Hey OJ, a very, very VERY happy birthday to you... (in 30 minutes).

May you continue to share your wisdom, (however obtuse at times). These boards just wouldn't be the same without you!!

and for your first virtual present, a bit of philosophy I pilfered off someone's memorable signoff:

"Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, martini in one hand, strawberries in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and screaming: WOO-HOO - what a ride!"

So enjoy a martini (or a Labatt's), a physical challenge (sledding comes to mind) and some strawberries today. And have a memorable birthday!

Hi folkvictorian, Some months ago I spoke of having what I thought to be a problem ... that some of my old underwear briefs had developed elastics so old and tired that they were inclined to stretch things ... ... and would slide down around my knees on the outside, while hung up by the crotch of my pants, putting me in a bind so to speak ... ... but that when I realized that, were I a female, gone shopping downtown in a dress, and had such a situation befall me - that would be a PROBLEM! My situation was merely a dilemma! One responder said that she'd done such, they tripped her, she fell with her forehead hitting a wooden container in the store, with blood flowing, ambulance called, etc. - costly! I'd thought to install short pieces of elastic, but that would cause bunching, and stretching between them (with possible rips), and were I to install a new elastic all round each of the nearly a dozen pairs ... it'd be darn near as costly as buying new! So I thought that I'd get a single stretchy elastic and make a belt, which would work for a half dozen or so of the briefs, but came to ask how to fasten it, as a button wouldn't do in an elastic. Everyone said that I should merely buy new ... but I said that few were holey ... and the one(s) that were, were mainly in the middle of the back, not under the hip bones where they should be - so I wondered whether I must have been jet-propelled at some time (that I'd been unaware of). And they were scarcely discoloured, so I felt that they had a substantial amount of potentially useful life remaining, given some alteration. Someone made an intreresting offer - that if I'd send the affected ones to her, she'd replace the elastic in each of them ... ... for $10.00 a pair. One or two others felt that to be a wise offer ... to a frugal old fella like me. Someone came on to suggest that this seemed a rather frivolous post ... someone wondered whether it was for real ... and someone else said that she'd been having rather a dreary day .... until she'd come upon that thread ... and that it'd made her day! My landlord, a busy sod farmer (though not so busy last year, with fewer houses being built, as we've had a major plant closing, with a major Ford assembly plant nearby about to close next year) said that I have too much time on my hands. 'Nuff said. ole joyful

Hi Lindy Lu Who ... ... well, a WA-HO-O-O (not a boo-hoo) about that one! Thank you for making such a wonderful addition to this discussion! I have some Hanes ... and they're blue, too! But ... I've never seen them configured like that! Or ... so occupied, either, for that matter. Also, with elastic still intact - so they're not available for this purpose. Yet. Isn't this a wonderful idea? No more worries about the shortcomings (or, more accurately, long goings) of the elastic: in fact, if it were even somewhat tight, it might cause a problem. If any of you would like to use my old undies in such a fashion, I'd be glad to spring for the postage, even trans-border, to help the ancient briefs find some useful things to do throughout their retirement! Or, more accurately, delay their retirement! I can guaratee that I'll not send holey ones ... and you don't need to worry about the "baggy" that someone referred to, as the only part that's stretched is the elastic (possibly due to not having large body parts to ride herd on). And no stained or dirty ones, either ... solely ones that look to be only in slightly used condition. Then, with these still-useful things having their remaining useful life taken care of, I can go buy new ones with a happy heart!! Adding it as an extra errand when going to town to take care of several needs at a time ... ... and turning off the engine and coasting downhill, and as approaching signal lights when they turn yellow, half a block away ... to be passed by people pushing the gas pedal ... then hitting the brakes about a hundred feet before the "Stop" line. I staked a couple of rows of peas and picked some of the regular and of the edible pod kind. Took them to a nighbour who treats me well, and their daughter and SIL were there, playing cards. Daughter loves peas, I gave her several of the edible pod kind ... and she shelled them and ate them. En route home, I thought that I should have taken the edible pod ones back and given her some of the regular kind ... if she was going to shell them, anyway. Had some of each kind for supper - second picking - delicious! I hope that you had an enjoyable weekend ... and are looking forward to the coming week with anticipation. ole joyful

