My '69 Betty Crocker cookbook has been in shreds for years, but I've never been able to find another one . . . except for that collector's edition on Amazon for $350, like I'd ever pay that, LOL. So, I'm snooping in a Once Upon a Child store in Minneapolis (did I tell you I'm going to be a first-time grandma this summer?!?) and struck out in that department. But . . . next door was a used book store, and of course, I was drawn to the cooking section. Guess what I found . . . not only in mint condition . . . but as I flipped through it, I actually found the little wedding gift card to its non-appreciative happy couple! Oh yeah, marked $7.98!

That's wonderful! Enjoy! I have two from the 50s and one from 1961. Minneapolis is a wonderful place to find vintage things. I just bet the couple in question got two or more of those. When I lived there one could find all sorts of new in box household goodies, presumably duplicate wedding gifts that were held onto "just in case" only the just in case often never came since things were made so well then.

You never know where you will find a used bookstore that is a gold mine. We were in Chico, CA last fall and the used book store there had an amazing cookbook shelf. It is a college town and I wondered how many of the cookbooks were the ones hopeful parents equipped their children with when sending them off to school. :^) Or on a more positive note, maybe the bookstore keeps a good cookbook collection because they sell well to students who want to do some cooking.

Alberta, How are you doing now? Has the initial shock warn off a bit? Try to look at it this way when it comes to you. Age is just a number, drum that in to your head about yourself. Then start thinking this way, I'm going to be a great grandmother and I'm only 62, Yup, only 62 and I can still enjoy having those littleones around me and teaching them plenty of things, especially gardening. Most great grandmothers are much older and don't really get the chance to enjoy their great grandchildren they way you will be able to. Congrats Fran

I had to laugh when I saw the jar opener next to the silver salt & pepper shakers! I was also shocked to see sterling silver - those are very beautiful, and I love the way they photograph - in the close-up view I can almost see a reflection of the photographer, but she managed to hide herself very well. The jar opener looks like it will be very useful - mine works but could be better. I kept translating the name "Liebling" as "darling" while I was reading the posts until I noticed that it was the author's name. I scrolled past the first part too fast. I had a client in San Francisco who had a house high up on Telegraph Hill, and I worked on several rooms in that house. The views there are the best! It sounds like your friends were his neighbors. I also like the square plates and am another fleur de lis fan, having a French grandmother on my father's side. Very impressive! Lars

Good for you IÂm glad it was that easy for you. It took nine months of the GE repairman coming to my house every Monday before GE finally replaced my less than 2 year old refrigerator. My neighbor thought I was having a fling with the young man and ask DH about it. LOL He replaced everything in the refrigerator and it still froze everything I put in it. I havenÂt any reason to believe that the new one will last five years and you bet I will never buy GE again. Claudia

teresa, it's different every time; just depends on my mood. Sometimes I brush olive oil on the lavash, then top . . . sometimes I use a marinara sauce. Sometimes I use just veggies, other times I add meats; always lots of cheese. I always crisp up the plain lavash in the oven before topping, though not completely crisp because they cook so fast. Then once they're topped, they only take about 5 mn. @ 450 to cook. You have to watch them because they go fast (as you can guess I learned the hard way :)

FYI there's a used bookstore in Eureka, CA that has a great cookbook section too. I did some damage in there when DH was working on a business deal!

Yay! I love finding things like that. I've been on the hunt for "Beard on Bread" for awhile now. I know I can get it online easily, but I'd rather find it in the Goodwill or a garage sale for next to nothing :)

I agree, congratulations on all three things. I'll always remember you as the source for my favorite cake recipe, that Hot Milk Cake, so thank you again for that.

Tracey, I just got "Beard on Bread", softcopy, for free. My boss had two, and kept the hardcopy.

I just love used bookstores, although I need more books like I need a hole right square in my head. Oh wait, I have THAT too, starts at one ear and ends at the other, LOL. Dad used to tell me that if he wanted to keep me occupied all afternoon he'd just give me five bucks and drop me at a used book store.

re used bookstores . . . my library has a dangerous room where they sell their overstock; anywhere from 10 cents to $3.00. Of course, I head straight for the cooking section where I've gotten many beautiful cookbooks. (sigh, I DO have "addict" stamped across my forehead, but I don't think I'm alone here :) I once said something about the expense of entering that room, and the clerk snarled about how cheap everything was . . . but she cackled like an old hen when I told her it wasn't the BOOKS that were expensive, it was the addition of the new wing I was going to have to build to house all my cookbooks!

Scott, I never even THOUGHT that the '69 BC cookbook might have been a duplicate wedding gift!!! Now I feel kind of guilty for thinking the new couple was unappreciative, but I couldn't get myself to throw that card away anyway, so it's taped inside the cover as a reminder of my lucky find :)
