Personalized license plates and bumper stickers

Do you have a vanity plate? What does it say and why did you choose it? If you don't have one, what would yours say if you did?

I ask because we just returned from a (boring) road trip. Personalized car plates always intrigue me. Sometimes they read like an esoteric message and I can't figure out why someone even bothers paying extra money every year to have something displayed on their car few people understand.

Of course others are clear statements. One I saw yesterday said 'FSTPITCH'. Clearly the owner of the car was into fast pitch baseball. (I was on a fast pitch team back in the day and that ball is *fast*.)

I don't have 'vanity plates' and am not sure what I feel so strongly about that I'd want to state it to the world.

I don't usually like bumper stickers etc. on cars but I wore a small first generation 'Obama' magnet during the election. A real first for me. I have seen only a few car signs I'd consider. One was "What *if* the hokey pokey *is* what it's all about?" Of course I only consider it because I wouldn't really want to blemish my car with something so silly...

What about bumper stickers and/or vanity plates? What do yours say or what would they say? Would you have them at all?

The road trip down was a bit boring so I pondered these things. The trip home was extremely interesting so there was no time to ponder stickers or plates and the time flew way too fast...

Hubby's Mom has one that's a variation on her name. It was a gift from her kids. I've toyed with the idea but just can't see spending the extra $.

I have wanted one of these since the first time I saw one:

WhenI was in college my car was covered in bumper stickers, but I just can't see doing that now.

How about spoiledrotten? OMG how ridiculous, I have seen those though. It's so funny to me how stupid some people can be. And these are grown people, so they say. (lol)

We use a combination of Nickel Plus and K-Phite. It's working great. We spray with both, using a sticker-spreader we got at Tractor Supply. We also add their blue dye now, because it helps us see where we have missed a spot. It isn't very easy to see through goggles, with sweat pouring down in your eyes. Just avoid spraying any blossoms, unless you are really desperate for a blue daylily. We were advised to spray once a week for 3 weeks, then wait 3 weeks before spraying again. I've only sprayed once this fall, since it has been raining off and on ever since. Occasionally, I will have a plant that shows sign of rust, but nothing like it was before I started using the nickel. I wouldn't use anything else. Well, let me take that back. I am going to try some Actinovate on just a few isolated and unimportant plants to see how it works. The only thing I don't like is having to don all that protective gear, but I wouldn't have it otherwise. I'm very cautious. We use goggles, a special pesticide mask we bought at Lowes, chemical gloves (also at Lowe's), rubber boots and a yellow rain slicker. My hubby and our yardman refuse to put on a garbage bag drawstring skirt, but if I'm doing the spraying, I wear that, too. I'll have to get my hubby to take a picture of me in that fancy outfit so everyone can get a good laugh. When the weather is warm, we get very sweaty in all that garb! We start very early in the morning while it is still cool. We have a big tank sprayer on wheels we pull behind our riding lawn mower. It runs on the lawn mower battery. We got an extra length of hose so we can cover more territory. One of us drives the lawn mower while the other sprays. I could do it by myself, but it takes longer to have to keep stopping to move the mower ahead. We wash the tank out thoroughly after spraying and run clear water through the wand when we have finished. Aren't you cold climate people lucky??? Nancy

