Goodman Package Unit no air cond.

1989 PG024075-1AB, mounted on ground, cement slab.

The heat works fine. I replaced heat exchanger, wiring, roll out switch, insulation, gas valve and vent motor myself two years ago, with help from people on this forum.

The air cond. worked all last summer but when switching back to heat last October, the transformer burned. Replaced transformer and added a 4 amp fuse in 24 volt transformer line. Used heat all winter with no problems.

Now switching back to air cond. Transformer fuse blew. Replaced fuse. Again, the fan runs, the heat comes on, but fuse blew again when switching to air cond. Replaced fuse with only size available, 5 amp.

Again, fan runs, heat works, but switching to air cond blew fuse again. Replaced fuse again and fan and heat work so transformer is still good. No need to try air cond again and blow another fuse.

Does this problem sound familiar to anyone? I'm sure I need a service call but would like to know in advance what to expect.

You obviously have a short somewhere in the low voltage side going to the contactor..or maybe the contactor itself.
*** Turn power off to unit*** Pull the two low voltage wires off each side of the contactor. Put a piece of tape covering the terminals so they wont touch something and short out. Replace the fuse. Turn power back on and turn to cool. If the fuse doesnt pop, its in the contactor. If it still blows, trace each one of the low voltage wires you disconnected from the contactor and find the bare wire.
If you cant find anything & it's still blowing fuses, disconnect all the wires to the LVTB (low voltage terminal board), turn power on and then jump between R&Y terminals. If the unit fires up, its either in the t-stat wire or in the T-stat itself.

*** Be careful... High voltage is everywhere ! ***

Now I feel much better about the problem. I have a background in electric/electronic work from before I retired long ago so I think I can do what you suggest tomorrow if the rain stops long enough. HVAC was not one of my skills. I was afraid it would be some heavy mechanical parts that cost many $$$$.
Thank you for the high voltage warning. Such is always appropriate no matter what the skill level. If you get the chance, go to the Web page below and see the cracked heat exchanger I replaced. Doing that was also an education.

It's a wood frame structure, built about 1970-71. Wood floors, ducting and return is all from below. Two layers of wood siding on outside walls. There are 4 windows in the big room, 2 on each side; mid size room (12x15) has 1 window; smallest room has 3 windows and lots of sun exposure on West side. Whole thing was reinsulated above and below and in walls in 2005 - w/batts. Each room has ceiling fans. Unit is on one end of building and rooms are in a straight line, so total run length of main SA is about 40-50 feet. The funny is that the 4th room (16x20) has 7 windows, 14ft ceiling and is currently NOT sealed by any stretch of imagination and it stays cooler than anything else. I've always argued that the ducting was grossly undersized, but the installer/HVAC company kept disagreeing...saying the unit was too small due to the one room with the vaulted ceiling. Another installer/company said it was on the low end of acceptable for a 3T unit - now it's running a 5T unit.

The fan went out on my Lennox heat pump in late spring. My regular Lennox dealer's service man estimated the cost to replace the fan would be about $380 plus parts. I have a handyman that said he could look over the fan and see if he could do it. He could. Meantime I went to the Granger supply catalog on-line and entered the fan model he gave me and they had many equivalent replacements from about $70 to $120. I chose the more expensive one because it was rated at the highest operating temperature and had windings capable of drawing more current. It cost me $50 to have him put it and a replacement starting capacitor in (2 hours @ $25 per hour). The motor itself only cost me $80 because we have a local Grange supply store and they were a lot cheaper there than online. You have to have a business license or know someome who does to shop there. Giving the Lennox dealer a normal 30% markup The fan and capacitor should cost you less than $150. If labor is $70/hr, 2 hours would have been $140, for a total of less than $290. I live in the Pacific Northwest. Hope this helps.

