Toothpaste from $$$$$$$ Stores

A few weeks ago someone here had a post regarding the toothpaste in dollar stores. I didn't get a chance to read it and can't find it now. What was the problem with this toothpaste? I buy mine there all the time?

I would never buy anything like that in a dollar store. Not all the stuff they sell is as it appears. About 2 years ago (I think?) they found a lot of knock off Crest toothpaste. You would have to look awfully close to know what you are using isn't the real thing. I'll google and see if I can't find the article.

It was Colgate........not Crest, either way, I'll never buy toothpaste from a $$ store

baking soda-- NaCO3 that might help remove plaque but you would be missing the fluoride that is the thereputic ingredient in toothpaste. if you keep switching toothpaste with no avail i am worried that this might not be the toothpaste. can you scrape this layer off when at times of the day when you have not brushed your teeth for a decent period of time? what color is this layer? does it hurt when you scrape it off? i think a clinical check up and more explaination would help figure out what this is. my advice is to call your dentist and explain that you have tried different toothpastes and try to explain what the problem is. best of luck

Thanks everyone. --- Kara_PA also sent me this. Gerber makes a toothpaste that comes with the little finger brush. It's pretty expensive -- about $4.50. The ad you probably saw was for the makers of oral-jel. They just came out with a toddler toothpaste that's flouride free. It's much more reasonably priced, too. Tom's of Maine also makes one -- I think it's called Silly Strawberry -- but that's harder to find (at least in my area). Feel free to share this on the board. --- Just so everyone understands, I do believe in teaching my toddler "no." My intent right now is to establish a habit. I think establishing the habit will be easier if ds sees that mommy and daddy get the same amount of toothpaste that he does without refills. Adella

I don't find this either new nor worthy of thought, it's been long known. I've read that the highest incidence of problems tends to be found in small towns, smaller community hospitals, and larger understaffed public hospitals. A contributing problem is that the medical boards of many states don't allow public access to complaints, investigations, and disciplinary actions against physicians. Such information could be most useful to know which ones to avoid because of past problems. The secrecy is beginning to change in many places due to public pressure for sunshine on these records. The best thing for patients to do isn't to fool themselves into thinking they can become an amateur physician for themselves, that's folly and probably the worst approach. A much better thought is to try to be seen by the best physicians at the best institutions available in one's region and that often means becoming a patient of docs practicing at medical schools. Find great docs, learn from them the wherefores and the whys and then follow their advice. Or don't, that's everyone's choice.

When did fluoride become bad for you? It used to be desireable for keeping teeth strong. My ex was a dentist and since our water had no fluoride, he gave the kids chewable fluoride. Both are now adults and have good teeth. I really dislike when “they” change their minds about what it good or bad for you. Eggs have gone from good to bad then back to good but not too many. Now they say a baby aspirin a day is not useful. I have a bottle of painkillers to deal with my post operative pain. I had a heck of a time opening it, especially since my incisions hurt when I pressed down. Just this morning I had to use a giant wrench to open a bottle juice and scissors open the bag inside the cereal box.

If my memory serves, there was formaldehyde in the toothpaste. It was manufactured in China and was a look-alike.
I purchase cleaning supplies, paper products, and small gifts at the $$ stores, but never anything that goes in the mouth!

My DIL bought deoderant from there and my son developed a huge boil in his armpit. The doctor told him not to use dollar store deoderant anymore...he's says it's cr@p! Not sure why but he quit using it!

like an above poster stated...small dollar gifts,gift bags,cards etc are good finds...anything else is garbage in my estimation

Please, please, please....NEVER buy toothpaste from dollar stores. My aunt works for a large company that makes toothpaste...that knockoff junk is not stable and could be dangerous!

Stay well, and do not ingest anything from a dollar store!

Wow good to know sometimes if in a pinch and don't feel like doing the huge walmart I will run in and get staples like that no more...Stacy

Are you talking about the everything's a dollar Dollar Store (Dollar Tree, for example) OR Dollar General, Family Dollar, etc (varying prices)? I've had no problem with items from Dollar General (personally don't care for our Family Dollar), but usually buy grooming items elsewhere. Think I'll look more closely at labels on the few things I get at Dollar Tree. (out of my way)

We had an employee who had a severe odor problem. The man stunk to high heaven! It was an extremely offensive odor.We talked to him on several different occasions and come to find out it was caused by deodorant that he bought at the dollar store.

He quit using it and the problem dissapeared.

Our dollar store carries brand name toothpaste, liquid hand soap, etc. I buy those, but not any no-name brands.

I even read about problems with Dollar Store items in Consumer Reports magazine. I was surprised to read it. They also mentioned batteries not being an item you should buy, but can't remember why. I also subscribe to their online version, so I will check to see if anything is mentioned there.....

I don't buy anything that will touch my body in a dollar store. Just too nervous after poison in pet food, etc etc I buy paper products but that's about it. I bought batteries that were no good and they wouldn't give me my money back!

I wouldn't buy those things either in stores like that. They have recalled or there seems to be stuff that isn't good in things in those stores.
