Hi everyone,

I'm a long-time crocheter (since 9th grade and I'll be 20 next month), and I've done a lot of projects and gifts for friends and family. All those negative comments from rude and jealous people in high school have paid off into postive self-esteem boosters! However, the next project I would like to do is for myself.

One of my favorite musicals is The Little Mermaid and, I hate to say it, but I love Ursula in this version! So I'm planning to make an Ursula doll. I saw a mermaid pattern on CPC and would use it for the top half and use an octupus pattern for the tentacles. I may need to use fiberfill or pipe cleaners for posability. Sorry I don't have a camera but if I get one, I'll post pictures!

DO you belong to Ravelry? There are guys there that knit and crochet..you're not that unique!

The most successful projects I have done with groups: Decoupage picture frames (I kept my eyes out for inexpensive frames with wide flat edges, and prepicked from my paper stash including paper letters form scrapbooking supplies so people could make words. I used modpodge, but you can water down Elmers. I took everyone's home and put several coats of polyurethane over several days, but people could spray uerethane their own once the glue was totally dry. another possibility is to use mirrors or boxes etc. Message boards with criss crossed ribbon. I used homesote as the base. A 4' x 8' sheet is pretty cheap and it can be cut up into many pieces. The quilt batting and fabric and ribbon. Staple gun and decorative tacks. People loved these so much we did it twice. I'm looking forward to hearing what others have done. Kathy

Have you checked out Wallwords and other sites that have similar things? Don't trust the first free translation web site that you go to. Here are some examples of the differences. I bought a folding table, im going to prime a section of our basement and put up shelves to store my jars of glass, tools and glue. For the first time i will have a place, the time and some materials! I want to make a memorial for my garden for my kitty that i lost this month, im thinking of doing a pile of little river stones mosaiced with hearts outlined in ball chain. I saw some on chris emmert's flickr photo stream, and thought that format would be something that I and my daughter could work on together. Very sweet and charming. I am also gathering my nerve to do an 16 by 20 gog mosaic from a photograph of my daughter standing in a field of yellow flowers by a lake. Ive done lots of small, not very ambitious projects and i think i just havent challenged myself to try to do something at a higher level. Im just a nipper (leponitt) though, i dont have a beetle bits system, or a glass saw, so im wondering if that really limits the grace of the image i can produce, since i think it will be really hard to get tidy grout lines. Ive been reading this forum off and on for a few years, but always just looking. Looking forward to seeing what other plans are, and i cant tell you how much the step by step photos with questions answers and commentary have really interested and helped me!! Thank you!

What kind of hinges do I need for this project idea that I have ?

Thank you so much for these ideas and the technical terms ! I wasn't even sure what to google other than 'hinge' which returns a bazillion results, lol. Yes, inboard of the pivot point is the problem I was trying to explain. If I have to overlay the excess not centered to the opening, I will. But that takes my mirror further to the left than I wanted to be (hinge will be on the right). Ideally, the excess would be to the right, on the same side as the hinge, with just a little overlay on the left. When I googled 'overlay partial wrap hinge', I also found these hinges. I think the plate would have to be mounted on the face of the sheetrock, with longer screws that would go thru the sheetrock and screw into the studs, but would these work ??? The reason I ask, is because I am not sure what material the frame of the mirror is made from and also if it is deep enough to allow me to drill the cup. Lateral hinges I think would not work, for the same reason as the drawer glides mounted sideways - I don't *think* there would be enough room. We're down at the beach house right now (our last guest broke the side rail on one of the bunk beds and we're here fixing it, no idea what they were doing to break the rail lengthwise all the way from end to end!! kids jumping on the bed I would guess), but I can measure for that idea when we get home tomorrow.

My only concern with this project is how to make her hair, gloves and the spikes on the tentacles? Any ideas?

I've decided to make the dress, head and arms first. Then, for the tentacles I'll use pipe cleaners and crochet around them. Then I'll sew them to the dress. If that doesn't work I'll crochet spirals for them. Gotta have a backup plan.

I found a picture of Ursula in the Broadway version, to get a good idea for the hair.

Sorry, Brad, I have no idea on how to do her hair or spikes on her tentacles. For her gloves, maybe you can just use that color yarn on that part of her arms. Also, if you find that pipe cleaners don't work, try working around size 16 craft wire. Or threading the same wire thru the tentacles after you have crocheted them.

That's OK, Tami. I'll look for the craft wire next time I go to Wal-Mart. Thanks for the idea for the gloves. For the dress, I'll make a solid piece first then crochet a black netting like piece to go over it for the effect.
Maybe I can do her hair like the tentacles? Just crochet over pre-cut and shaped pieces of the wire.

Is there a multicolor yarn that's purple, blue and green?
I thought I saw Red Heart make a color like it? Anybody know? Here's the colors I'm planning on using for my project.

Hair: White or cream
Body (head, arms and torso): White or cream
Dress: Light green covered over with black
Gloves and tentacles: Multicolor mentioned above

Brad, try visiting the different yarn company's web sites. They usually have color charts of the differnt yarns they have. That can give you an idea of what you want to use.

As to the hair and tentacles, just crochet over the wire and then shape it. That should be easier than trying to crochet around odd curved or bent shapes.

I look forward to seeing your progress once you start. Can you post pictures as you go?

I found two colors that Red Heart makes that I'm interested in. They are the RH Kids Beach Ombre and RH Classic Gemstone Multicolor. My first choice is the Beach Ombre if I find it.

glad to see you post. When I was in the laundramat lst week a gal asked me if what I was doong was hard to do. crocheting.
I said no and took my hook and some yarn I had with me and showed her how to do a chain stitch. She was having lot of trouble so the guy she was with took over and following my directions showed her how to do it. I let them keep the chain that they made for future reference. I would have given them the hook but it was one of those expensive lighteed ones. I sure hope they went out and bought some yarn and a hook and carried on.

Sorry, guys. The gardening bug's been distracting me so I haven't got around to Ursula yet. I saw some interesting colors at Wal-Mart and I just went into Michaels for the first time last Tuesday and I may get some yarn there on my next trip. I'm planning to make my first quilt as well, so Ursula will have to wait for now. I will keep everyone posted! Thank you for your concerns!

Thanks for the update. Yard clean-up is about all the gardening that will get done around here for a while! That won't be distracting me at all. Congratulations on starting your first quilt, also. Let us know how that goes, also.
