...I'm in an awful mess. I went searching for a recipe yesterday and got nailed with a trojan. It's Win32/Patched.GB. Have you ever heard of it? I'm on my DH's computer as we speak. Mine will only boot to the desktop wallpaper and no icons, start, nuttin'. Yesterday I could at least manuver enough to "try" some of the fixes I was finding on Google searches. None of which seemed to be working. Then, in the middle of my attempt to repair, we had company stop by so I just turned it off for the rest of the day. This morning, my DH tried to do a restore and now we have no icons or anything. I guess my question to you is, is there hope to restore any of my files, pics, etc. or is this Sony Vaio been reduced to a boat anchor. We called our computer buddy but he's tied up until later this week. I was just hoping I could do something myself but without a start menu or icons, I'm DUH. I'm just SICK about this. I've never had a virus in 15 years. Looks like my luck just ran out. :(

Summer, I feel for you...the same thing happen to me in November...I googled Jennifer Grey....and something appeared on my computer that my computer was infected and that was the end of it. I had a trojan. I had to get my computer man in to remove it...I couldn't do anything with my computer. I read somewhere if this ever happens again and you see this statement that my computer is infected that I should shut my computer down completely...don't click anything. I never had a virus or trojan also for about fifteen years...I was so upset...It happen on my laptop...so I was lucky I have a desktop to communicate with the computer forum.

Rich Fruit Cake There's a lot of ingredients but you basically just mix them all together! Makes 8" round cake or 7" square. (I have also used this recipe to make a 9" round cake with excellent results) 1 lb 5 oz currants 6 oz raisins 11 oz sultanas/golden raisins 6 oz candied citrus peel 5 oz candied cherries, washed and cut into 4 pieces 1 oz sliced almonds 1 oz almond meal/flour 1 1/2 teaspoons very strong coffee 2 level teaspoons spice mix (your own preference but I use cocoa,cinnamon, ground ginger, allspice and nutmeg) Pinch of salt Zest and juice 1 small lemon 10 oz soft dark brown sugar or molasses (I use 1/2 of each) 10 oz butter 12 oz self rising flour 3 fl oz dark rum 6 large eggs Extra 1 fl oz dark rum for brushing over cake Line cake pan sides and base with parchment paper and outside of pan sides and base with brown paper (using natural string to secure) Heat oven to 250F In large bowl add spices, coffee, almonds, salt, lemon zest, and juice to fruit. Mix well then add rum and leave to soak for at least 24 hours or up to 1 week. I stir it once per day. The aroma is wonderful! In a second bowl, beat butter and sugar until pale and creamy. Beat eggs one at a time and add to butter mix, adding some flour with each egg. Reserve a small amount of flour to coat fruit by stirring it through fruit mixture. Gradually add butter/egg mix to fruit mix and stir until well mixed. Scrape into cake pan making a very slight depression in the center. Cover lightly with circle of parchment paper with small hole cut in center. Bake in pre-heated 250F oven just above center, until an inserted skewer comes out clean, approx 3 hours. (My 9" cakes have taken up to 5 hours!!) When cooked leave in oven for a few minutes with the door open. Remove from oven, brush over 1 fl oz of rum over top of cake. Leave in pan until totally cold, or overnight in a cool room. Remove from pan, wrap completely in parchment paper, then in foil. Store for minimum 4 weeks to mature. I brush with a little extra rum or brandy every 6 weeks if I store the cake for many months. The cake for this Christmas is over one year old.

For a while, I was really going for that stone bumpout and glass tile by the range. Now....I am back to waffling. I'm terrible. lol Quartz is kind of at or near the top of my wishlist (see how wishywashy I am still??). Until I figure out cabinet finishes, I can't really figure that out. But, I like the clean, consistent look of some of those quartzes. And, some of them have "natural" tones I really like (cement, limestone, etc). I still like the idea of earthy if I can get it. A tame counter would also allow the option of having some fun with the counter-to-ceiling tile for the range hood nook, if I dare. lol I'm also really drawn to linear counters, but I'm just not sure that works for us? I haven't totally ruled out the few corians I like (rain cloud, et at) that are linear'ish. I also see some cool quartzes that have these swirly lines through them. And...I haven't lost my love of quartzite - I'm just not sure the budget/project really fit it? I'm not feeling any granites so far... Soapstone is still on the table, too. It didn't work out with the designer of that kitchen I hired. She's not a KD yet. She passed the dimensions on to the KD, who drafted up a kitchen that was wrong in every single dimension, i.e., made my ceilings taller, made the peninsula so long it cut off the entry to the kitchen and so deep it cut off the hallway access. On top of that, the quote for their frameless cabinets (low end, Katana, called their "IKEA competition" was $19,000... I'm like, um, IKEA would cost like $3500, I'm not think this is competitive... So, they gave me a refund. I'm basically nowhere. The most I can say for myself is that: 1 - I bought a range 2 - I still love the light I picked out 2 years ago 3 - I am almost done with a layout. 4 - I found hardware I like This in something like 2 years...lol! My partner, though, is kicking it.

