Homemade Dry Ranch Dressing Mix Recipe

Reading the thread about homemade substitutions for all the convenience foods made me think about this. We use one of those recipes that calls for a ranch dressing mix, and I'd rather try a homemade version. I'm trying to find a recipe I can use instead of the Hidden Valley Ranch Ranch Dressing Mix (Dry). Wondering if anyone has one? Thank you!

I'm sure there's a recipe out there. I use Buttermilk Ranch Dressing Base from Penzeys Spices and maybe you can figure out a homemade recipe based on the ingredients.

Ingredients: flake salt, bell peppers, garlic, onion, sugar, Tellicherry black pepper, minced parsley, thyme and basil.

I mix this with thick homemade kefir. I skip the addition of mayonnaise. The recipe calls for 1 c. buttermilk and 1 c. mayonnaise. You mix 1-2 T. of the base in 2 T. water. Let stand 5 minutes, whisk into the buttermilk/mayo mixture.

Cindy, there are a bunch out there. Many of them call for saltine cracker crumbs, but that always sounded kind of weird to me. Found this one online somewhere -- maybe chowhound? -- and it's pretty good. The best part is that you can adapt it any number of ways to suit your taste. The salt can be reduced or even eliminated. Same with the dill.

COPYCAT H.V. RANCH DRESSING MIX

1/2 cup dry buttermilk (can use regular powdered milk, but I'm not sure how that would affect taste/texture)
1 T. dried parsley flakes
1 tsp. instant minced onions
1 tsp. dill weed
1 tsp. garlic salt
1 tsp. onion powder
1/2 tsp. garlic powder
1 tsp. salt (I didn't add it)
1/4 tsp. pepper

Throw ingredients in a blender or food processor and mix until it's finely 'powdered'.

Mix with whatever combination of mayo/sour cream/buttermilk/ milk you usually do. For 2 cups of dip or dressing, start with 1 tablespoon mix, increasing gradually if you think it needs more oomph. Same with recipes that call for 1 packet of H.V. One tablespoon was recommended, but you may find you prefer using more like 1-1/2.

Here's one I haven't long time!! Almost forgot about it! But it's wonderful and makes the most awesome toast! Dartmouth oatmeal bread.... Proof 1 packet of dry yeast with 2 Tsp sugar in 1/2 cup of warm water. Stir 1 cup of rolled oats ( not instant!) into 2 cups of boiling water Add 2 Tablespoons shortening ( I use crisco.....but bet originally they used lard) 1/2 cup dark molasses Mix and cool Add the yeast mix to the oatmeal mix. Add 5 or so cups of bread flour and knead until smooth. Place in a greased bowl, cover loosley let rise until double....punch down....let rise again....shape into 2 loaves, let rise until double and bake at 350 50 or 60 minutes! And...another Here's a Rye bread Makes 6 loaves. Cook 4 medium potatoes (peeled), drain saving the water and put through a sieve (or mash) proof 2 pkts of yeast (or 3 1/2 teaspoons) in 1/2 cup warm water with a t. of sugar. Mix 4 c. of buttermilk, 3/4 c. dark molasses, 1/4 cup of shortening (she used Crisco, I use butter) and 1 t. baking soda and 1T.salt. Add 3/4 c. brown sugar and 3/4 c, of the potato water. Add enough rye flour to make a dough ( still able to be stirred, but getting pretty stiff).Add the yeast mixture and mix well Add enough white bread flour to (as Mrs. Faust said)work it up, That is until it is stiff enough to knead. knead about 6 to 8 minutes, let rise till double, punch it down and shape into loaves. this works best in bread pans due to the long cooking time--if you don't have 6 bread pans, just "free form" the rest and maybe take it out of the oven a little sooner. Butter top of loaves and raise until it almost cracks on top (this is a very heavy bread!) Bake 350 for 1 1/4 hours. mrs Faust used to divide the dough in half and add about a t. of anise seed to -one half of the dough--I like it--almost like a tea bread.. Good Luck--I'm getting hungry just reading the recipe--it's really a fabulous bread! And this....known to Swedes as Limpa....and Ann's bread is wonderful! From the Kitchen of Ann Straight Swedish Rye Bread (5 loaves) 2pkg dry yeast 1 cup warm H2O dissolve these three ingredients 1tsp. sugar (meanwhile) 1 cup brown sugar 1 cup whiter sugar 1tsp. salt (scant) 1/4 tsp. fennel seed 1 cup shortening (I use oleo) 1/2 (scant) molasses 4 cups warm H2O (combine this), add yeast mixture Stir in 4 cups Rye Flour Work in 8 or more cups of white flour (I use 10 cups) The dough should be soft, but of course it should be workable Knead for 5 minutes Mix well--cover and let rise in warm place until double--- stir or punch down Dump out on lightly floured counter Divide into 5 sections---shape Place in greased pans--let rise Bake at 275 -300 degrees until done

This place prides itself on not using MSG. If they did, I'd have an allergic reaction (main reason I have to make my own in the fist place), so I am fairly sure they are telling the truth that they don't use it. Black pepper might be in it, but it is not "sharp" enough to have vinegar or lemon juice. The tang tastes like it is just from the sour cream. I'll start with this, maybe some paprika, and go from there. Thanks for suggesting the black pepper!

