Hey there all y'all!! Old friends and new members/posters. Life has been a challenge as of late so I've been MIA....I'll fill ya in on conversations tomorrow. Spent a great weekend with Allye the weekend before last and wanted to share it with all y'all. Can't believe she is already two and a half years old. Yikes !!!

She wanted Red Soup, Cheese Sandwich, Milk and a Big Chocolate Cookie for dinner. How could I say no???

Mmmm, it's good Uncle David.

She wasn't all that interested in baking cookies but I still made them while she played on her computer, chased the dogs around, and counted fish in the aquarium....not to forget Dora The Explorer.

Great Grandma's Blackeyed Susans.....she always used Brach's Milk Chocolate Stars back in the 60's and 70's, I got lucky and found some Dark Chocolate Stars last December. The famous Kisses have been our replacement for the most part now.

My sister and several of her friends organized a fundraiser for a friend that was killed in a freak accident a couple of months ago. I and several others helped supply the meat, the ladies took care of sides and dessert. Ribs, sausage, pork butt, and a hunk of bologna out of the smoker.

It was a great weekend with my little pal, her older sister joined us after a sleepover with a friend but didn't want a picture taken cuz here hair looked like carp.....LOL! Remember that one from Weed? She sure is growing up and turning into a young lady now.

Hope everyone is doing okay and I still love this place even though I've not been around much lately. Great people, recipes, and fun site/forum for sure!!!!

I can't believe she is 2 1/2 !!! Where does the time go? She is adorable and I'm not at all surprised that Uncle David spoils her rotten!

Newer version of Annie's Salsa - BWB only Annie's Salsa 8 cups tomatoes, peeled, chopped and drained 2 1/2 cups chopped onion 1 1/2 cups chopped green pepper 3 to 5 chopped jalapenos (for milder leave out seeds and ribs) 6 cloves minced garlic 2 tsp cumin (optional) 2 tsp pepper 1/8 cup canning salt 1/4 c fresh cilantro (optional) 1/3 c sugar (optional) 1 cup cider vinegar (see note on subbing lemon or lime juice option) 16 oz canned tomato sauce (to adjust density) 8-16 oz canned tomato paste (to adjust density) Mix all ingredients, bring to a boil, boil 10 minutes. Pour into hot jars, process pints for 15 minutes in BWB. Makes 6 pints. _________ A lot of changes have been made to this recipe over the years. Some people like lemon or lime juice in place of some or all of the vinegar, that's fine. (Note from Sheila - I like half lemon half lime.) Some people leave out the cilantro, that's fine too. Do not increase! Some people add more hot peppers or fewer onions, fine as long as you keep the same total measurements. (Note this is what NCHFP does in their new Choice Salsa recipe.) Some people leave out the sugar, that's fine. You can scoop out the goo in the middle of the tomatoes with your thumbs when I'm peeling and chopping for a less seedy version, so it's 8 cups of chopped tomatoes without the seeds and goo. Most who make it regularly as well as Annie recommend using a variety of different slicing tomatoes, not paste types, for best flavor and consistency. (Note: use the tomato sauce and paste to adjust the consistency of the final product to a "sloshy" consistency.) According to Annie "My salsa is not as thick as Heinz catsup but it's thicker than taco sauce. If you don't like it quite as thick or sweet, cut down the amount of paste. I would add some, then taste. Reducing that ingredient shouldn't affect the safety of the recipe. I use equal amounts of sauce and paste. You can pull it off the heat at any point and adjust for flavor. Before I cook it I check for salt, sugar, check the consistency. Add more pepper or cumin if I want. When I first started making this salsa, tomato sauce and paste came in 8 and 16 ounce cans. Like everything else, they've now been downsized, so now I have to use partial cans." Ack, Arlene, that's too bad. I like a lot of different kinds of foods, and I keep trying the ones I don't like. That 7 year rule, you know. I'm picky, but I'm adventurous, if that makes sense. I'll try nearly anything once, but don't care for extremely strong flavors. Nothing really incendiary hot, mouth puckeringly sour, extremely bitter. I'm a middle of the road adventurer, LOL. Whole Foods has artisnal kimchi? Wow. I can even get commercial kimchi here in my small grocery, canned in jars with pink lids. It tastes more like sauerkraut than anything, though, and Elery doesn't like it very well. If we found a very good commercial kimchi we might just buy that. No, scratch that. We wouldn't. You know me, I gotta MAKE IT MYSELF! (grin) Plus Elery shares with his son and his daughter has a friend that makes kimchi soup, so now she wants some too. We're definitely going to try a bunch of recipes, maybe Elery can get a batch mild enough for me. Annie

