Fly, I couldn't/didn't want to watch the video, but I've worked with many car accident victims who had spinal cord injuries, brain injuries, amputations, all from a careless act...sometimes from someone else doing something stupid. I also taught driver's ed for the disabled, and learned how taking your eyes off the road even for a millisecond can cause you not to notice something in your path. Just a few weeks ago, my 20-something co-workers all admitted to texting while driving and said that they text and never "miss anything". I felt like a squawky old mother lecturing them. I hope that PSA comes to the US.

In California, it's illegal to talk on a cell phone or text while driving but I see it all the time. I couldn't watch it through but tell me ... did they all live?

I did watch it. Curiosity got the best of me. That video wasn't real right? (Yes I know the results could be that and worse) They couldn't of filmed the girls in the car before the accident right...? Although I'm amazed at how real the video looked! Geez.

I'll never understand texting while driving. I'm honestly not a fan of texting in general.

What is most disturbing is reading the comments from the idiots on youtube. Some of the people say they can text without looking at the screen and justify their actions!

I hope, really hope, that this gets the message across. What I think would be MOST effective is to show actual accident scenes. Gruesome as they are, kids tend to be so jaded by FX, no matter how realistic it looks. The REAL thing might change their minds, however.

We drove past a fatality one day. There was a body lying on the street under a yellow covering. My teens were in the car at the time and they grew strangely silent as I explained to them that it was a person, who is now dead, due to a car accident. That really struck them and made them think.

Shee, I kept marveling at the verisimilitude of the film as well. It can't have been real, but the crash seemed so. We'd be watching a snuff film if it were real, and I don't think the UK would allow that.

Interesting point, pesky, re showing the real thing because even *this* can't get through their egos. Did you see the example of one such disaster waiting to happen on the same page? It's a Dr. Phil episode, of all things, and although I never watch that show, I showed my daughter the clip below (NOT the one I linked to above), and she thought *it* must have been a joke--couldn't think anyone would be that glibly stupid.

It would make a lot of difference if there was a class in high school where they had to go and care for someone who has been injured from something like this. I won't watch the video because I've seen my family trapped in thier car. I only wish it wasn't real.

I agree. I know at our high school every year they would do a reenactment of a car accident. It was geared towards prom night. Unfortunately I don't know how many people really took it serious. The youth today seem to be even more . .. _____ you can fill in the blank with your choice of words... than it was back then.

Totally OT, but I was just talking to DH last night about how I'd spend hours talking on the (slimline Princess) phone when I was a teenager. I had a phone in my bedroom (not my own line though), which my parents threatened to take out numerous times. Actually, I think they did take it away a time or two when I was grounded. But the days of teenagers lounging around the house and hanging on the phone at home are long gone, I guess. Now the phone goes with them everywhere they go, although I do note that they still all seem to be "glued" to it. ;-)

Texting and using phones should both be illegal when behind the wheel.

We found out a couple of days ago a childhood friend of my daughter was in a terrible accident a little over a week ago. They think she got distracted from the road when she was trying to look through her purse for her phone.

She was going at least the speed limit or faster and hit a tree. The impact was so hard that the car engine came up through the dashboard and pinned her in. The bottom half of her body was crushed. They've been trying to save her legs, but it's not looking so good. She's a mother with 2 kids, and only 32 years old. To add to the problem them have no health insurance. Thank goodness she didn't hit another car, but her life and the lives of her family have changed forever. I agree that phones and texting in a car should be illegal.

Lukkiirish, that's horrible. Yes, texting/phoning should indeed be illegal while driving.

I had to tap my horn twice within the span of an hour today while behind two different cars at different intersections. The light turned green - we're waiting, we're waiting, we're waiting -- but the person in front of me (both times) was too busy entering numbers or texts into their phone to pay attention to the road, and just sat there. It's asinine, and only seems to be getting worse ...
