Well, by my earlier mistake, we have really stretched his day out, haven't we? Hope you have a great one to-day, Ed. You deserve lots of attention and I guess, unwittingly, I have helped you get it.

Shareclub usually meets in the boardroom of a daycare behind a Lutheran church, while the caretaker cleans. When we arrived tonight - door locked. Called the caretaker - he's sick. So we arranged for a room in a nearby library, at a fee of $26.50 for a non-profit group. Usually about 20 there, only about 14 tonight (probably some were missed by the notifying person at the door of the daycare). We've been meeting for years - usually have met where room is free. This is the first time that we've had to pay, that I'm aware of and I've been attending for about 7 years, I think. On return home, female canine (changing her title to "feckless canine") had torn the bottom out of a grocery bag hanging on the kitchen chair, chocolate bar wrapper strewn all over floor, she'd eaten some of it. When she was here some time ago, pulled a bag of choc. covered almonds off of a kitchen chair, ate quite a few, threw up after a while. Regurgitated almonds, even though (still) choc. covered, are not an appealing dish. She doesn't like being left alone - the other day, she'd pulled the garbage bag all apart, strewing junk all over the kitchen floor. After my return, I made the mistake of giving a tart a minute of microwave - to smoke when I opened the door, and some raisins rather charred. Glad it wasn't yesterday - or I'd have thought it an inauspicious start to my new year. ole joyful

Tried to explain to son how to get to the restaurant that I'd suggested, and, as his partner is somewhat directionally disenfranchised, and I couldn't give him a street address, we met at her workplace just after five (after I made the recent post) and headed for the restaurant, along some rather rural roads ... amid some (light) discussion that they had restaruants closer, in town. Anyway, we made the one where the Old Farts from church take their wives for lunch just before their summer break. Not many in the dining room part of the establishment, and son blew me up a multi-balloon hat to celebrate (he does this for kids at fairs, festivals, etc.). Visited a table where a couple of middle-aged ladies had settled, asking whether they thought my hat might indicate that I was nearing second childhood. We were about ten miles from where I live, and after a bit of banter, one lady looked at me and said that she thought that my name was XXXXXX, wasn't it ... and I said that I had to plead quilty to the charge. She, who lives on a farm a couple of miles from me, was daughter-in-law to one of Dad's cousins ... and visited my first cousin's home frequently, over a number of years, as housekeeper for his disadvantaged wife, a few years ago ... we've met a couple of times, I think. Her husband died (of cancer?) a few months ago, and I commisserated with her about that. The other lady had lived near her, her husband took his own life a few years ago, and she'd moved to the city. I'd been friends with the older generation of that family: her father-in-law was a friend to the whole community. As we were leaving, I said to the first lady that she'd had a late-teen son who'd had a battle with cancer several years ago (I'd visited their home at the time) and I wondered how that had turned out. It seems that he was in remission for ten years ... but recently it has returned ... with a vengeance ... and he was just in the middle of getting a transplant at that time. So I offered my good wishes for all of them and offered to say some prayers on their behalf. One never knows what may show up around the next bend in the road. Sometimes some little thing that one does, often at the spur of the moment, turns out much differently than one could have anticipated. ole joyful

I made a mistake today too, Ivamae. I'm a sub and thought the job was for today since I'm not usually called on short days and the call came in so late. The job didn't appear on my computer so I assumed it was for today--woops. Better than forgetting to go, I guess, just as it's better to be a day early for Ed's birthday than a day late! I'll wish him happy b-day tomorrow then. Thanks for posting and please don't feel badly.

Did you note the concern of the $3.50 parking fee when visiting a specialist? That was my only cost. In doing my friend's income tax, who was on income supplement, she had paid less than $60.00 for somewhere in the neighbourhood of a couple of dozen prescriptions, last year. ole joyful

I think in Sweden they celebrate for at least a week. I celebrate for a whole month. Happy Birthday Ed. I hope you have a wonderful birthday and that you receive lots of birthday wishes. Its your special day enjoy.

Car licence must be renewed today, had emissions test the other day (required every two years) and wasn't sure where I put the paper ... found it on the dash of the car.

Did some paper work and decluttering last night till late ... then played some ocmptuer mages till evne ltear - so raelyl late to bde.

