Comments (3)I disagree in theory with 99% of the tree authorities on dressing wounds. Before I go into my typical abstract rant I will say if it were mine I'd probably spray up to the recommended maximum with whatever insecticide you feel is most "tree safe". Those are open wounds inviting in all the tree sugar loving insects of the world. My abstract rant says animals despite millions of years of evolution survive longer with bandages over open wounds. So would trees if we knew what to bandage them with. Unfortunately horticultural medical science is in its infancy. Something akin to human medical science 300 years ago. We just don't know what magic material or chemical to treat them wounds with to keep the cambium moisture in and decay/bugs out. There, makes me feel better to say it lol. I think your tree will recover as well. Just keep an eye out for opportunistic insects....See MoreShould we keep our Parquet Floor?
Comments (3)Parquet is often referred to as "Poor Mans Hardwood", and routinely used as a quick cheap fix for someone that wants hardwood flooring looks without the high costs. Personally, I would gut everything out and update, because the old lino and parquet is not my style at all. It's really a personal choice and personal opinion for you as to what you like, weighed agaisnt what you can live with, and of course a budget if applicable....See MoreParquet Flooring - What should I do?
Comments (3)You should never bleach any floor unless you are prepared to never have it be a natural color ever again. This floor looks and chances are its a red oak species. Red oak is EXTREMELY easy to stain any color. Bleaching just seems like an unnecessary option. If it was my floor i would sand and stain a medium brown color. That color is just a color i like. You can go whatever color you choose. Keep in mind the darker you stain the more difficult it is to keep looking nice. (Dust will show up virtually right after cleaning) Other than that nice find!!...See MoreParquet - Should I refinish? What color?
Comments (12)Thank you all for the responses. ColumbusGuy1 - the house was built in 1955 and I' m pretty sure the floor was original to the house. After posting my first message I pulled up a couple tiles that were damaged, and the floor is a solid 1'' thick red oak. I rented a commercial sander specially for parquet floors and it took me almost 3 hours to sand down one 10x12 room using the roughest grited paper they had...this stuff is like petrofied wood (which is a good thing, I guess). Picture below. I'm going to research other possible methods to sand down because at this rate, it will take me weeks to get the entire house sanded down (1500+ sq feet)....See Moreglennsfc