Newest update ... ... I did finally get around to sewing one of the new elastic free-flowing girdles the other day, when I anticipated a need. I sewed (at one end) a sextuple thickness of hem from an old sheet to the yard-long piece of elastic from the dollar store. Since I'd found that I'd never used the hook and loop (read "Velcro" substitute) on the original, so wouldn't have an option regarding length if I sewed the other end ... ... I tied it down with safety pins, till I got a handle on its tautness ... and my resultant comfort, as secondary issue when considering the main task needed. Works - so far. And another breath-taking piece of information learned on Sunday afternoon, when visiting my friend's house (who's familiar with this situation). Telling me that he had earth-shaking news, he rose from his seat and demonstrated the latest thing in men's lower-level underwear ... ... a drawstring! Who wouldda thunk! Now ... why didn't I think of that ... and patented it: I'd be set for life! Don't anyone tell the underwear maker, please, that, the elastic being the shortest-lived part of the underwear project ... ... that ones with drawstrings'll last much longer ... ... resulting in fewer sales!! Or they'll deep-six the whole idea! ole joyfuelled (with a bit o' help from a coookie or two, on occasion)

I haven't been out much this week - staying home and getting the establishment more or less back in shape. An art show has take over the village church today, and when I saw one of the old guys walking down the street away from the church, I'd forgotten that we were to meet at a seniors' apartment building this week, till I got to the church, then as I was going to the meeting place, passed him, there was traffic (four-lane street), I went down a short way and turned around, came back to pick him up. He was nowhere to be seen ... I almost went into a store there ... then saw someone walking down a side street, drove down there, picked him up and we went to the Old Farts' Coffee Hour. I wrote a story about the church magazine's situation, our discussion group, and my getting to know the other members in a much more in-depth situation than we usually find, maybe it would be a good idea to suggest it for other churches, to send to the magazine. I'd checked it with the minister of that church and went to pick it up today: she had minimal suggestions as to editorial revisions. Had a good visit with another cancer survivor that I've known for a dozen years, both members of an investment group: he'd had radiation and chemo at the same time, not a pleasant experience, and one doc had suggested that he might have only a few months to live ... but he's still here, and going strong. Fewer visits to bathroom, so feel that I'm on a much longer leash. At one grocery store today a staff person had picked up a stray bag of milk, and another said that he was careful about picking up stray items near the bathroom when the door was closed ... and a man came out just then to reclaim his bag. I thanked them for having that available bathroom, as I had made good use of it several times in recent months, sometimes when given quite short notice from an interior authority of an essential change in my plans. Weather's been rainy and chilly, but warmer, and the landlord cultivated both gardens yesterday, initial pass. He took out a full tractor trailer load of sod, yesterday afternoon: I was embarrassed, for I hadn't removed some of the stakes. So I guess that spring has finally sprung. "Spring is sprung ... the grass is riz ... I wonder where ... the flowers is?". Actually, forsythia and daffodils are out ... and some grape hyacinths down behind the shed. Can't resist this: one of the items passed around at the Old Farts' was a colour "pic" of a rather rough landscape, with a smiling civilian with an automatic rifle in a saddle atop a moose carrying large antlers ... titled, "Canadian Border Patrol ... watching for illegal Americans". Hope you're all having a good day - good wishes for the rest of the week. ole joyfuelled ... who, sitting at table right next to the stove, forgot to turn the burner off under the stew pot last night ... and had some scraping to do as a result

Library about to close.

Thanks for the good wishes, everyone.

Labatts' headquarters were about 10 miles away, for years - but they were sold and are owned internationally, now.

Belgium, I think.

Am thankful to be enjoying good physical health - don't think I've taken a pill in 30 years.

Am rather hopeful about the mental component.

And the spiritual is mending - I was rather p'd off some years ago, when the break-up of our marriage did nsty things to the clergy career - clergy weren;t supposed to *do* that!

