What has visiting the forum changed in your kitchen?

I thought this might be a fun topic. I'm sure we've all made changes to our kitchens, since visiting the forum. Whether you're in the planning stages, still remodeling or finished, what changes have you incorporated, thanks to the help on the forum?

Obviously, there is a wealth of information on layout, flow, cabinetry, countertops, etc...so it might be hard to pick only one. For me, it has been my colors. That may sound funny, but the biggest change has been moving from white and cobalt blue, with light blue walls to white and black, with light gold walls.

I was worried that the blue would be too cold, but I couldn't imagine anything else. I had loved it for so long, the idea of a blue kitchen really appealed to me. However, once I started being honest about my lighting, my style and my choice of fabrics, I realized that blue countertops were not for me.

Then I found my backsplash inspiration and finally realized black was a much better fit. The light gold walls will keep everything warm and cheerful...and give plenty of balance to the blue accents and fabrics...and look great with all the plants/herbs. Also, much friendlier with the wood tones in the furniture and work table.

So, how about you. What has the forum helped you with the most?

Clutter!

Over the years I had added this and added that, presents that I put out. You know STUFF!

Looking at all the beautiful, well thought out and designed kitchens made me realize I had too much stuff.

Lavender, I had a great kitchen under all that clutter! LOL
Keep in mind, our kitchen is very big, so when I say I had a lot of clutter, I mean a lot...........

Other than all that ;-) I've saved and printed out so much for the new kitchen, if we ever get there, I'm going to be like you...

I came to this forum part way through our reno so plans were set and products were bought. However, I do sometimes wonder what I would have changed and I wouldn't have changed much. That is thanks in part to all the research we did and a KD who knew what she was doing. She talked me into a prep sink (why do I need 2 sinks - love them), all drawers, etc.

I might have rethought my stove but then probably wouldn't have changed it. I really don't want gas so flat top it is.
I might have put a more colourful/dynamic piece of granite in but I'm a very quiet person and so probably would have stuck to the giallo ornamentale. The white cabinets and hardwood floor would not have changed.

The only thing that I can't wait to change is my microwave and maybe the info here would have help me with that. My MW is undercounter and we didn't go with the drawer as it was $750 more. Knowing what I know now and always having to bend down to get stuff out of the MW, I would have spent the money for the drawer.

My kitchen isn't fancy compared to many here but it is vastly superior to what I had, it functions so well and I still have trouble after 8 months believing that it's mine.

I guess what has changed is an appreciation for a well-laid out kitchen, an appreciation for an experienced KD who listened to us and our wishes/concerns and a GC who was a joy to deal with because he was always on time and always responded to issues and problems quickly. I feel so sorry for people who didn't/don't have the experience that we did.

Boskoop was the #1 cooking apple when I was growing up in Switzerland, I still have a soft spot for this cultivar, because these were magnificent trees, picking in my teens on a nice sunny fall day high up on a ladder, I never forget! A good size tree could yield about 2 tons. Also, picking these lovely, red blush, kind of rough skin, which made it better for picking, not slipping out of your hands. We had some stored in the root cellar, in about May, the skin would have shrivelled up but the flesh was still good. OH...another thing I got to tell you... When my mom was baking pies in the wood oven, [farm house] we kids took one of the Boskoop and wrapped the whole apple with dough and backed it along with pies......you get it!...Awesome! Mydreamhome- You make an excellent point about the island, which is why I decided to make it a work table. I'm hoping to find an old library/trestle table, about 3' x 5' and put a marble top on it. If that doesn't work out, I'll look for a nice table with a butcherblock top. The dining room table will have leaves, so it can get bigger and I can turn the island/work table, so there's more room for the table to expand. I'm hoping to use chairs, from the sunroom, because ideally, I would have the work table a little taller than average (slightly lower than counter height) for baking, etc. I'm tall (5'10") so I don't want too short a surface :) The master bedroom is rather small, but the closets have a built-in armoire between them, for the TV and extra storage. We have a smaller room now and it's worked okay, so this will seem big, in comparison. We're trying not to add too much to the original farmhouse, so the only additions are the mudroom and sunroom/porch, with a few feet added to the hall bath, but that needs to be redone, anyway...and a few feet on the vestibule. As for the laundry room, it's a farmhouse and it's not fancy, but comfortable, so it doesn't bother me that people will walk through the laundry/utility room, to get to the sunroom/porch or the powder room. There's also the hall bath, which would probably be used more, by company...unless they're in the sunroom. It will also give me a good reason to keep things organized and looking nice in the laundry area (LOL) I'm excited about the sunroom, because not only will it give me a great place for plants (without kitties chewing on them) but it will also provide a cheerful, sunny space to watch the snow fall in the winter and see the horses run around in their pasture! The mudroom is a favorite of mine, too...it just gives so much more storage and a place for all those winter coats and boots. The hot tub is for my husband (it's all he really wants, besides the basement rec room) and having the deck screened will keep out the mosquitos, barn kitties, and the occasional racoon or porcupine! Life on the farm :) I want the house to be easily accessible for all family/friends to feel comfortable, but it is a farm, so if we can't get around anymore, we'll probably find a cute little manufactured home, put it up nearby and the house will end up with one of the nieces or nephews. That being said, my grandmother was in a walker and later wheelchair and we're planning to have 3' main doors (including the one to the sunroom) and large enough doors to the bathrooms (30"?) to make sure someone with a walker or smaller/travel wheelchair, can easily access them. The front door is almost ground level, so hopefully, that should make it easier for wheelchair or walker access, too. Plus, I think it just makes sense to use rocker light switches, wider doorways and have at least one bathroom accessible, without going up or down stairs...for any home.