Up a little fater nine, put on squeezy socks (the tightest of the three, today), got some breakfast, tried getting out the back door - it wouldn't open. For the last two or three days turning the handle the usual way wouldn't pull out the tongue from the door jamb ... today, turning it the other way wouldn't work, either.

First birthday gift ... an intangible ... unwelcome!

So I put the cat's water to heat, to help thaw some of the water that froze, after yesterday, and got her feed, then headed for the front door ... that I doubt has been opened even once in the past year. Second trip to get some paper work that I needed, to park by the door, to avoid trailing snowy boots through the house.

Haven't found the key to the front door, that I'm aware of ... none labelled, so tried several, only one would agree to enter the channel ... and the channel, being unused for so long, resisted ... so I went to the basement to get a jug of motor oil for the car that had a bit of residue in the bottom ... after a few pushes, the tumblers loosened up somewhat ... but the key wouldn't turn ... so the door's sitting there unlocked, should anyone want to plough through the snowbanks to get to it. By the way ... the snow shovel was in the back porch, which I hadn't got to, at that point.

Second gift of the day, also intangible - also unwelcome.

Storm door was willing to open, with some resistance due to piled-up snow. Third, rather inconsequential, gift of the day ... but welcome. How does one slide out the narrow opening if the storm door will only open about a foot, due to piled up snow? (Remember my story the other day about how to deal with it if a naked man offers you a gift)?

Car started - fourth (somewhat inconsequential) gift of the day - welcome!

Picked up the mail at the gate - fifth gift of the day - tangible: birthday card from niece, a sweetie who's a nurse in Alberta, her Dad killed in a car smash en route to work when she was a teen ... a welcome gift! (She's a year younger than my daughter - so to be 50 next year).

Almost a half hour late (after picking up native smokes for a friend who has bad lungs and shouldn't be smoking) to the ROMEOs' coffee and talk hour at the church that I attended as a boy.

The church secretary has birthday in January, and one of the Romeos, who liaised with farmers for several thousand acres of tomatoes for Heinz for quite a number of years: his birthday is today, also. They celebrated our birthdays last week, gave each of us a cupcake with lighted candle on a bread and butter plate. Standing in the middle of the circle of about 18, I held mine out at arm's length ... and blew a substantial blast, as much as my rather decrepit lungs would allow. I figured that if I managed to snuff the flame, there'd be some attention paid ... and if I didn't succeed, also .. and a bit of fun for all.

Did I succeed in blowing it out?

It's somewhat warmer today ... about 5 degrees F., I think ... but still substantial wind.

I have some beer and liquor bottles in the trunk (for the same friend, who, with peanut-level income, can't afford the luxury) to turn in for credit ... but not sure that I want the bother, in this chilly weather.

And I have to get the licence renewed today. Then give a list of several agencies to which I want to contribute, to United Way, for them to forward a major portion of the value of the stock that I contributed last year (which, transferred to a charity, avoids capital gain tax).

Dinner later with son and his lady.

Probably some talk with you folks, later, from the library. This is from the church.

Isn't it interesting how many gifts life brings us, daily? Lets' be thankful daily for them.

Oh, yeah - I figure that the best gift of all is the good health that I'm able to enjoy, in that, as I've said before, it's seldom that my body tells me, "Listen you darned old fool: I can't DO that for you any more!"!

It's up to me to make that gift useful, not just for myself, but for others, as well. We're all part of one web/tapestry of life: let's add to, not pull out the threads!

Hah! Poor you, starting your day with a wicked variation on that saying: "If one door closes, another opens." At your house, if one door won't open, neither will the other!

But you soldiered on, and your day started improving. Enjoy your birthday dinner and the company of people who love you.

At the investment group last night, said that I had onl.y 4 hours left to enjoy being 84 ...

... and, they didn't even sing "Happy birthday ... " to me ...

... plus, at the after-meeting for a few to continue the discussion at the arches fast food place, after ... I had to buy my own coffee!

As for that candle on the cupcake at the ROMEOs last week, that I held at arm's length ... I did get it blown out! To some merriment ... who thought that there was a blow-hard ... in this august group!

'Twould be quite a job - to get 85 candles on a cupcake: wall-to-wall fire, right!

The temp. around here is warmer today - about 20 F.

I goofed, earlier - drove right by the licence renewal place and forgot the need to go in. Looking for another place in the city at present.

Half decent day, all told.