I did a lot of research before replacing my old system and went with Trane. A big consideration was how much longer I was going to live in that house. Trane is a very good brand here in South Florida and was a big plus when we sold the house. Goodman/Rheem is a big seller too, but I was not too keen on Goodman. It seemed very noisy. I got ten bids and the prices could vary as much as 2k for the same system. Some bids did not want to replace the copper even if I went with the new r410. I picked a family company (father/son), R22, XR13 with variable speed air handler. No complaints except we sold the house 3 years earlier than I planned. (wife's idea). I would recommend Trane XR13/2 stage heat pump/variable speed air handler. The R410 vs R22 is up for discussion. The R22 is going away but the R410 is higher pressure. Make sure no matter what you pick they replace the copper. Copper was very expensive a few years ago, but it's is much cheaper now. York is not very popular here anymore. You might qualify for the tax rebate depending on the SEER factor etc...I did not want to put alot of money into a system that I knew I was selling. I used the online programs to check the "pay back" and determined the XR-13 was good for me. One thing I did like was it is not as complex as some of the higher end Trane Systems. Trane is offering rebates here in some areas, plus the utility companies sometimes do too. The key is all about the installation so that is why I called around. Even the "big name" contractors can take short cuts. It is a brutal business here in South Florida. The big name guy here was just too expensive (2k more) for the same package. You really have to do your homework. Read up on it so you can ask the right questions. My contractor spent about 4-5 hours talking about options over two days. There are alot of different options. tiger, you are correct, i should not have included the 2 ton quote for system comparison. It was one of the first quoted and I have simply referred to it as a general idea of the price difference between pack and hybrid. It is roughly $1500 less than the 2.5 ton hybrid. Speculation tells me there is ~$500 difference between the 2.5 ton gas pack and the infinity hybrid. I just thought that for that amount the upgrade to Infinity system/hybrid was the better buy. American Std. dealer had originally quoted an Amana unit, and when I notified him that I was not going with him based on not wanting the Amana brand, he offered the AmStd as an alternative. That peaked my interest and I put my plans on hold. During our negotiations I was discussing the single stage compressor on the AmStd vs Infinity dual stage, and the Carrier was hybrid etc. He told me that if it was the hybrid that I wanted he would provide that at the same price as well. ($6781) I thought that was a bit odd as well, but I figured it just confirmed how much markup he really had in the Amana. The controller is a Honeywell (did not give specific model) and it does have an outdoor sensor. I am totally on the fence on this one, either of the two units are more than sufficient for me. We do not plan to leave this location and want a system that will be reliable and viable for years to come. Both companies have been in the business for a long long time and have good reputations in the area. I feel like the Infinity offers more features and probably is more advanced, but the AmStd is an excellent unit as well and the warranty is superior. Please if I am wrong feel free to enlighten me, I need unbiased opinions to help me with this. I have asked the AmStd dealer what is required to maintain the warranty (if anything) and how the single stage compressor efficiency compares to the Carrier's dual stage. In addition I asked the Carrier dealer if he did insure that my existing ductwork is sized/compatible with the Infinity's requirements. I did not follow him under the floor when he was here, so I am not sure what he checked on the ductwork. I do know all were extremely satisfied with the condition and quality of the ductwork. However I had read that the ECM motor on the Infinity requires specific sizing to ensure it functions properly. Thanks again for your input!

I did as instructed above.

I removed the low voltage from the contactor, turned power on, switched to fan to see if it runs, it does. Then switched fan to auto, switched to air cond. and got air with no cooling.

Replaced low voltage wires to contactor. went through same sequence as above. When I switched to air cond, fuse blew. So the trouble is in the contactor.

If the short was beyond the contactor on the high voltage side, such as in a motor, I think it would blow the main circuit breaker instead of the low voltage transformer fuse. Is that correct?

yes... since the only thing you took out of the circuit was the contacor, it must be that. Replacing it solve the trick.

Hi fluffybunnysui.

You are correct. I pulled the contactor and the coil is burned and melted together. There are 13 wires connected so I had to draw a diagram and number my wires.
