fun and comfortable to use. I was like "My two friends???". Then went back and looked at the pictures.... LOL. I didn't have Minnie yet, but Bosco was such a trooper. I can't tell you how abysmal the living situation was --- very small house, I was unprepared, it was clutter and boxes everywhere. The poor baby was locked into my bedroom during the day, but he put up with it --- he was such a good boy I can't even tell you.
