obesity is contagious

Did any of you hear the latest... It was on the news here yesterday and then I heard it on the radio on the way to work. They now say obesity might be a virus AND you might 'catch it' from someone who is heavy! I think it's funny! I do think if you live w/ someone w/ poor eating habits, you may develop some of your own but only because you slack up your good health habits. I truly don't believe a virus can cause this. Did any of you hear this?

How crazy to even suggest such a thing! Guess the media will talk about just any old thing..no matter how silly or stupid.

I don't believe in the virus either.

I do think if you hang around with people who are heavier, your chances of being heavy are higher due to eating and physical activity habits. My kids are in an activity with some other kids. I'm constantly appalled at the habits of the parents and what they are teaching their kids. My kids went to camp this last summer with some kids that were heavier. The kids were heavy and the adult who was chaperoning them was morbidly obese and had diabetes. Guess who was the first to get to Sonic's happy hour with the corn syrup drinks on the way home. This is just a way of life for them. Sonic is just a rare treat for my kids because I don't believe in drinking that junk on a regular basis. We don't have a lot of it at home either. Bad habits are hard to break. I think it's easier to blame obesity on something else rather than taking responsibility for one's own actions.

suzieque ~ I'm glad your cats are doing well! The other thing I didn't mention about feeding my pups raw is their absolute JOY when it's mealtime. I feed twice a day. In the morning I make my coffee first, then go about getting them their breakfast. I cut Taco's necks in half, and apparently this 45 second ritual is just too much for her...after 15 seconds she starts to whine softly. At the 35 second mark, she sometimes pokes me in the leg with her nose :) hehe. Maggie simply 'talks' the whole time. She's a collie/shepherd mix, both breeds have the 'wooooo woooo' language. As I carry the bowls to their spot, Taco hops and dances. And heaven forbid if I am 'late' with a meal. Sometimes I'm involved in something and one or the other will come over and bonk me with their nose or smack my leg with their paw. Never saw that with kibble. cindyx - Yes, yes and yes. The marketing of food, whether for humans or pets, is full of half truths and spin. Look at the carp that is marketed to our children...sugar laden cereal, Lunchables, Hot Pockets, Easy Mac.... gee, is it a surprise that childhood obesity, early onset Diabetes 2 and heart disease are issues for them? And what about all the allergies, asthma, ADD, and ADHD? I'm in my 40's and although there were some annoying kids around, it's nothing like what I see today. What has changed that is causing these things? Pet food...Gina mentioned it earlier...it didn't even exist not too long ago. And just what is in it? To be sure, there are some better ones out there, however most are still grain based, which is simply not appropriate. The cheaper ones contain stuff that should be incinerated, not fed to any living creature. I will not say that the following article is 100% truth, because anyone can spin anything, but because the topic has been covered by a number of sources, I believe there is a good portion of truth to it. I think Medicare should be privatized too. I'm not in support of any government-operated healthcare systems. Yes, I realize that buying individual plans was expensive. The government has messed up the insurance market in this country for a very long time. A true free market plan with tax credits, health savings accounts so people pay for routine care on their own, the ability to sell insurance across state lines, and pricing transparency is the best approach to bring down costs, with providing appropriate assistance for low income individuals. I like much of Ben Carson's proposed plan. https://www.bencarson.com/issues/health-care/ Before Obamacare, there were also options for people with pre-existing conditions, including high-risk pools in 35 states and eight other states being guaranteed issue. People don't want it, so we should focus on fixing the system with free market reforms.

I read different news sources with different political leaning including some from francophone countries. That's not about "trust" but rather awareness of what people are being told. My basic orientation is toward math and science, but I'm cautious. Some goverments censor data. In places with limited medical resources and/or populations that are already challenged, cause of death may not be identified accurately or at all. Case maps are probably not entirely accurate, but they're good enough for trend analysis.

