Felting Advice Please

I want to knit, and then felt, a brimmed hat (see http://webhome.idirect.com/~quanah/patfelthat.html).

I'm in Australia where wool is labelled a little differently from that in the US. I've bought Panda's Woolbale which is suitable for felting - it is labelled as 8 Ply and will give 22 stitches x 30 rows over a 10cm x 10cm square with size 6 needles (US). That's a square a little under 4 inches.

The pattern uses 2 strands of Patons Classic (not available here in Australia) which is described as a "worsted weight" and I have no idea what that means. But I think it might be a little thinner than my 8 ply.

Will it make much difference using a thicker wool. I presume it will shrink down to the correct size anyway, but will the hat end up too hard, and would that matter much.

I've never felted anything before so I'm really jumping in at the deep end.

The official blurb/specifications on Woolbale can be found at www.pandayarns.biz

Any advice gratefully accepted and appreciated.