marcolo - you obviously have some pent up frustrations left over from your bluecollar childhood. You also have no clue about how the industry works either! A GC can be a project manager or not. Can be a sales man on not, can, and often is, both. He or SHE might have employees and might not. That $40 an hour to a sub doesn't just go into that plumbers pocket ( less uncle Sam's cut) like your "salary" does. (S)he gets to pay our uncle just like you but, many get the privilege of sending a lot of that money in ahead of time in quarterly estimated payments, not taken out of a paycheck every two weeks like most people on salary. You should try paying your tax bill in advance - you'll love it! Out of that $40/hr comes professional fees an licenses and overhead like a phone or two, and a vehicle that gets outasite gas mileage and some have offices believe it or not, and then there is workman's comp insurance so if he steps on a nail at YOUR house you are protected, and many even have something like obamcare too, and lets not forget one of the biggest - Liability Insurance - you want your slave.... I mean contractor to have that , right marcolo? I mean you don't want him accidently cutting a water pipe and flooding your house and then leave you with the bill simply saying "sorry maser, I dinnen mean ta , I guess ya can whip me." So, what do you suppose all that is worth? Would you like to pick up some of you're job's overhead like contractors do? You can easily give your employer back $$$ for use of the phone & pay ALL of your health care costs, and buy your own computer and pay for the internet out of your salary - sound good? While your at it why not round up and pay him for your desk/chair and pencils, pens and all the reams of paper you use? Another thing none of you math wizzes have taken into account in the scenario is that the bid @ $40/hr include some material, drywall, paint, cost $$$ and should be deducted BEFORE you start computing labor scenarios. So, now we are really talking about less than $40/hr or $80k/ year , which really isn't - see weismann's explanation. To all of you that think the "hidden conditions" is just a scam - grow up. If contractors included everything that might happen in your job's bid you'd soil your pants when you saw the estimate/contract. You'd also never do the job because it'd be too expensive. The vast majority of people that did decide to move forward would be overpaying especially when no asbestos laden corpse or flesh eating mold was found in your walls or it turns out you really didn't need an all new electrical system. You'd be obligated under the contract to pay for that stuff whether you needed it or not. -OR- Do you folks think the contractor is going to assume all the risk for what might be there AND only charge you if it actually comes up? Get a clue gang. - AND / OR _ You'd all then be complaining that remodeling prices are ridiculous (even worse than in this conversation) and the threads would be about "how can I lower/ afford my remodel" And- why isn't a plumber or carpenter with 20 years experience worth $80k? Is your broker that just yaks on the phone all day, tells you to buy COKE and sell DOW and buy as much Fannie Mae as you can - "it's going through the roof" AND who is WRONG more often than not, worth $150-$500k + bonuses a year and deserving of that Maserati? Or what about the Calif. prison guards that takes home $122k a year, or the actor on the silver screen that get $10 -$40 million for 6 months work? Oh, he's worth it , cause "he's dreamy". Even better is the one whose only talent is she's recognized all over the world often gets $1milion an appearance - can't even tell the difference between cocaine and bubble gum. That's certainly a trait more valued by our society than making sure you kitchen floor is level or that hot/cold water flows to your sink for 30 + years without a problem or the lights work and don't burn your house down - so now I'm probably the one who has no clue. Oh, what about that mechanic at your Ford or Honda dealer that is charging you $90/hr? he even gets to work in a climate controlled building. Sure stuff is expensive - and I'm not saying that the OP should accept those two bids, but this is a two way street. Just because you you only have or are willing to spend $24,635 doesn't mean you can get a new kitchen in YOUR house - especially the one you really really have been salivating about. BTW marcolo, what do you think is fair for the nail driver to earn a year. What would you really like to pay him? How about: 1.your auto mechanic 2.your broker/financial planner 3.your minister/rabbi/priest - they should prob. do it for nothing? 4.the TSA worker at the airport 5.your kid's teachers 6.your accountant 7.your Gen. DH and I both have vanity plates - it's way easier to remember than a random string of numbers, and it's nice for finding my car (or a friend) in a parking lot. It's not as if DH nor I nor anyone else we know drives a particularly distinctive vehicle that's easy to spot. The vanity plate surcharge in NH is a pittance so many, many people have personalized plates. (I don't see it as that much different from the other specialty plates that many states offer, with different logos and mottoes on them. Those cost extra too.) Mine is DH's nickname for me, DH's is a triple pun that is way too long to explain. :-) Figuring out the license-plate puzzles - and some of them are ingenious - makes sitting in traffic a little less aggravating.

I have lots and lots of bumper stickers but I don't actually have them stuck to the exterior of my car. Someone apparently found a bumper sticker I had on a previous car offensive and gouged it off (the cop said it looked like they'd used keys), ripped h*ll out of the paint which would have cost me $500 to have fixed. So now I tape them up inside the car (usually one in the main back window and one on each rear side window, since I have a station wagon) and change them according to my mood. I had one of those suction-cup thingies but it kept popping off with temperature extremes. Some of the many I have:

and a whole bunch of political ones that would undoubtedly REALLY REALLY REALLY offend a lot of people here so I won't post them. :-) I've never put anything pertaining to any particular political candidate on my vehicle, just more... philosophical comments. Bumper stickers cost about a dollar apiece, it's cheap entertainment for me, and if someone wants to think I'm stupid or ridiculous for having them, well, let them have their fun. It's no skin off my butt.

Johnmari, I love your bumper stickers! The one about not meddling in the affairs of dragons had me laughing out loud. I'm sorry your car got vandalized and that the person who did it felt that doing something like that was so much more acceptable than whatever your bumper sticker said.

For me, I have the stickers of two schools that DS has gone to on my car. I believe in what these schools stand for (seeing the child as an individual and supporting the child for who s/he is, and that bring a worldwide perspective into education). I hope that this helps the school's marketing but I have no idea if it actually does.

And I have the Human Rights Campaign equal sign sticker on my car. It is small and probably a lot of people don't even know what it is, but sometimes we will be on the freeway and someone will honk and give us a thumbs up sign or a wave and smile, and I know that I have connected for a brief moment with someone who shares my belief in equality for all.

