You are like a lot of people shopping for hardwood. I was the district mgr for Bruce Hardwood. You are getting bad advice. Your reasons for wanting a solid is based on inaccurate info. That was what I meant. The first link provided to you is an out of state hardwood company. They of course will sell you anything you order but won't stand behind it. At least the other company is Florida based. Its just important for you to understand the difference and all engineered is not the same. Suggest you search this forum for Advice from a Hardwood rep for those shopping. I wrote that several yrs ago. You need to get better information. There are valid reasons for wanting a solid but you should also understand why your local dealers are advising against it. Sorry if I sounded harsh.

Here's one point about vacuuming extra fine construction dust that no one has made yet & it's key. When I went to buy a new brush attachment at the vacuum store to clean up our construction dust, the staff person educated me about a couple of things. Since the bag in our vacuum was paper, the ultra fine dust will flow right through it. Why didn't I think of that! Even with a thick, cloth HEPA vacuum filter bag, we run the risk of burning out our vacuum because anything that goes into the bag goes through the motor. Once that fine dust hits the motor, it doesn't take long for it to kill it. A Dyson being bagless won't work either, it just coats the inside of the vacuum, clogs & kills it. Kirby owners be forewarned! The suggestion of using a Rainbow vacuum is a good one because of the water filer. Of course they cost a small fortune, so I'm wondering if maybe a local rental store might rent them. It's not ideal, but neither is dropping $2K on a top end vacuum cleaner. And Mr. Rings, hopefully it goes without saying that a leaf blower is a horrible idea, unless your goal is to simply spread the dust around. ;-) I'm still figuring out how to clean up our mess, but hopefully the info. I've shared will save some from ruining their vacuum cleaners & causing undue added expense & frustration. Happy cleaning & good luck to all!

Ajsmama - I totally agree it was the installation. However, I'm really not happy with Shaws customer service at all. The last time the Shaw installers were out a representative from Shaw was also present and looked my DH in the face and told him to stretch the carpet would VOID the warranty. I'm sorry but that's the biggest load of bull. If that were really the case then as far as I'm concerned, every inch of that carpet should've been ripped out and reinstalled because it shouldn't keep buckling up. This wasn't the first time they were back to restretch it. (in the same spots + more) I'm also not happy with my builder for a list too long to mention. I know someone else should be paying but I just don't have the energy to argue about it anymore. This has gone on for 6 months. It's also an interesting situation because it's a modular home. So I'm suppose to go through my builder, who deals with the modular company, who deals with Shaw. The modular company uses Shaw for their houses. I've been in contact with the modular company as well but they're giving me the cold shoulder and telling me I need to go through my builder. They too will be getting a letter for different reasons. Just the fact that Shaw hasn't seemed concerned at all, refused to send other guys out that knew what the heck they were doing because the original two were already paid.. I'll never again have anything to do with Shaw carpet. Over the last couple weeks I've been hearing of more and more people having problems with their install. Seems to me I could paint "Carpet Installer" on my car and they'd hire me. I'm sure there are people out there who have had a great experience with them but unfortunately we weren't one of them. If I sound huff it's not at you personally Ajsmama! I just don't want anyone else to go through this. There's a lot to be said for companies who take pride in their work and do things to the best of their abilities. Customer satisfaction has been forgotten.

@ Bigrednole - I'm interested in the Sand/refinish quote. As a rule of thumb a full sand and refinish (including stain) should run $5/sf (might be a snick more if you go with the HEAVY DUTY Bona Traffic HD or Loba 2K Supra AT). But not by much (maybe $1 more per square foot). A $3.50 LVP is midrange quality. Some of the best products run $4.99 - $6.99/sf. Those are the one's with a rigid WPC core and 20mil wear layer (which is the BEGINNING of a good wear layer). To install LVP you should be adding $2.50 - $3/sf for labour to INSTALL. This does NOT include subfloor preparation. You will need to add on for the LVP install: 1. Removal of hardwood floors - $2-$3/sf for removal and dumping fees 2. Subfloor preparation (sanding/filling/sanding and repairing) $2-$4/sf ($2/sf is most common) 3. Removal and replacement of baseboards/adding shoe or quarter round ($1-$2/ linear foot) The TOTAL cost of your $3.50/sf LVP: $3.50/sf material + $2 removal of hw + $2/sf subfloor prep + $2.50/sf install labour + $1/lf trim = $10/sf + cost of trim/mouldings At the end of the day, there is NO WAY a hardwood sand and refinish ($5-$7/sf at most) will be TRIPLE the cost of install of LVP. There is just no way a full sand and refinish of a wood floor (assuming the wood is fully intact and no additional repairs are needed) would cost. That would put the cost of refinishing the hardwood at $30 per square foot. I'm sorry but I just don't see that happening. What is the actual quote for your hardwood and what is the square footage of your hardwood?