Kmgard, I am so sorry this happened to you. Don't give up yet. Sealing the granite with a spray on bottle of sealer recommended by my installer helped me with stains. The sealer is a barrier for the stone. That way oil, vinegar, wine, butter, lemon juice... are unable to really soak into the stone. That oil on your counter will need to slowly evaporate. Talk to your installer. Recently I posted to Jan Jan my true granite anxiety. You are not alone in your granite woes. ~boxerpups ------------------------- Hi Jan Jan, I totally know what you are going through. You have no idea I am far worse than you. I watch my granite like a newborn. Touching it, smiling at it, checking every little corner, seam and enjoying this piece of rock like it was my first born. I am not as bad today (2 months later) than I was when my granite was first installed. I was constantly cleaning it, drying water droplets, checking it over and over to be sure some fool did not spill wine, water, soda, oil, vinegar.... I told everyone in the house they had to use the kitchen table to eat their salads with olive oil. Vinegar was contraband. I started drinking only Pinot Grigio. No red. I became insane. There was always a clean towel in my hand ready for the spill. My eyes darting about in fierce protective mode. My girls had a gang of even more teen girls over here. They decided to bake brownies. I was so stressed watching them spray Pam all over pans, spilling oil, eggs, flour, chocolate... Laughing and not taking the counter care seriously. I caught one rolling her eyes at my daughter. Saying. "My mom was pyscho when we got new counters too." I realized I had to just walk away and come clean when they were all out of the kitchen. My DH and Kids tease me endlessly that I love the counters more than them. My granite is dark, sealed and one of the strong less pourous ones. ( I am told not sure) And yes I obsess over it. I am a little better now than I used to be. I started drinking red wine, and even spilled a little. Calmly cleaned it. I have let water dry up on it's own without being rubbed down with a soft cloth. I calmly told one of the subcontractors to please climb off my counters when he climbed up on them. I wanted to say "You DUMB A , what are you doing? Can you afford to replace these? Do you know how long it took me to find the right slabs? Get your boots off my counters NOW!!!" ............. I did not scream.......Every day I am a little better. I keep telling myself it is just a rock. That there are many who eat off of stained rocks and that it will all be okay. I will be okay. A few deep breaths and a glass of RED wine and I am okay. Sorry -- I think I fell off the end of the earth -- no that was just the first week of school, meetings almost every night since then, football and band going full tilt and I thought I could function with little or no sleep. My son had a big roller coaster experience with his college and life plans over the weekend and the first of this week. I'm still not certain where that will wind up, but the crisis moment has passed. OMG -- I'm not sure I'm ready for this senior year. I'll be okay when he leaves for college, but deciding where he will go and all that goes with that is not going to be easy for this one. I was supposed to be somewhere else hours ago, so I will quickly tell you what I was playing with and see if it sparks any interest rather than spending more time trying to get back to drawing it up and then finding it's impossible or whatever. I'm really getting caught up on the living spaces and flow of the home more than the knit-picking of the kitchen itself. The main thing that is bothering me there is the pantry being so far away from the cooking and prep areas. If you have enough cabinets to put your spices and most used staples in them near your baking and cooking zones and use the pantry for extra storage, small appliances and extra bakeware -- the things you don't need daily or won't have to go grab as you adjust or improvise when cooking, it might work. Or if you cook in an orderly fashion -- all by recipes or can gather everything once and not need to run to the pantry to get something you forgot or decide you need to adjust or improve something, it may work for you. I had a kitchen with a pantry across an aisle -- not as far as this one would be, and it drove me crazy -- to the point of hating to cook. I had very few cabinets in the kitchen itself and no room for any food other than the fridge. Even my spices were in the pantry. The walk-in pantry was one of the reasons I loved the house when I first saw it and one of the reasons I hated it by the time I left. -- but it was the whole package and you have more to work with. Just make sure you know where things will go and how it will work for you. I was thinking that instead of moving the laundry you simply move the door and reorient it, but if that has moved already, it's a moot point. I was kind of hoping that would save some expense so you wouldn't hate me if I suggested taking the kitchen to the right instead of to the back so that you could create a large great room rather than having things divided. It doesn't sound like you live divided and need the two living areas and two dining areas. I will forget that for now -- looks like it might be too much and too late. However, I would not wall off the area in front of the master. I was thinking of moving the desk that faces the kitchen and putting it over between the coat closet and the master BR door, then make that open area (overgrown hallway) a reading or game area with comfy reading chairs and/or a game table for playing cards, board games, crafts, extra dining for get togethers, etc. That's an area that will work with your family room but still give you an added function. I think I would still do that and even if you go with the kitchen pretty much as planned, the area that was patio could be a crafting/activity room that is more segregated and can be closed off from the much used door. I think that closing off that space and having traffic right through the middle of it would make it a mess in terms of too much hall and too little room to work with. If you make that area a game/study area, you could make that wall separating that area from the kitchen a peninsula - go all talls on the back wall and then have a pass through so that you can do snacks, coffee/beverages and even buffets there. If you have island seating, you then have three eating areas for when the family and grandkids are all there -- possibly even room to set up another folding table - and everyone can see each other. The thing that really stuck with me was that this house didn't flow and you wondered where the space was. I am afraid that if you wall it up and box things up like you have them, you might not improve that at all -- maybe make it worse. As I said at the start -- I have been out of the loop on all that has preceded it, so if I'm off on the wrong track I'm sorry.

