Sad day, I had to put down my 20+ year old crock pot...
Comments (9)I did go with the Fagor a few months ago and love it - the browning feature is great although most meats in the quantities you would be slo or pressure cooking have to be done in two batches. I still find it nicer to have a plate to wash over a separate skillet though :) And - My larger pressure cookers are stored in the basement and not completely handy when I want them. On days when I'm not especially organized (and I have a few of those) when I've wanted dinner ready at dinner time and was going to be gone in the late afternoon - but had not started slow cooking something earlier in the day...I've set it to pressure cook a few minutes, then reset to slo cook on low till time I wanted to serve....tenderizing inexpensive meats further than the 'keep warm' feature would do. But it is only 6 qt. Nesco makes an identical product - I went with the Fagor because its an inch smaller in diameter, allowing it to be stored on a 12" kitchen cupboard shelf, with the door closed :) I was looking for a replacement to my 70's era West Bend bean pot style crockpot that had been a faithful kitchen help most of my adult life and got distracted by the multi-function appliance. What I kept finding in reviews is that the newer slow cookers cook hotter than the old, surprising some of us who were used to the really slow cooking....See MoreMy 10 year old Son
Comments (13)David: I think a lot of the disagreements about what are the best trees and/or which are "trash" trees comes from how different trees grow in different parts of the country. I think you are out of the best range for growing sweetgum. Here I am a bit too far north and west, but I never see them sucker, and seldom see breakage. Go to eastern MD and south and they will knock your socks off. Of course there are the seed cases, and I can understand peoples feelings about those. But if I love a tree, I ignore such things. I have tried the male seedless variety--or at least one of them, and it was ill-adapted to this area and had to get rid of it. It seemed to be too far north for it. No color--the leaves just froze off in December. I posted "In praise of hackberries" a few months ago and although many people agreed with my opinion of the tree, others in different areas described growth habits/problems I had never seen here. Here they are often so perfect in form and generally magnificent I could never imagine anyone not loving them. I posted because many people cannot identify this tree and it is almost never offered for sale. Sycamores! Wow. Here in Winchester, VA they are wonderful--not just my opinion. It is probably the most commonly planted tree here in developments, along streets, parks, etc. And they are stunnning! I can't imagine what you are seeing there. So what trees are loved and by whom is not just a question of personal taste--often it is how a tree grows in one area as opposed to another. BTW--Ken hates maples because they are not good for growing hostas under! Ha--I will never be "hosta"le to maples! --Spruce...See MoreCurling and Drying of cotyledon leaves 10 day old seedlings
Comments (16)Hey! Don't know if anyone is still following this... but thought I'd give my two cents anyway. My seedlings are at about the same point... 12 days maybe... and I've just noticed they also have the curling/drying symptom. This is the first year I've used coconut based growth medium... usually I use the Jiffy brand pellets. Don't know if this is related to the symptoms. I think that maybe they dried out a bit more than the usually do, as I am not yet used to the properties of the "coconut soil". About fertilizing... I don't usually bother until maybe week 5 or 6, after I've trasplated the seedlings into bigger pots, and especially when then go outside (still in pots) and less controlled watering might lead to leaching. (As for type of fertilizer, my mom swears by a course of epsom salts.) Lastly, I try to keep my plants over 18 degrees C in the day... I think that is over 65F... afterall they're heat lovers!...See MoreGrout cracking in bathroom corner walls on 7 month old bathroom
Comments (11)If you have a curb, you will have the cracks develop there, too. and where the walls meet the floor. Anywhere where two different materials meet or where one surface meets another that is in a different direction (known as "change of plane"). My contractor still grouts such places, too. But I did a solid surface shower that he could not do wrong. I am keeping an eye on the place where the floor meets the shower pan, all other places are in dry areas. So there it is just cosmetic. I would guess that water can get behind your tile with those cracks. If properly waterproofed it is fine, but if not, I would get to this as soon as you can. A lot of shower builders do not use waterproofing, even though it is now required. If you do a search on this forum for "Shower waterproof," you can see many discussions about it and learn what is and is not waterproof. (Redguard yes, Durock no, for instance.)...See More- 13 years ago
