Bunn Coffee Makers

I need opinions from the wonderful people here. I need a new coffee maker and the only one that I really am drawn too is Bunn. My only concern is the fact that it stays plugged in all the time to keep the water heated. Does anyone here own one and have any comments? Thanks :)

I wish you would have posted this a year ago and I would have sent you the one I had.

I now have a cheap Proctor Silex which I bought at the Family Dollar for $12.98 and it makes coffee exactly the same way the Bunn machine did.

We have had Bunns several times and liked them well enough. The past number of years after retiring, we went to less expensive machines, like Mr Coffee. They last 3-4 years then when they go kapoot, we just buy another one. As for staying plugged in all the time, do you unplug your coffee maker (and other small appliances) when not in use?

Just checked, NASA's refueling the shuttle starting at 6:45 local time for a launch at 4:14 AM. If there would have been a way other than the 'thumb' I would be there. A day late isn't bad. kathyjane, umpty years ago I bought my sweetie one of those home Bunn coffee makers. Wonderful gadget. With my lifetime habit of getting up at Oh-dark-thirty, she had a cuppa to go along with bed-head! Somewhere along the way, maybe 15 years or so ago, the spreader got lost. It's the little doo-dad that threads into the water delivery tube for those w/o a Bunn. I called the company and asked for a replacement, got a very lovely gal (shoot me, I like gals!) who asked for my address. She Federal Expressed a replacement, no charge. I feel guilty. The above was maybe a dozen or so years ago. I was shoveling the good stuff out of a old compost pile and a small brown thing was in it. The spreader. Coffee grounds, all vege stuff, always went into the various compost piles. One of us had an accident! Probably me. I'm good at that type of stuff. Here is a link that might be useful: NASA TV

Forget the bunn. To make the best possible single serving cup of drip style coffee, you need: (1) Fresh beans, with a roast date within the past week when you buy them, and used up within 2 weeks after that. This generally means buying directly from a local roaster or from a supermarket that has a roaster in the store. There are some great mail order roasters, but with shipping this option gets expensive. Unless you are buying your La Columbe direct from the roaster, you can probably do better. Clearly there's something about those beans you like, so try to figure out what that is -- maybe it's the origin of the coffee (Kenya, Sumatra, etc) or maybe it's the roast level (medium, darker, etc). (2) A quality burr grinder. This will cost $80 to $150. Baratza Maestro or Maestro Plus are good choices. Be careful on this -- there are many lower cost models that are called 'burr grinder' but the burrs are low quality and they just don't work as well. If you want, you can spend a week reading advice on coffeegeek.com, but it all comes down to this: the grinder is the single most important piece of coffee making equipment. (3) A simple single cup brewing device. My favorite is also the Aeropress ($25) mentioned by joe blowe. The coffee flavor is similar to French Press but without the sediment. For a more traditional drip flavor, the single cup Swiss Gold filter ($18, see link below) works great. (4) A source of hot water. Stovetop kettle, electic kettle, or microwave oven -- it makes no difference. 200 degrees is the supposed ideal, but I generally just use water that's just boiled -- by the time it mixes with the coffee grounds the temperature will drop to the right level. If you like your coffee HOT, then the only secret is to pre-heat the mug with boiling water before you put the coffee in. Here is a link that might be useful: Single cup Swiss Gold filter

For the reason you mentioned, staying plugged in and on all the time, I would not own a Bunn.

We are test marketing a Keurig and it stays plugged in and coffee is ready in about 15 seconds. Really nice on a cold morning!

I have always owned a Bunn coffeemaker. My siblings bought me one for a wedding present 32 yrs ago. My brother had worked in the restaurant biz and that's what they used. I'm on #4 I think. I have never had a problem with it being plugged in all the time. I'm not a Keurig girl/I'm a pot drinker.

Plugged in all the time ...

... if keeping water warm all the time ...

... in case the owner/(addict?) has an urgent need for a "fix" ...

... is costly, power-wise.

That's also costly, in terms of fuel for the generator, and pollution-wise, plus global warming-wise.

There should be a vacation switch to turn off the Bunn, otherwise I would unplug it. My friend that owns a restaurant has her units on a circuit that she turns on when she gets there and switches off when she is done for the evening.

I don't get the issue with the Keurig taking a few minutes to heat the water, if it is that big a deal buy a model that has a timer on it.

We bought a Bunn about 3 years ago and love it. I can have a full pot of fresh coffee in about 3 minutes. Love, love, love it. Haven't had a lick of trouble.

And, Lynn, ours DOES have a vacation switch. I found out by accident - it's on the side, and I guess I accidentally hit it once. Then when I couldn't get the thing to work, I thought it was broke! But it wasn't - I had just hit the vacation switch. It's on the side nearest the wall, and I just never noticed it before.

Just remember that the Bunn doesn't just stay plugged in, the heating element keeps the water hot all the time so if you are worried about the house burning down or worried about wasting electricity as I am, this wouldn't be the right pot for you. I have heard of these causing a house fire btw! The only small appliance that stays plugged in at my house is the microwave, I unplug everything else when not in use!

This is my second Bunn and I love it.Love to save money on electric but don't mined leaving my bunn on.If you love coffee like me you don't give it a second thought.I save money by buying Walmart 100% columbian coffee ,It's the greatest.I mix my coffee with chicory and enjoy the best coffee ever.You can't take it with you and you should enjoy your life because it is so short.

For us we buy the cheaper ones. I would never have a small appliance that had to be plugged in 24/7. When we lived in CT a friend lost their house because as the fire dept told them the coffee maker shorted & caused them to loose everything. The coffee maker was not on, just plugged in.

Dotmom I unplug everything before I go to work or leave the house. I'd rather not get the phone call saying that my house burned down. Maybe I'll just get a Mr. Coffee and skip the Bunn.

Plugged in all the time. No prob, get an off on toggle plug between Bunn and plug. Works great. Plugged in all the time warped our plastic grounds holder.

Hi Phyllis ... I didn't realize the level of age, until I read my post, which related to a car that I drove to the scrap yard over three years ago.

For three ... four ... (even 6?) cups a day ...

... one feels the nee to be in hot water for the full 24 hours?
