heat/air cond So Calif

We live in Riverside California. Looking to get a new airconditioing/heater set up. Have an older (1960's) leaky 3700 sf single level ranch type home. 8 foot ceilings mostly. Has 2 zones. Separate heater and airconditioner for each zone. Gas heater and gas (yes gas)air conditioner. Both heat and airconditioning systems are ready for replacement. Riverside is warm in the summer and relatively mild in the winter. Air conditioning is the system that uses the most energy. Heating is not to difficult. Would like to incorporte zoning to the duct system. In a few years will just be 2 of us in thie big house and do not want to heat and cool unused rooms. The two closets for the two "zones" are only about 27 feet apart, so one big system could be ducted together to eliminate the dual set up. Have access to excavation equipment and mechanical background. Have lots of room for geothermal closed loop system (over 1 acre of flat land). Priced geo a few years ago and was hard to justify the cost. Electric rates continue to rise but not sure if they will justify the geothermal. We intend to stay in the house another 30 years or so so have a long payback period. Geo, conventional gas heat and electric air condition, heat pump or? Most use conventional gas heat and electric airconditioning, but looking for something better. Coments appreciated.