When I was in my teens I had a bunch of dumb childish stickers on my car. Also had a bunch of logos. VANS, Roxy, etc. Nothing that would make anyone blush. As an adult I have put some political stickers on but I'm in the minority here as far as politics go so we'll leave that at that. I do find most of them entertaining.

I have a bracket around my license plate that says Swim Taxi. I got it after we joined a carpool to get to daily practice. When those 7 big boys climb out of the van it reminds me of the old "how many people can you stuff into a phone booth" stunts.

When we had our business, DH wanted our biz truck to say BRDBTH (birdbath) but it was taken! I have been flirting with NEETC (Neetsie) which is my nickname, but haven't gotten the plate yet. Maybe when my tags expire.

I have named my rig, it's one of those decals and it says BETTY inside some tribal drawing. Everyone asks me who Betty is. I've also got 3 dog decals.

I've got an OSU MOM sticker.
"No Chains. Bring them inside. Dogs Deserve Better."
"The last time we mixed politics and religion, someone got burned at the stake".

On my old mini-van I had one that said "Stupidity should be painful". Loved that one.

Our other rig (my old one, now DH's) has "Don't make me get my flying monkeys", an Aloha turtle, and one that said "Honor the dead, heal the wounded, end the war". Also it now has an OSU DAD sticker.

I am OCD about stickers (and tags). Dang things come off the second they are inside the house, so I don't like bumper stickers on my car. I have been trying to find a non-sticky Euro style sticker for a dog w/o luck. I bought a cute set in CA when visiting DD1 of reindeer. Was excited to put them on last December, only to find out my back window is so tinted, you cannot see them from outside.

I love the "burn at the stake" and several of Mari's.

I have a Bama football tag and tag bracket.....DH. *eyes rolling* I've been thinking of getting a vanity plate with the name of where I live (community, not city) but haven't since it's hard to spell it out w/only 7 letters. I need 8.

DH had a bumper sticker on his truck years ago that said "Charleton Heston is my President." (NRA) An old lady at the Y where he worked out tore it off! Someone saw her doing it! lol

Jane, why is it ridiculous? I have vanity plates and stickers all over my Jeep Wrangler. Doesn't mean I'm spoiled ... I mean, spending $70 on something for my car hardly makes me stupid, does it? ;-) It only means I like to have a bit of fun with my vehicle, and what's wrong with that?

My plate reads "ICABO", as a reference to the fact that I love traveling to Cabo! (I suppose it could be misread as "Ick-abo", but those who know me realize otherwise.) My plates also bear this symbol, and the $ that I paid to have it on my plates goes towards cleaning up Texas beaches:

I have numerous stickers on the back window of my Jeep alluding to my love of Cabo and the Baja region, a "hang loose" sign, a peace sign, and a sticker for Del Castillo, my favorite band from Austin, Texas.

I'm a bit like Allison with tags and things. I don't like things written on clothing, etc. either.

Anyhoo, no vanity plates here. I choose to put my money elsewhere. What we have done is buy special plates (the view on the plate) that support our local national park. They are more than a regular plate, although not as much as vanity plates, and the extra money goes to the park.

An older couple lives down a way from us (we're in a rural area) and their 40 something daughter moved back home. Now let me just say, from personal experience, this gal is a piece of work, and VERY interested in the opposite sex. Her vanity plate says "PERKYVIXEN". Can't remember how she has her spelled out - but that's what it says. HA!

I have vanity plates that refer to Italy.

My favorite, that I've ever seen, was on a new Jeep Cherokee and read "XPAID4". Still get a chuckle out of that one. Must have been a dilly of a divorce.

Parma... we had a friend that divorced, lost almost everything to the ex... he ended up with a very old Volkswagen and had BENHAD put on his vanity plate!

When my kids were in college they couldn't wait to buy decals with their school name on it to stick on my rear window. I made them stick them at the very bottom so that it wouldn't block my vision.

I did see a vanity plate that really annoyed me. While sitting at a red light I noticed the lady next to me flicking her cigarette butt out the window while talking on her hand held cell phone (against the law here in New Jersey). When the light turned green she pulled out so quickly that I could easily read her vanity plate: DRS WIFE

I wonder what her husband's plate read: BTCHS DR?

I don't have vanity plates but I do have a sticker that says "Keep tailgating, I need a new car"

My favorite bumper sticker was one on the back of a little Ford Aspire that was being towed behind a huge RV- "Be Patient, I'm pushing an RV"

I don't like stickers on the paint of a car so only have one on my truck which says "Lightning 12s club" as the car window would block my view and I don't really have anything I'd want to put there.

Our car trailer before we sold it had a personalized plate which was 4DHALR.