So OJ,

You appear to be up late and on the computer. Did you get the one at home going?

If you stay up that late, when do you get your beauty rest?

(Curly) Sue...as you say, but not to be confused with the member by the name curlysue...just saw her post yesterday

Thanks for the good wishes, everyone.

I had a happy, if uneventful, day. Took the upgraded computer that my two youngies gave me for Christmas in to the computer store to get it connected.

Bruce came out a while ago and did some things to get the old one so that I could get online - but I get a lot of pop-ups that things aren't right, when I change pages.

And sometimes when I write a message, after cleaning out the misspelling, etc. - it blocks.

You know what "Control" + "Alt" + "Delete" does!

GGRR-R_r-r-r-!

Sometimes, especially on gardenweb, when I change page ... nothing happens. Sometimes if I press "Esc" - the page appears - right away.

Well, "right away" for dial-up.

Heading out to the investment group meeting tonight.

Another group heard from two local companies into medical stuff a couple of weeks ago.

Checked price of one the next day - 40 cents a share.

Almost bought some.

Price went to 60 cents, then 70, and 80.

Over a dollar, today.

Bid on some at 89 cents earlier this afternoon, but too few shares.

The guy checked at 90 cents - then the ones at 89 cents were sold!

Closed at 88, I think it was. Sernova Corp. SVA.V

Have a great week, everyone.

Shareclub usually meets in the boardroom of a daycare behind a Lutheran church, while the caretaker cleans.

When we arrived tonight - door locked. Called the caretaker - he's sick.

So we arranged for a room in a nearby library, at a fee of $26.50 for a non-profit group.

Usually about 20 there, only about 14 tonight (probably some were missed by the notifying person at the door of the daycare).

We've been meeting for years - usually have met where room is free. This is the first time that we've had to pay, that I'm aware of and I've been attending for about 7 years, I think.

On return home, female canine (changing her title to "feckless canine") had torn the bottom out of a grocery bag hanging on the kitchen chair, chocolate bar wrapper strewn all over floor, she'd eaten some of it.

When she was here some time ago, pulled a bag of choc. covered almonds off of a kitchen chair, ate quite a few, threw up after a while.

Regurgitated almonds, even though (still) choc. covered, are not an appealing dish.

She doesn't like being left alone - the other day, she'd pulled the garbage bag all apart, strewing junk all over the kitchen floor.

After my return, I made the mistake of giving a tart a minute of microwave - to smoke when I opened the door, and some raisins rather charred.

Glad it wasn't yesterday - or I'd have thought it an inauspicious start to my new year.

Servova (SVA.V) seems to be stabilizing ... around the mid $1.30s!

Too bad I hadn't ordered some at $0.40, just after I heard of it.

Or accepted a fill at slightly higher when I put in my order at about $0.87!

Live - and learn!

That's "Sernova" SVA.V or SVA.X, on Vancouver Exchange - I gave wrong name in earlier post.

They're making progress looking toward installing pig pancreas in humans, with a filter to ward off rejection, to produce insulin.

I heard a presentation about January 10 - just before it took off, almost bought some.

Check 5-day chart at Yahoo.com/finance, or a longer period at www.stockcharts.com or www.globeinvestor.com.

Closed Friday at CAD$1.30.

It's a speculative investment.

I don't own any - but am considering buying some.

I hope that you all have an outstanding week - looking toward spring.

Don't put a single dollar into Sernova that you can't afford to lose the whole thing, without shedding a single tear, O.K.?

This is a speculative investment - note that "Tier 2" in the listing.

Some go up, some go down, some go nowhere.

Some go up, some go down, some go nowhere.

I 'speculated' on Dollar General years ago, after seeing it had gone up and split numerous times. After buying it, the price dropped significantly, and hasn't ever come back up to my purchase price until today! Woohoo!

Seems they are being bought out, so I will finally recoup all my investment with a little extra.

Maybe SVA.V would be worth 'gambling' a bit on.
