Comments (13)Like everyone one else, I'm looking for something reliable, efficient and relatively quiet at a fair price. I was happy with my previous system (Trane) which lasted 18 years; it kept us cool in the summer where it easily gets into the 100's 90+ days in a row around here, and warm in the winter which is very mild, rarely dipping below freezing for more than a few days. Granted my utility bills fluctuated with the weather accordingly ($120 to $380), so I'm willing to pay extra for a higher efficiency system (16 Seer). At any rate, would you agree that the prices I've been quoted seem to be reasonable? And if you have any specific suggestions on what models I should be looking at, please let me know. Thanks, TT...See MoreTrane XR 13 vs XR15?
Comments (8)Tubeman What thermostat was quoted? What size heat strip? To your question and I will assume you plan on being in this home for 10+ years, my advice would be the XR15 configuration especially taking into acct your location and that cooling is more important and has a longer season than heating. $1500 is not a steal but it's not absurd either. Perhaps a little negotiating with contractor or dealer is called for. Ask him to sharpen his pencil. I would ask him to upgrade you at his cost difference plus 10% which would be more than fair. I assume the HVAC cost would be incorporated into the mortgage so relatively speaking the cost difference really is inconsequential. Ductwork cost is over and above figures you listed? As a rule of thumb and I know one has to be careful here, you would not want to be over 10% HVAC cost of the cost of new home construction. If you do elect the XR13, I would want the same VS Hyperion air handler quoted for the XR15. My ideas. IMO Good Luck!...See Moreurgently need advice: rheem rapm-jez or trane xr15
Comments (7)Thank you a lot for the quick response. Please see the reply below: 1. Trane contractor told me this morning that he can do it but need to schedule it. My AC is not working since 9:30am. It will be 95 degree later and we only have fan... We may need to make a decision this afternoon in order that either of the contractors can install the new system tomorrow. Please provide the link. I will try to do it this afternoon. If I cannot, should we go for 5 tons because we may build a small sun room (100 sq ft) on part of patio outside of my breakfast nook (sliding door to patio) 2-3 years later? Rheem contractor thinks installing 5 tons will not hurt the life of the machine because his thermostat will control the on and off, if we concern on oversize issue. Is it true? 2. My bad....The correct AHRI number is 4180435. 3. Rheem furnace model number. This contractor forgot to include the model number in his email. We are waiting for his call back to get this number. The information he provided in the email is: "The furnace is a 80%. The SEER only requires a specific furnace when a variable speed blower is involved. Before you ask, variable speed is worth up to one SEER and is not a very good payoff (more than 10 years)." 4. Trane dealer's reply to oversized furnace is "The XV80 100,000 btu furnace is a 2 stage heat unit that operates at approximately 79,000 btu and 52,000 btu dependant on demand from thermostat." 5. Trane dealer's reply to thermostat is ""Trane" thermostats are manufactured by Honeywell. The TCONT802 is an excellent thermostat and will do everything that you need and at less cost than the HW IAQ." 6. Both dealers are using my existing copper lineset but their quotes include flush of the existing lineset. 7. Yes, we will have new air filter cabinets from both dealers. I will post the furnace model number within a couple of hours. Appreciate your reply....See MoreTrane XR15 vs. XL15i
Comments (18)john you have AC now? what size? I notice in your first post that you said load calc indicated a 2 1/2 ton yet it appears you have decided on a three ton Heritage 15. Is that correct? price includes new refrigerant lineset? now to the mdl number. sometimes these mdl numbers for the outside condenser can get down in the weeds. the suffix is what you pay attention to. the latest version of the Heritage 15 is the following: 4A6H5036E and this is the one I would want. Changes within a model usually indicate an improvement or a minor correction. I am a numbers guy. For your situation, I would want the coil that gives the best balance of BTUs both cooling and heating, SEER,EER, and HSPF. I used the 80K XV95 for matching purposes in the AHRI Directory. Here is your coil selection with numbers. 3522126 Active Systems HERITAGE 15 AMERICAN STANDARD, INC. 4A6H5036E1 4TXCC037BC3 *UH2B080A9V3 34600 11.50 13.50 37000 8.30 24000 I would prefer the following coil. 3522258 Active Systems HERITAGE 15 AMERICAN STANDARD, INC. 4A6H5036E1 4TXCC044BC3 *UH2B080A9V3 35600 12.00 14.50 36400 8.20 23600 It should be pointed out that both have mediocre HSPF efficiency which unfortunately is a drawback with Trane/AmStd furnace configurations. I totally understand what you are attempting to accomplish. If this was me, I would ask dealer to call his AmStd rep and get the exact numbers for your configuation with specically your furnace. Pointedly, the question to ask is there a better coil selection for your application that will offer better numbers and if so, provide all the numbers. Now to the HW VP IAQ. No need to replace. How do you intend to control the heat pump and furnace operation? I would add the HW outdoor sensor to accomplish this. Finally, I think the pricing you have received is quite reasonable. Let me know if you have other questions. IMO Good Luck!...See Morek87tx