You don't have room to store all that stuff....cut veggies and fruits etc. Can you possibly order out the mac and cheese? You're going to make yourself crazy! Plan out your plan of attack....when you will make what and where you will store it. Then who will buy what and where you will store that....and how you will thaw and re-heat what needs to be reheated. Realize that it will take a LOOONG time to thaw a gallon of pulled pork or shredded turkey....and to be safe it should be defrosted in the refrigerator...or a picnic cooler and the temperature carefully monitored so it stays cool until it's ready to be heated. You don't want to give people food poisioning. Hard liquor won't melt any kind of plastic....it's not a solvent for anything like that. And take advantage of all the neighbor's refrigerator and oven space that you can....and don't over look the grill to heat things...or keep them warm....and use all the picnic coolers you can find. Yes...have a few stories...like the time I invited 2 people who used to be married, with their present spouses....figured out it was fine....but one man's new wife had a fit and spent 3 hours cowering by the front door lest she run into her husband's ex wife! And there was the sweet young thing who went upstairs and went to bed in my teenaged daughter's bed....and when daughter came home, we had to wake her so my daughter could go to bed, and the time that our pastor and his wife who invited to our new years Eve party, came after another party at 4 AM....because there were lights on and they knew we were up. And the time the dog drank the drippings from the keg and got so drunk she almost couldn't get up the steps into the house, or the time I bought cheap plastic watering cans to fill with flowers for table decorations....and a couple of them leaked...luckily that was an outside party....and the wedding shower where the groom had to be helped out the door. And the time I decided I could make pizza for 45 kids and had crusts and pepperoni and a vat of sauce....and grated 10 pounds of cheese by hand!!..Took me 3 days to clean the oven after that!

All very true, plllog, and I acknowledge the problem with stuffing myself: it's a habit I need to unlearn. I do some of the eating a bit between meals, and find it a good practice. I think my diet is more balanced than you think. My bread of this morning is made with milk and oil and whole wheat (made that way on purpose! for the nutrition!), and the coffee is lengthened with half milk, half water. Some sugar, some fat, some fiber, some protein. It works: I walked five miles to town this morning, moving quickly and easily over hilly country, and arrived not in the least tired. Right now it's six hours since I finished breakfast and I'm only just starting to get hungry. I've eaten this kind of breakfast for years and find it quite substantial and satisfying. I've been an ovo-lacto vegetarian for about twenty-five years and have overall enjoyed good health and good energy while keeping a healthy weight. I was also never anemic, which many women in their fertile years complain of. I want to talk more about exercise. I walk, just because I like it and have the time, and it's more than exercise, since I love to see the country this way: I live in a beautiful part of the world. Not everybody has the time for or enjoys walking. A different kind of exercise may be more intensive and burn more calories; may have a larger aerobic component (though my heart was pumping this morning after a mile of steady uphill) or build more muscle. All that's good. But I think that even people who exercise rarely get a lot of exercise. That guy on the pioneer show did: he worked dawn to dusk, physical labor, but few people do that. If you want to eat heartily, and I do, you need to exercise a lot more than the minimum. A place where you'll see average citizens of the western world who are thin and fit is Venice. They can't drive cars--no roads--they can't even ride motor scooters or bicycles on account of the bridges, which are steep little humps with steps. They have to walk everywhere, and they're the fittest people you ever saw. And they speed along: I was out during rush hour, and though I'm a good walker they left me in the dust. It was remarkable. Motion is part of their lives, not something they do for their health. And that's the easiest way to stay thin and be able to enjoy your food--if you can manage it; not everybody can--make physical activity part of your commute, part of your chores, part of your hobby, or part of your job. The last two jobs I had, I commuted on foot and then by bike part of the time. I did make an effort to find places to live that allowed me to walk to work, and succeeded. When I got a new job further away I worked out a bike route, and then biked part of the time. Sometimes, if you think about it and make it a priority, you can do these things. I got much of my exercise in those days going to and from work, and have happy memories of the experience.

It appears Allye and I have a lot in common. We're both gorgeous :) we like the same foods, and we love playing on the computer!

And if history repeats itself, I'm getting an uncle David, with all the bells and whistles.

Gosh, I haven't seen chocolate stars in ages! Dark chocolate?...now you're talkin'!!

Red soup & grilled cheese sammies is one of my favorite meals. I like to float popcorn on the soup. The popcorn melts fast so ya have to eat it first.

The smoked meat looks wonderful but Allye makes everything else pale in comparison, even the dark chocolate, what a beautiful little girl she is.

I'm sorry about your sister's friend, my condolences on that.

Thanks all y'all! Does this site still have some kinks in it? I know for sure I responded last night.....strange. It could have been me too. Just bought a new laptop and haven't had much time to play with it and add ad blocker yet. Several post I've opened the text run into the ads on the right. What a pia.

Maggie,I had never heard of smoked bologna until we moved south. Thinking it's a Oklahoma/Texas thing as most bbq joints serve it down here.

Thanks Annie! Between the dinner/buffet, his favorite band playing for free and donations they raised a good sum of money for his wife and kids.

Ci lantro, those Brach's Stars have been hard to find forever it seems. I was glad to find the dark ones but I guess they are becoming a thing of the past. Popcorn in the soup, oh yeah, I/we have done that more than once.

Allye is a hoot and she will talk your ear off for sure. Thankfully she is potty trained now too. Not a fan of changing "muddy diapers" here...although I've done it many times over the years even though I don't have kids. LOL!
