Kathleen, what a GREAT idea! The pandoro form makes a much more "realistic" skirt, almost like Barbie is twirling. And the finished product is just gorgeous. Your decorating work is spectacular and the whole cake just flows together. I'll bet that your granddaughter was thrilled.

Kathleen, that is a beautiful job. I have a little DGD that would love something like that, but i KNOW I don't have the talent to do that. Impressive. I do envy people who can make beautiful cakes. I have tried for a bazillion years, and just don't have the ability. Gosh, do you hire out???

Kathleen, that's absolutely perfect for the Monkey Princess, Makayla. I made one a couple of years ago using a bundt pan and a Dora the Explorer doll, but the Bundt pan is too "short" for Barbie's long legs. The Pandoro pan is a perfect idea.

Ann, You put the fondant frills on with alcohol??? What?
I also did not "get" the deal with the toothpick to create the frills. They did not show that every well.
I am NOT able to do that Ann. I am good at many things, but I am NOT good at that kind of stuff. Everything I have tried always looks sloppy.
I think I will just hire Kathleen to make them for me, LOL.

LOL. I understood the reason for the alcohol. But way to fiddly (sp??)) for me. So I'm with you. Kathleen's cake is perfect. I'd hire her too.

The toothpick acts as a tiny rolling pin to make the frills thinner. The alcohol makes the fondant moist and sticky so the frills will stick on. Then it evaporates out.

Thank you all for your kind comments. She did love it, and specifically asked for whipped cream, which was really easy. I used WHIP IT to stabilize.
Now I have to go back and look at the video and learn the right way. Jamming her through, even though we drilled a hole inside was tough.
Yes, it is choc cake. I cut the bottom in half and put choc filling and the same with the top.
Her younger brothers had fun sticking their fingers in the cake. lol
And at least I justified buying the pan....I can say I used it!

Kathleen, I doubt fondant will ever be as popular in the U.S. as buttercream. But fondant can be your best friend [g], especially when combined with taste enhancers, like chocolate, but that's another story.
The point I wanted to make was that it's easy to get a smooth fondant look with buttercream. And I don't mean with the paper towel or wet knife trick, which is the way decorators are initially taught. Next time you make another princess cake, just holler.

Sol, I just played with fondant at Easter and it wasn't nearly as easy as it looks. Plus it was just corn syrup, powdered sugar and shortening, so it was kind of icky to eat.

I keep practicing, I know Amanda's going to need a wedding cake someday, I just know it. LOL

Thanks, Sol, I will take you up on that! I was at a very fancy wedding in Aug, beautiful country club, top of the line everything. I noticed almost everyone pulled off the fondant! Give me whipped cream any day! But, the fondant is pretty, I agree.