Apparently this one is really ugly. Or, when looking at the fixes yesterday it appeared to be. I just did a search on the computer help forum (where I actually meant to post this thread:)) to see if anyone else had gotten hammered with this Win32Patched and didn't come up with anything.

I wish I had shut it down immediately but my DH has fixed a couple of virus on his computer before so we did some searches and looked for some repair tips and kept trying them but nothing was working. Now it's just trashed. :( We broke down and called a fellow this morning that our neighbor uses. He's coming out around 3 today.

Wish someone could tell me what kind of a kick or thrill these sorry @*%&$# get from doing this to someone's computer. I'd like to meet them face to face. It wouldn't be pretty. Grrr!

Did you post on the computer forum--with an explaination. Besides raven there are some experts there. You may have to dumb everything. What virus protection are you running? Hopefully it is not Norton.

No Marie, it's AVG. May have to get something better after this though. ugh! My DH's computer leaves much to be desired. Took me forever to get my thread posted here. I'll c & p my original post and take it over to the computer help forum if I can get this relic to let me.

but that is a bad one so what you will need to do is head over to another forum I am on that can help you run some very special scans that can be used to remove all aspects of the infection.
go here to this forum, you will need to register, then post at the area I am linking to and tell exactly what you told me here. The team there will be with you as soon as possible.

please do not try to follow any one elses thread that may sound similar we have to do scans for each case individually. I will be there watching for you.

The question that hasn't been answered and is the most important one is, how do you know you got hit
1) by a trojan; and
2) by this particular one?

AVG is perfectly fine. I've used it and still do on some machines, but remember it's an antivirus program and you say you got hit by a trojan. Granted, it probably will still detect it, but trojans are *not* viruses.

From your symptoms, albeit very vague, you could simply have some corrupted files or you could have something serious, or both. You have some diagnosis to do before giving treatment. Not unlike treating for ulcers when you have diabetes.

No it is definitely infection several others have now reported being infected by going to the foodnetwork site, we are hopeful that they will be able to clean up their site soon but till then I would not be going there.

Summer is being helped at a wonderful support help forum now.
should anyone else get hit please come to the computer help forum and let us know please.

Luckily a friend's computer repair guy was in the neighborhood and stopped by after hearing we were having trouble. He just threw my hard drive over his shoulder and took off with it. Said he'd have it back to me Thursday and not to worry, he's dealt with this varmint before. He said it's not a virus, it's a spyware. We thought we saw, during a search yesterday, that they were calling it a Trojan/virus, maybe we were mistaken. But, nonetheless, my Sony has gone to the computer hospital and hopefully Matt will be able to clean it up for me.

I so appreciate the responses and will alert the forum folks that they can help another poor soul that has run into computer troubles and that DH and I caved in and allowed a fixit man to take over our problem this time. Thank you all so much!

Wow what timing. I went to foodnetwork looking for a recipe yesterday morning and got a trojan. "Palladium" was all that I could get to come up on my screen. It was my home computer and I'll admit, I know nothing about these things. I called HP support, was on the phone from 11:30 am off and on until 9:00 pm last night. Turned out we had tons of files infected and it was a mess. They performed a pc tune up. Took forever. We have trend micro and they kept saying that was partly to blame. Suggested Norton. Does everyone agree?

I would suggest Avast but what do I know since my ASUS PC now appears to be bricked due to this virus.

I started full scans of my spyware/malware programs last night to try to identify and clean out this virus, which I also got in the course of a recipe search, apparently from the Food Network.

Unfortunately my son got up this morning, saw my netbook sitting there with the clamshell up, thought I'd left it on by accident, and shut it down.

Now it won't boot, not even in safe mode. I know the winlogon.exe file was corrupted and had scheduled a boot scan in Avast, but what it does now is cycle constantly between the blue screen with a message that flashes past far too quickly for me to read it, and the windows boot screen. It never comes up.

Since it was shut down before I got up this morning, I also didn't get to write down my XP license number, so even though I have access to an external DVD and an XP installation disk, I DON'T have a valid license # to enter.

I fear my netbook is bricked, all because of a recipe for apple streusel pie.
