Replacing 25 yr old Trane XR800 2 ton - Need advice

Central Arkansas, mild winters hot humid summers

Replacing upstairs Trane XR800 8 seer unit that is 25 years old.

1100 square foot upstairs,

Installed in the attic

Manual J - shows a need for 16,000 btu and 1.4 tons cooling at 70% SHR and 1.2 at 80% SHR. If I am reading this correctly

I have been quoted the following

TDHIB040A9241A - 95% furnace/40,000 BTU

4TXCB025BC - 2 Ton Cooling

4TTR5024 - 2 Ton Condensing Unit, 15 Seer XR15

1-TCON 800 programable thermostat

Total cost $4999.00 plus tax. Not counting local utility rebate of $600 for the 95% or higher furnace.

One year free service,

10 yr warranty on Compressor, cooling coil. Furnace heat exchange - lifetime

All prices include installing new aux drain pan with float switch, new outdoor concrete pad, flushing lines, new return plenum, and bringing the service platform up to code.

My concerns are humidity. I am afraid that this will cool too quickly and not resolve humity.

Is the furnace to large?

I have heard some concerns about putting a high effenciency heat unit upstairs in the attic. Some say there is issue with the unit freezing.

Does this make sense?

40k btu furnace is the smallest furnace they make. no problem there. 95% furnace for your area is overkill but with a rebate of $600 hard to argue with. Size of the a/c is probably ok. assuming the load calc was done completely correct 1.5 ton unit would work but bad to find out on 100 degree week that someone did a half way job on your load calculation. being in a hot humid climate and being it is the upstairs unit (heat rises) run time should be long enough to dehumidify. I would bring up your concerns about humidity with your contractor because he can better look at your paticular situation.

dhome to answer your last question about reliability or condensation issue, I have a five yr old XV90(paired with HP) which was Trane's top of line at the time. Not one problem. I have never used the second stage of this furnace. Kind of like buying something and placing it in a drawer. BTW, I'm also in a Southeast location. That's a tough call as far as XV80 vs XV95 because of the small price difference. You will have to decide on that. with the heat pump condenser, you will probably just use the furnace when temps drop below freezing when heat loss really drops off. That's why I think the XV80 is a better fit for your area/climate. But $400 is really a small difference. a dilemma. I will admit I prefer the Trane over the Lennox. garyg, It is an either or situation XL14i with variable speed air handler, aluminum evaporator coil and Trane touch screen thermistat. Include 10 years parts and labor. No need to replace the lines because they are large enough. Heat Pump $ $9105 includes 2 -5K heat strips. or hybrid below 2 XL14i condensor with 2 Stage variable speed furnace $8208. XR13 with variable speed air handler, aluminum evaporator coil and Trane touch screen thermistat. Include 10 years parts and labor. No need to replace the lines because they are large enough. Heat Pump $ 7150 includes 2 5K heat strips. or XR13 condesory with 2 Stage variable speed furnace $6985. Gas rates are somewhat confusing for two reasong 1. They under reported July and caught in August. 2. we have distrubtion rate, gas supply rate,weather normalization adj rate, base rate adj and EE cost rate. All of which is different.

JZ What size and efficiency furnace are you replacing? BTUs please. Let's break down the quote. I have to admit I don't follow your dealer's logic. The smaller furnace quoted is a two stg var spd 80% eff furnace. The larger furnace is a two stg var speed 95% eff furnace. Both will require a two stg thermostat for best operation. I am not familiar with Emerson thermostats. On the coil, dealer has quoted a third party ADP evap coil. That's not what I would recommend. I would want the best matching Rheem coil for your application. Certainly a point to raise with dealer. How do you filter your return air? I would also ask dealer to verify mdl number of AC condenser. Not certain but I believe he is quoting a discontinued mdl. Post back. IMO

Tigerdunes - We have a sort of complicated system I think. We already had a Crestron home control system with a wall sensor in each of the three zones reporting back to the Crestron thermostats (CHV-THSTAT) located in the furnace room. An EWC control board controls the automatic dampers (model UZC4). Initially, there was not an outside temp sensor for the EWC board, but I had them install that last spring. At that time they also checked the HP refrigerant charge, so that should be OK. The dip switches I need them to check are on the EWC board - I don't think it is set right now to have the outside temp sensor control turning off the HP. We had switched to a different HVAC contractor for this furnace/HP install as they have a good reputation, but are not the cheapest in town. They work mostly with Trane systems and do a lot of heat pumps, but were not familiar with the EWC control panel or interfacing with this Crestron system. Their quote to check the furnace/HP for overall function and CO, etc is $135. My only real question is to have them check that the humidifier is running correctly (not hooked to a specific humidity, but runs when heat is called for); it appears otherwise that the system is working ok and CO levels are zero. I'm not sure there is much reason to do a whole system check at this point. When selling us the system, they argued that using a HP for the long fall and spring times is more efficient than using gas all year - for average yearly temps, using the HP about 206 days (some of that is cooling but mostly heating) and furnace 159 days. Last winter, I manually locked out the HP (a switch on the EWC panel) for most of the winter as we had a cold winter last year. I got different answers as to when to lock out the HP. The chart they gave us suggested around 35 degrees, but the salesman suggested around 25 degrees or so. Hopefully this winter the changeover between HP and furnace will be based on outside temp. Last year without the temp sensor, the thermostat would call for the changeover when it would take too long to get the house up to the desired temp using the HP. Regarding utility rates on the most recent bills: natural gas per therm: $0.9897 + $0.1177 distribution charge, but there also was a rebate of 0.26/ therm for change in gas rates. elec: $0.1015/KWH Hopefully this makes some sense! A heating load of 16,000 BTU sounds low. What are the typical low temperatures in the winter?

Will the furnace be in conditioned space? If not, then my concern would be freezing condensate. I have read heat tape can be used to prevent freezing. Ask the contractor what he plans to do for the installation.

neohioheatpump- In regards to the heat pump, are you talking about heat pump with natural gas or all heat pump. If all heat pump, the issue is the cost of running wiring for the heat strips.

mike_home - Winters can get low 20's and below.

harlemhvacguy - 105+ days occur. Not unusual to have 95-105 days with high humidity. Heat index upper 115-125 range.

Would a variable speed fan with a different thermostat make sense?

Who performed the Manual J calculation? What winter and summer design temperatures were used?

Given the winter and summer temperatures you have reported, the heating and cooling loads seem low to me. Your equipment sizes are problably correct. You are not as oversized as you think your are.

A variable speed AC will help the high humdity you experience in the summer. You will want a good 2-stage thermostat for control.

Manual J was done by a local Trane dealer.
Heating temp 20 degrees and cooling 98 degrees

I have recieved an updated price for the variable speed blower.

THD2B060A9B3VA - Priced increased $1150 and Seer increased to 16.

Which Thermostat would I need. I just want to make sure I can control humidity.

I guess I thought the poster's climate was warmer. If they only get say 5-6 days of weather in the low 20's that might be worth getting by on just heatpump with electric strip backup. If they already have natural gas then maybe they should spend the extra money to have an 80% furnace. I really like the idea of the heatpump for their climate because there climate sounds like the winters are not too terrible and the heatpump could handle that well. Ofcourse natural gas furnace with a heatpump is always better. That is what I have. I really like the heatpump heat for the milder cold weather (35 and above).
