My SIL had it done. Her results were fabulous -- Two weeks later you'd never have known she had anything done.

I had basal cell on the bridge/side of my nose and had MOHs surgery. You would never know and it was a BIG hole.

Lindsey, my little sister has had 3 (or more-she stopped telling us about all of them) basal cell carcinomas removed, and she's not even 30 yet. 2 were on her face and 1 on her shoulder. Her dermatologist took our family history very seriously- our paternal grandfather died of melanoma. I had a mole on my back since I was at latest 7 years old, and several years ago I wanted it removed because it was rubbing on my new low-rise jeans. The dermatologist, first visit, zapped the thing off. Of course it was just a mole; if I had cancer for 20 years (that's at least as long as I had the mole) I'd probably be in serious trouble. Anyway, I don't care how fantastic the derm is supposed to be, if s/he doesn't listen to you, the patient, s/he's a crappy doctor. Nobody knows what is normal for you better than you. If the derm can't get that, s/he's not worth seeing. Keep looking for a trusting derm. And try not to worry. I know it's hard, my sister was 23 when she was first diagnosed, and didn't take it so well at first. But then she started to joke around saying stuff like "Don't annoy me, I have cancer" and such in a joking manner, although obviously she did have cancer. But being lighthearted about it, talking to people honestly, and being diligent about keeping her derm appointments and looking for skin changes has helped. It's not something that will ever go away- she will always have to be on the lookout for new growths. But it is mananged. PS- her derm said that he is treating tons of people her age with skin cancer, especially on the left side of the face, shoulder, and arm. Chalks it up to long commutes (trucker's tan) and lack of ozone layer. And BTW, she lives in Chicago, not exactly the most tropical or direct sun exposure in the world.

Laura, I believe for you you're MOHs experience did cause PTSD. For me, my MOHs experiences have contributed to piece of mind and a good night's sleep. 30 years ago I had a BCC on my face removed in the doctor's office; cut and scraped, without any margin tissue sent off for biopsy to determine if there were clear edges. It left a medium sized hole in my face that always prompted the question "What happened?" when meeting someone for the first time afterwards. A year later I noticed a spot on the tip of my nose. Not wanting to risk the same disfigurement on my nose I contacted a plastic surgeon that had removed a BCC near the eye/tear duct a few years before. In planning the procedure he mentioned that the surgery was simple and was there anything else I wanted taken care of. I asked him to fix the scar from the other BCC. Day comes, I have the removal and reconstructive surgeries and everything looks great. Then, a week later, I get a call at home. It's my PS. He says a biopsy of the scar he'd fixed from the BCC removal the year before came back and there was cancer everywhere on the edges. A week later I go back in to have it taken care of. The cancer was deep. He said he almost had to cut entirely through my skin layers to remove it. My lip was pulled up into a prominent Elvis type sneer. I've had three additional surgeries to correct the disfigurement. The dermatologist from the other BCC called later to see how things are going. I thought at the time that he was wanting to touch base to see if I was going to initiate a lawsuit against him. (I didn't.) To shorten a long story, all cancers I've had since are removed through MOHs. I see a dermatologist every three months. Tidbit - 15 years ago I participated in one of the clinical trials for Aldara. I was in the group that got the Aldara. I knew because my forehead looked like I'd taken a bad fall on concrete while skateboarding.

Quilly... the first time DH was referred immediately to the Plastic Surgeon by our Family Doctor. I wondered at that time why not an Oncologist. The Oncologist he DID see was for another matter, he was in there for follow up for a blood issue, and asked about the skin cancer,that Oncologist really didn't say much.. just said to go back to the Plastic Surgeon. So your answer: " Even when DH diagnoses skin cancer he refers them to a dermatologist or plastic surgeon because oncologists don't routinely perform those procedures." ..now i understand. SunnyDJ thanks for telling me about your DH's experience with MOHS. WmbsgJane...thanks for the kind thoughts. Everyone has been so helpful, I feel so much better today. It is very encouraging to have the KT members to talk to. You all have a lovely day. I have been mowing and doing yard work. We had a cold front here in Central VA. Instead of the 98 degree days we have been having, today is a cool 84!!

Thanks so much for letting me collect my thoughts and frame my course of action. Wanting a MOHS specialist (and not someone who does it in between botox, etc) I found a very well trained physician who is within driving distance at a ranked facility. All done, high level of confidence in the process and outcome. So thank you all! running, I find your comments more matter-of-fact (which I appreciate) than cavalier. I reached out to a friend who is a notable pathologist, and he basically concurred with you and some of the others here. Thanks to all of you for helping me to have good questions. Something I learned from him years ago (overkill for squamous and I didn't do in this instance, but I thought I'd throw it in as a PSA for more serious scenarios) is to have biopsy slides sent to 3 different labs. At his counsel, I did that a few years ago. The first (local hospital) report was terrifying, I spoke with him and we sent the slides to 2 highly regarded pathology labs. Those reports mirrored each other, and the treatment recommendations were a million times better than the original report indicated. The takeaway from my MOHS research is that it's not difficult to tell on the slide if the margins are clear. The precision comes into play when extrapolating the cells on the slide to in situ. To oversimplify, if the slide shows more cells need to be removed at 6 o'clock, they better know where 6 o'clock is on the site... roarah, so sorry about your dad :( Lars, I'm so glad you caught it early, and have someone with his credential close by. jrb and Lars—stay diligent! My DD also had it and you would never know and it was a BIG place. Hers was a very rare type and she has had no problems since . It was quite painful after the numbness wore off though so be prepared for that. Good Luck, c

I had a squamous cell cancer removed from the bridge of my nose 3 years ago. I saw what it looked like before closure and it was the size of a nickel, but didn't need any graft. It was sutured closed and healed fairly quickly. Be very careful before exposing the healed area to the sun for at least a year, even for a few minutes.

Once it healed I used zinc sunscreen every day. Of course I still use sunscreen, but it has healed so well that all you can see is a thin line if you're looking close enough.

Take along something to read and eat and the time will go fairly quickly.

I had MOHs for basal cell on my nose, and like you, I was prepared for a skin graft. Fortunately, I didn't need one. I had a cosmetic surgeon close the opening from the procedure, and it all healed really well. Best wishes for a smooth procedure and quick recovery. Keep us posted!

So glad you didn't need a skin graft! I also had eye pain, probably from the numbing shots. It gets better fast, so hang in there! Also, FYI, if your nose seems a little crooked, don't panic like I did! Initially the skin is tight with the stitches and swelling, but it loosens and stretches in a short time. Everything will be fine.