Got all these from the cooking forum and they are favorites! Made the spinach salad from Ann for a luncheon, it was a very big hit! Vittorio's Spinach Salad from Ann T Vittorio's was a restaurant in Toronto that we use to go to years ago. Salad isn't something that I would usually order but I loved his. This is my recreation of his recipe. Salad: Washed and dried baby spinach 4 hard boiled eggs, peeled 4 or 5 cleaned mushrooms, sliced 1 can of artichoke hearts halved or quartered 3 Roma tomatoes, quartered 2 chopped green onions Kalamata olives Dressing: 1/4 teaspoon tarragon 1/2 clove of garlic 2 or 3 tablespoons wine vinegar 1/2 cup homemade mayo or Hellmans salt and pepper Place spinach in a large salad bowl. Decorate with eggs, mushrooms, artichoke hearts, tomatoes and green onions and olives. Drizzle with dressing and toss. Can be made on individual plates as well. Dressing: Soak tarragon and garlic in vinegar. Add salt to dissolve. Mix vinegar mixture into mayonnaise and adjust seasoning to taste. ------------------------------------------- Nancy's "55" Salad Dressing (wizardnm) 1 1/2 teaspoons minced garlic 1 teaspoon dry mustard 1/4 cup vinegar 1/4 cup water 2 teaspoons salt 1/2 cup sugar 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper 1/4 teaspoon cracked black pepper 1/2 teaspoon celery seed (optional) 1 cup vegetable oil Combine garlic, dry mustard, vinegar and water in a food processor or blender. Pulse to combine. Add salt, sugar, peppers, and celery seed (if using) With processor or blender running, SLOWLY add vegetable oil in a thin stream. After oil is added, continue to process another 3 minutes. --------------------------------------------------------- Creamy Roquefort Dressing (mqmoi) 1/2 cup mayonnaise 1 large shallot, minced 1 tablespoon Sherry wine vinegar 1 large garlic clove, minced 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard 1/3 cup crumbled Roquefort cheese 3 tablespoons whipping cream Whisk first 5 ingredients in small bowl to blend. Fold in Roquefort cheese and cream. Season dressing to taste with salt and pepper. (Can be prepared 1 day ahead. Cover and refrigerate.)

I've made this one before and I like it. Homemade Buttermilk Ranch Dressing Ingredients: 2 cups Sour Cream 1 1/2 cups Mayo 1 cup Buttermilk 3 Tbsp Apple Cider Vinegar 3 Tbsp Worcestershire Sauce 2 Tbsp Dried Chives 1.5 Tbsp Fresh Garlic, Minced or Grated 1.5 Tbsp Dill Weed 1 Tbsp Dried Parsley 1 tsp Dried Basil 1 tsp Ground Mustard (prepared yellow or dijon is fine, too) 1 tsp Garlic Powder 1 tsp Onion Powder 1/2 tsp Dried Oregano 1/2 tsp Sea Salt 1/2 tsp Fresh Cracked Black Pepper What to Do: In a large bowl, whisk together all of the ingredients until thoroughly combined. Taste & Season to your liking!!! Sometimes I add a little more dill, a little more garlic, a little more chives… Fresh herbs can also be used. If you have an herb garden, go for it. Dried herbs are cheaper and still very tasty! And you probably have all of them in your pantry anyway. If you want a thicker consistency, reduce the buttermilk to 1/2 cup and add another 1/2 cup of sour cream Transfer to Mason Jars & Refrigerate for a few hours for the best flavor

Here are several I pulled off the 'net too. I used the last one in the No Peek Casserole and it was good. Haven't tried them yet as just salad dressing, I'm still using up an industrial size HV Ranch packet. Any of these could be made up as dry mixes sans the "wet stuff".

RANCH SALAD DRESSING
1 c. mayonnaise
1 c. buttermilk
1 tsp. parsley flakes
1 tsp. garlic salt
1/4 tsp. Accent
1/8 tsp. pepper
Mix together and serve. Note: tastes like Hidden Valley Ranch Dressing. Dry onion flakes may be added if desired. I prefer the dressing without onions.

HOMEMADE RANCH DRESSING
1/4 c. powdered buttermilk
3 tbsp. dried minced onions
3 tbsp. minced dried parsley
1 tbsp. dried minced chives
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. garlic powder
1/2 tsp. ground celery seed
1/2 tsp. ground black pepper
In a bowl or jar which you can cover - combine all ingredients. Mix well. Store tightly covered until ready to use. Makes about 3/4 cup mix. Enough to prepare 8 cups of dressing.
For Ranch Dressing: Combine 1 1/2 tablespoons of mix to 1/2 cup milk and 1/2 cup mayonnaise.

Ranch Dressing
Â 1 cup mayonnaise
Â 1/2 cup sour cream
Â 1/4 cup of milk
Â 1 teaspoon parsley
Â 1 teaspoon garlic powder or mashed fresh garlic
Â 1 teaspoon chopped onion
1. Just mix all of the ingredients together.
2. Chill for at least an hour before serving.

Â 1/2 C. mayo
Â 1/2 C. yogurt
Â 1 tsp dill
Â 2 tsp parsley
Â 1/4 tsp, garlic salt
Â 1/4 tsp. onion salt
Â 1/4 tsp. pepper

Wisk all ingredients together and youÂre done!