I have no problem with bumper stickers, but will admit that I don't "get" the ones that are just vulgar. "Unless you're a hemorrhoid, get off my a$$", for instance. Who puts that on their car?

That said, I did take my driving test in a 1978-ish Ford Pinto that I borrowed from a friend, with a sticker on the bumper that read, "Eat more beans. America needs the gas."

My license plate is the same low 4 digit number that I was issued when I was 17. I have a 'conservation plate' that I pay $20 extra for, and the money goes to conservation efforts in Maine. However, I am waiting for this fall, as I pre-bought one that supports animal adoption.

I have two small black and white stickers on my silver car. One is a Euro style WOOF, and the other reads 'DOG IS MY CO-PILOT', since 99% of the time, I have a couple of them with me, and Sammy proudly rides in the front seat. Jenny navigates from the back seat and Joey always elects to stay home, if given a choice.

My nephew made & sold bumper stickers to raise money for his trip to Europe. They have I "heart shape" his name. He sold 200 of them! Once someone at a gas station asked me "who is so and so and why do so many people have that bumper sticker?" I still have mine on the car, 4 years later, but it's showing it's age and should come off. I'm the only one left in the family still sporting it & I haven't seen any others lately so I'm not sure how many are still in circulation.

The only other thing I have on a window is the cow logo for Heifer International.

I too have the "burn at the stake" one. I must have forty or so accumulated over time (and I'm talking about around 8 years) in an envelope in my glove compartment. People give me stickers fairly often - I keep the ones I like best and pass along others - and they're not exactly expensive investments. The ones from the Northern Sun catalog are the priciest ones I ever buy at $2.

Allison, although there is a risk of theft, you can mount a regular sticker on the very thin magnetic sheets from any craft store.

Barb, the dragons sticker is a spinoff of the line from one of the Lord of the Rings books - "do not meddle in the affairs of wizards, for they are subtle and quick to anger". I picked that one up in a science fiction bookstore.

I'll grant that there are many bumper stickers out there that make me wish I had a rocket launcher mounted on the hood of my car - usually expressing some kind of hate-filled, couldn't-pry-that-closed-mind-open-with-the-Jaws-of-Life vileness - but I would never even consider defacing someone else's property no matter how much they p!$$ed me off.

I saw one today that made me rather sad: "War does not define who is right. It only defines who is left." (As in left alive.) So true, and I wish it weren't.

However, I don't care to put any kind of advertising stickers on my car, just like I don't wear clothes with brand or store names splashed across them. (I do like to wear kooky t-shirts, I'll admit it, because I think it's fun to make people do a double-take. My favorite is worn to tatters - reads "give me that old-time religion" with a drawing of people dancing around Stonehenge. LOL) I figure if a business wants me or my car to be a billboard they can dang well pay me for it.

Reading all your plates and bumper stickers has been a lot of fun! I especially love Johnmari's "Do Not Meddle In The Affairs of Dragons, For You Are Crunchy and Good With Ketchup" one (LOL!). I don't have a vanity plate, and haven't had a bumper sticker since high school . . . but I do like and appreciate reading all of them when I'm out driving. My licence plate holder has "Oklahoma Sooners" on it and I have 2 rear window sticker on my minivan that I'm really proud of. One says, "O.U. Mom" and the other one says, "I'm the proud parent of a __ High School Honor Student". That's it for me.

DH has a dive signal flag tag on the front of his truck. It say's Dive Nekkid! on it. My MIL has been having kittens over "that horrible vulgar thing" for going on 12 years.

DH and I both have "Creek Geek" bumper stickers that a friend of ours had made for everyone in our little neighborhood.

I save my esoteric and/or subversive slogans for my t-shirts. My favorite is a quote from Star Wars:

We don't have a vanity plate but I love some of the doosies I see on the road. These are some I remember seening "serve" "kidsbnk" If I had one I'd want it to say "Im here" because being short (under 5 ft) I'm often over looked at the grocery counter (literally).

My vanity tag says BATTY

I drive like a bat out of hell, and my favorite poem is Batty by Shel Silverstein. Plus bats are among the coolest animals. I have bat stuff all over my car too- rubber life-like bats in the rear view mirror, stuffed bats on the visors, sticker on the tags, I painted bats on the seat covers, etc.

I always thought it would be a kick to have "Hoof (heart symbol) TD" which I first heard about on a funny horse race, see video below.

What I don't like are license plate frames that say "My grandchildren are cuter than yours" because clearly they haven't seen mine, and I don't like the ones that say "My child can beat up your child" What are they thinking?

I would like to see more bumper stickers that say "Don't drink and drive" or for my grandson's case, "Don't drug and drive"

I have Disney's Mickey and Minnie mouse decals on my car.
