Resizing jacket pattern

I'm about 2/3 of the way done with the Bernet's country wool jacket. It's just been practice. I really loved the looks of the pattern but when I tried the gauge on 10.5 size needles it called for it seemed too bulky looking so I tried the 9 needles. I've been knitting the XL size and it appears that it will end up measuring a size medium. How would I increase stitches to make a size L approx? I plan on calculating percentages on the gauge I have versus the patterns but how do I handle the neck that you count stitches for? My other option, I think, is to use the 10 size needles and again knit the XL, but I think I may not be too happy with the look of the knit. This is the first large project I may actually finish. Most of my efforts have ended up incomplete due to the fact that my recipients have outgrown my projects. I have more time on my hands these days.
