Should we rip up the old tile basement floor?

Hello,

We have a raised ranch. Presently, the basement which is half above grade and half below grade, has some sort of tile fllor glued to the concrete floor. Mt tile contrcator mentioned it might be asbestos tiles, but not sure. They are attached using the old black tar stuff,, I guess its called "cut"???

But anyways, on top of that, we have indoor outdoor carpet. We are putting new carpeting down with an appropriate pad. No problem pulling up the existing carpet, and I realize the potential problems with the tile, but should we take up the tile floor? Is it necessary? It seems like, it would provide another sort of barrier between the pad and the concrete. We dont have any mositsure problems whatsoever, other than the typical muggy summers, which are resolved via dehumidifiers.

I greatly appreciate your thoughts and opinions.

P.S. the tiles do come up somewhat easy, hammer and chisel. It sort of looks like a cork type of tile..It was probably put down in 60's or 70's or so....