Val Interesting ? - I didn't read any responses yet I found this forum late 2005 after we had a flood in our home. First finding the kitchen forum. I had so much work to do in a very short period of time. Basically an unplanned entire home renovation. The biggest being a kitchen gut & master bath gut. I could not have come to a more welcoming place. I was a maniac poster at times (might cringe if I were able to find my posts) - I had to move us out of this home, find a rental, movers to move contents out, rid of junk/flood ruined things, deal w/the insurance co., GC's, kitchen design, lead abatement, etc,etc, etc & 2 parents who were quite ill. I owe so much of how my home turned out to the talented people on GW - they helped with paint choices in each & every room, wallpaper, cabinet hardware, furnishing choices, rug choices, placement of furnishings, wood stain - You name it there was not a query that went unanswered. I felt overwhelmed to say the least. But GWers were always up to the task. I learned about hanging pics/mirrors which are typically to high, grouping artwork (still working on that one). Types of fabric/paints/carpets - Mind you I was much more concerned with the plumbing runs going through the joists in the LR and how that would be corrected. I think mostly I learned that I had capabilities and to trust myself & my own judgement. Along the way I gained much decorating confidence and became more engaged. I think previously my decorating sense was there, certainly not as educated or engaged. With confidence (much of it gained here) - I ventured out and started to do things I was interested in but afraid to really try - purchased a sewing machine & started some projects. I got an angle grinder & skill saw one Christmas & did my first tile project. I got so many ideas from looking through the eyes/homes of the GW group - still do. Where else can you go and get people(total strangers) willing to give their time and advice to help you? with anything? GW IS THE BEST - that's why I'm still here. Maybe we could have class of xyz reunions!

I am just soaking in all the comments. For sure, a thread like this helps us understand folks better and help keep us civil the other 99% of the time. I mean, really.. sometimes ya gotta have a thread like this so folks can blow off some steam and say things they want to say in other threads. It is also a great way to learn how folks like to deal with questions and how readers like to deal with those answers. These threads are good....so long as they are not all the time.. heh I, for one, have benefited from every single post I have read. I hang out here, not because I necessarily want more help (although I continue to learn more each time I log in), but more because I am hoping to give something back for that help. Can people be mean at times? you bet. we all can. Can the 'answers' sometimes be totally off base, and still be right? Sure. Take my choices for example.. while I think... no I know a lot of folks are right in their suggestions, in the end it is what I can afford and what I really like that matters.. until I sell. Many, if not most, the suggestions are not based upon what we may like, but based upon what would 'sell'. From all that input, you pick and choose the things that are not about the sale, but about the 'smart'.. and THAT is why you wade through the good, the bad, and the ugly posts. Now... back to my popcorn and show :P Russ

I'm still waiting to start construction but the main things that I plan to do differently are more windows and more drawers in lower cabs and a prep sink. I took the Sweeby test and read all the "Read me if you're new....", that led me to really think about what goes where and before I knew it I didn't need that many uppers and decided for a whole wall of windows. I did learn that marble and wood countertops are not for us.
I'm still unsure about everything I've planned unlike most I don't have a definitive style of kitchen yet but I need to finalize things soon hopefully construction will start in June. Pevo

So far nothing physical has changed just the plans.

I found GW only because almost everything I googled for, brought me to GW threads anyway.

Changes....

1. We are recessing our frig to give it a built in look w/o purchasing a counterdepth frig.

2. Having only 4' between aisle (difficult decision).

3. Having a large window.

4. Ditching the old cabinets and purchasing new modern cabinets.

5. Purchasing a SS farmhouse single sink (I still can't believe that's what we want).

6. Trash/recycle cabinets (never even heard of them before).

7. Using more drawers then cabinets in bottom cabinets.

8. Fewer upper cabinets.

9. IKEA.
1. Find out what I like instead of just be concerned about resale.