I never really thought about it, but quite possibly. Although women were really forced in during WWI (in Europe and somewhat in America) and WWII (Europe and America) and never chose to leave. Their choice, and if they didn't want to, I'm fine with that. Not that it wouldn't have happened anyway with the social trends in place, I'm thinking; both my grandmothers and all my great-aunts had at least a bachelor's-- a bit unusual for my generation. Nowadays it's much more normal. My mother didn't choose to stay home after my formative years and more power to her. As to why we're so resistant to stay-at-home fathers is another story. :-) On the other hand, I learned to cook (clean, wash, sew, and so on) at quite appropriate ages, and did so for the family as I grew. Simple meals aren't time-consuming and can be pre-prepared with some assistance. But we're really drifting off the base subject now. :-) I did see on the NYT that 1.3 million were receiving the vaccine daily: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/us/coronavirus-us-cases.html But those would be first doses.

When I eat too much fat, sugar, carbs, and calories, I get fat. When I cut way down on the fat, sugar, carbs, and calories I loose weight. Even though I'm in menopausal Hades, with diabetes, I can choose what goes in my mouth and on my hips.

I about fell on the floor when I saw that article. "For crying in a bucket," as my auntie likes to say. Are they just trying to encourage people to continue to eat bad foods and not take care of their health?

I'd love to have an excuse for my weight...and I do. I put too much food in my mouth! Yes; age, sex, hormones, medications, and illness can have an adverse affect, but the bottom line is eat right, control what goes in the mouth, and you can be much healthier and a bit slimmer.

Every winter I gain weight. This year I decided, in September, I was not going to continue the trend. Guess what...I weigh two pounds less now than I did in September. To a lot of people that's not great loss, but I'm so proud. Instead of gaining 10 or 15 lbs. "because" of the ND winter; I've at least held my own. This summer's seasonal weight loss will be a real loss!

My ex- used to say that if she walked by a kitchen ... and smelled the food ... that she put on a pound.

Do you think that kitchens contained such viruses, back then (over 35 years ago)??

As she was assistant-head for a while, then head for 20 years or so (up till almost 15 years ago), of food service for a substantial hospital, you'd think that she should have spoken with some measure of authority, wouldn't you?

Aren't you glad that the media didn't get a hold of her!

Just imagine what a message they'd have put out!

Not sure - I've heard of the right and left divisions of one's brain ...

... but this upper and lower is largely news to me.

We should try to learn something new every day, I've heard: maybe this is mine for today.

Is this a separate brain, or just a division? If they are two separate brains, does one find disagreement between them, at times? Does the sitting tend to settle the alternate brain somewhat?

Would you like to offer some more information on the subject?

Maybe you could write a book on it!

I've heard of some guys of whom it's been said that they appear to do at least a part of their thinking in a location proximate to the location of the second in your body ... but I don't claim any expertise in that matter.

And - I'd better be careful, lest I jeopardize/(ruin?) my partially retreaded reputation with regard to the subject matter of my levity.

As outrageous as this sounds - could be. I remember when ulcers were considered just a dietery falacy. Now they treat some with antibiotics. So many suffered for so long - being told that it was stress or diet only. I do know that many types of fungii have been found to cause many of our "ailments", and most of what is wrong with "us" can be attributed to the gut in some way. Maybe there could be something to this theory. If it is true, I need to be in isolation - don't need help from anyone else - LOL. I'm doing enough damage on my own!!

Our bodies have a "set point" with regard to weight. Once you lose weight you are very likely to gain back the weight that you lost. It's much better to control your weight early in life. This is an interesting article on fat cells.

Just another example of how people have to blame someone else for their problems. No, I'm not a spoiled brat, I'm bi-polar... no, I have PTSD... I'm not a drunk, I'm a recovering alcoholic (of course they leave "recovering" so they can go back to being a soak and blame someone else)... it's not that I won't put down the cigarette, I'm addicted to tobacco... now it's the fat virus. And don't have the guts to say anything, you're not politically correct. We can't hurt their feelings, they can't help it...

A good smack on the chops or a kick in the butt would cure 70% of these "diseases". And a lot of others could be fixed in other ways. With all this garbage, I just quote Jack Nicholson: Go sell crazy somewhere else. We're all full up here.
