Bunn Coffee Makers

I need opinions from the wonderful people here. I need a new coffee maker and the only one that I really am drawn too is Bunn. My only concern is the fact that it stays plugged in all the time to keep the water heated. Does anyone here own one and have any comments? Thanks :)

I wish you would have posted this a year ago and I would have sent you the one I had.

I now have a cheap Proctor Silex which I bought at the Family Dollar for $12.98 and it makes coffee exactly the same way the Bunn machine did.

We have had Bunns several times and liked them well enough. The past number of years after retiring, we went to less expensive machines, like Mr Coffee. They last 3-4 years then when they go kapoot, we just buy another one. As for staying plugged in all the time, do you unplug your coffee maker (and other small appliances) when not in use?

This is copied from amany's earlier link, this is the desired pH of many houseplants. Neutral pH is 7.0, lower numbers are acid. As you can see almost every single one will tolerate slightly acidic soil and the vast majority prefer it. For example, this list says Hibiscus prefer 6.0-8.0, meaning they like neutral but will tolerate slight acidity. I dump coffee on my hibiscus and they don't complain. We put a hutch in our breakfast room and have similar functions. The base has 2 15" wide 3 drawer bases with 24" fridge drawers in the middle. We started off thinking of a wine cooler or small fridge, and I am so happy we went with the drawers. They did cost more, but it is so easy to get everything in and out and nothing gets lost in the back. You also don''t have to bend or squat then reach back into a box -- the drawers pull out and are kind on your back and neck (I have neck problems, so that was a big deal for me). My kids and my sister love the fact that you can sit at one end of the table and reach back to pull out the top drawer and refill a glass of milk or juice without leaving the table. LOL The drawers on either side of the fridge have a flatware drawer and a drawer for my laptop in the shallow drawers (chargers are up there too). The lower drawers have bread and peanut butter for sandwiches, fruit and snacks for lunches, cereal, coffee and other breakfast items. The top has 2 15" glass front cabinets that house our glasses and stemware. They are connected by open shelves that have mugs on the bottom shelf and cookbooks and display above. The two side cabinets have drawers below them that come down to the counter with 2 small drawers each. Those small drawers hold napkins, medicines and vitamins taken daily or frequently, teas and hot chocolate packets and wine gadgets. The open area in the middle of the counter has our espresso maker and some other beverage service items (straws in an old soda fountain type dispenser, sugar, chocolate shaker for topping hot drinks, etc.) We were limited to the room that we had in an unused doorway, but with the frameless cabinets, even the 15" wide cabinets and shallow drawers on top (15"x15" external size) are very useful and have been one of the things we've really enjoyed about our new kitchen.

Hi Iowa girl (the girl that I married as an Iowa girl - transplanted), Enjoy yiour coffee. Maybe you'd be interested in an agency that is related to the Keurig (don't know whether they own it ... but I think that they provide the coffee). If you might be interested in what their share prices have done in recent years, go to Yahoo.com, click on "Finance", part way down the left side, then in the slot near top left labelled, "Get quotes", write GMCR, for "Green Montain Coffee Roasters". When the list comes up, click on the "GMCR" on the left to get quite a lot of current information. In my story just below, use the instructions to get its price ranges over the last number of years. Maybe if you were to buy some shares ... ... the dividends might pay for your machine (and I hope that it might last until they were to). If you put a comma after those letters in the "Get quotes" box, add a space, then add "SBUX" ... Starbucks' shares were about $9.00, three or four years ago. When you click on the letters "SBUX" in the listing that comes down, you'll get a lot of info re Starbucks, and over on the right is a chart of the price of the stock throughout the latest day's trading. Under that chart is "6 mos", "1 yr" or "5 yr" and if you click on them, it'll show your their price history over those years. Above the middle, near the right, is something like "chart options/choices", and if you click on that, you can find something like "ohlc", and if you click on that you'll find what the opening, high, low and closing prices were of the shares in the various days that are covered in the chart, in green for "up" days and red for "down" days. For the reason you mentioned, staying plugged in and on all the time, I would not own a Bunn.

We are test marketing a Keurig and it stays plugged in and coffee is ready in about 15 seconds. Really nice on a cold morning!

I have always owned a Bunn coffeemaker. My siblings bought me one for a wedding present 32 yrs ago. My brother had worked in the restaurant biz and that's what they used. I'm on #4 I think. I have never had a problem with it being plugged in all the time. I'm not a Keurig girl/I'm a pot drinker.

... if keeping water warm all the time ...

... in case the owner/(addict?) has an urgent need for a "fix" ...

... is costly, power-wise.

That's also costly, in terms of fuel for the generator, and pollution-wise, plus global warming-wise.

There should be a vacation switch to turn off the Bunn, otherwise I would unplug it. My friend that owns a restaurant has her units on a circuit that she turns on when she gets there and switches off when she is done for the evening.

I don't get the issue with the Keurig taking a few minutes to heat the water, if it is that big a deal buy a model that has a timer on it.

We bought a Bunn about 3 years ago and love it. I can have a full pot of fresh coffee in about 3 minutes. Love, love, love it. Haven't had a lick of trouble.

And, Lynn, ours DOES have a vacation switch. I found out by accident - it's on the side, and I guess I accidentally hit it once. Then when I couldn't get the thing to work, I thought it was broke! But it wasn't - I had just hit the vacation switch. It's on the side nearest the wall, and I just never noticed it before.

Just remember that the Bunn doesn't just stay plugged in, the heating element keeps the water hot all the time so if you are worried about the house burning down or worried about wasting electricity as I am, this wouldn't be the right pot for you. I have heard of these causing a house fire btw! The only small appliance that stays plugged in at my house is the microwave, I unplug everything else when not in use!

This is my second Bunn and I love it.Love to save money on electric but don't mined leaving my bunn on.If you love coffee like me you don't give it a second thought.I save money by buying Walmart 100% columbian coffee ,It's the greatest.I mix my coffee with chicory and enjoy the best coffee ever.You can't take it with you and you should enjoy your life because it is so short.

For us we buy the cheaper ones. I would never have a small appliance that had to be plugged in 24/7. When we lived in CT a friend lost their house because as the fire dept told them the coffee maker shorted & caused them to loose everything. The coffee maker was not on, just plugged in.

Dotmom I unplug everything before I go to work or leave the house. I'd rather not get the phone call saying that my house burned down. Maybe I'll just get a Mr. Coffee and skip the Bunn.

Plugged in all the time. No prob, get an off on toggle plug between Bunn and plug. Works great. Plugged in all the time warped our plastic grounds holder.

Hi Phyllis ... I didn't realize the level of age, until I read my post, which related to a car that I drove to the scrap yard over three years ago.

For three ... four ... (even 6?) cups a day ...

... one feels the nee to be in hot water for the full 24 hours?
