First of all, a murder (almost). I personally think this woman is risking disaster by sitting around the house in an evening gown. Note the title of her book. It must have been really engrossing, because she doesn't notice this guy four feet away from her.

He abandons his knife (gee, and it was so big, too!) and goes for the neck.

But wait! At some point before complete strangulation, they decide they like each other! She still looks pretty serious, though--possibly because he's back to wielding the knife.

Thanks for sharing these photos. Your parents must have been wonderful people with a great sense of humor. Your Mom's tennis outfit is great. Do you have any idea who the characters are in the first photos?

This is indeed a rare, wall-hung dental cuspidor. They were first popular in the late 1919s when it was considered unsanitary to brush one's teeth where one washed the hands. They were first added by the wealthy. They gained popularity in the next twenty years and then as quickly were gone. Here are pics of two such dental cuspidors from a Victorian mansion that my sister is considering rehabbing. Simply gorgeous. These were not originally intended to hold water and most did not have facets, but rather spouts, and most did not have stoppers to allow water to be held.

I've been scanning my dad's negatives......(5 pics)

No, flatbed scanners can't be counted on to accommodate negatives. You need to find one that has settings and physical properties that will allow negative scanning. Scanning negatives requires backlighting. I was recently on the phone with a Canon techie, and he mentioned that my scanner was so great because it takes negatives of different sizes, and it was the only one Canon made that would do that. Unfortunately, it's not being manufactured now. I took a look on Amazon and found this one, which will scan slides, negatives and medium-format panoramic film up to 6 x 22 cm. I usually have the negative holder on my scanner set to an opening of 2x3". If I want to scan a 2x2" negative, I just set it in the opening, leaving blank space around it. The preview will come up as a black rectangle, but if I draw a crop box inside the rectangle, my image will show up. I can then adjust the crop to include what I want before I click Scan. Perhaps the DPReview people can recommend other scanners. I'm also wondering if you could use a light box to "scan" the negatives with your camera. Scanning is basically the same as taking a picture. I've handled some slides this way. Because these slides were damaged (mounted under glass and now stuck to the glass--and even worse in some cases), and because I'm not using a tripod, the results aren't wonderful. But I think I could do a lot better if I put some thought into this and started out with better slides.

I love the kitchen! Once you cook in it for a while, you will figure out what you really want to change. You may find you just love being in such a charming place. I wanted to keep my vintage kitchen, but desperately needed counter space. I spent a lot of time figuring how to have both. Give yourself some time to decide your priorities for your kitchen. Here's the only original kitchen cabinet to this house that is usable. The rest were put in the workshop when the "new" kitchen was done in 1971. Unfortunately, they are too far gone to rescue and re-use in my kitchen remodel. Dang it anyway. I'm using it for my beverage/snack station. I should take pictures of the inside. There are three shelves but they are all pull-outs. You can also see the handle for the huge breadboard that pulls out above the drawer. The floor is the original linoleum floor from 1949 with the red inset a few inches from the edge. The counter-top for this cabinet is the same linoleum that is on the floor. The same linoleum is in the kitchen. To the right are floor-to-ceiling original built-in pantry cabinets. After the laundry is remodeled a bit, the ugly under-cabinet height mini-fridge will be moving under a new cabinet on another wall and replaced with a stainless one (or painted with stainless paint). The microwave will move to a shelf elsewhere. I'll probably fine an open shelf or cart for potatoes and such for that space. The antique cabinet to the far left holds some recycling containers and additional pantry storage. That's probably also staying.

I don't know the names of the murderer and the murderee, but I know they were married. They appear in quite a few photos taken before I was born, when my parents lived in the Village. I don't think they show up, or at least not often, in pictures taken after my parents moved to Queens, so they were probably neighbors in the Village.

Yes, both my parents had a great sense of humor. They had a good time with their many friends, including shared vacations, etc. As I've mentioned here before, my mom was only 38 when she died. A lot of people were stunned.

I'd love to know what happened to my cousin Beth, Buddy's beautiful daughter with his first wife. She was a few years older than I. I haven't seen her since childhood. Incidentally, I think his first wife was the "drunken" woman seen in the picture with the piano player, if anyone remembers that one.

Oh my gosh. Those murder photos are hilarious! I can't imagine sitting on the lap of someone who had just tried to strangle me! ROFL And that woman isn't very observant! Either that or she had some kind of bodice-ripper book hidden under that other one and was completely distracted!

Your family picture is so cute. They look like they're having a great time! Thanks so much for sharing!
