Keurig Anyone have one of these?

Keurig is a single cup coffee maker that gets rave reviews. I bought one for the office and *loved* it. I then bought two more Â one for home and one as a gift for my dadÂs upcoming birthday. I raved to my husband about how great this coffee was. Sadly, the coffee at home was awful. The model number was different than the one from work and it didnÂt have the temperature control. I suspected the temperature to be the problem so I went and purchased yet another machine with the temperature control, but this was no better. The only other difference is that we use distilled water at work. So, I purchased the water filter Keurig sells, but that didnÂt help either. My poor husband says he hasnÂt had a decent cup of coffee since I made the switch and I agree. I will try distilled water at home, but I *really* donÂt want to have to buy and store distilled water to have decent coffee each morning.

I was just wondering what your experiences with these machines have been.

We have one at the office and I have one at home - both produce fantastic coffee. I just use regular tap water, but then we have great tap water.

Grannybets Â IÂve read experiences like yours hundreds of times. What the heck is wrong with mine? What size cup do you use? Do you have a favorite coffee??

We use our tap water for our regular drip machine with no problems. IÂm really stumped and worried about giving the other one I have to my Dad. The iRobot gutter cleaner I got him for fatherÂs day was a dud Â so I want his birthday gift to be better! And I really want this machine to work!

I hope others weigh in too.

I am sorry to hear about your brother's vision. Have you talked with the blind association? They came out and helped my parents set things up around their place. Also if your brother is a vet, some VA centers offer a vision program called VISOR. It is almost like a camp to learn how to manage low vision. They also gave my dad lots of helpful aids including a computer with a large screen and a reading device. The computer had software to massively enlarge the orint and read it. Back to coffee I just bought the nespresso virtuline(sp) for my husband for Christmas. You do have to order the pods on-line or from specialty shops. The pods are recycled- they give you a recycle bag. It does have a reservoir Can't tell you much more since we haven't used it other than samples at the store.

Kiwigem and mom2sulu - Thank You!! I love it too. It is Craft-Art DIY Black Walnut. I finished it with Original Waterlox. ci_lantro - that sink is a great find and the website has lots of alternatives. That particular sink is an overmount. Their accessories will work with my Stages, so I'm going to order a colander and chopping board since they will fit perfect and are so inexpensive. As I have learned how best to use my sink, I have found the side platform to be invaluable along with the use of the two flip trays. I use the trays to thaw frozen foods and use the large tray flipped over as a cutting board. It's great that these trays are up, out of the sink, so I am using the two levels at the same time and move them out of the way as needed. I have several small colanders that I also use in the bottom of the sink yet still have a cutting board above it-no wasted space. It is amazing how much prep can be done at the same time. I use the Stages very similar to the Galley concept. Regarding the food processor question, it does not impact usage at all. Cleaning and prepping food prior to chopping and then be able to organize clean up without cross-contamination is the most valuable function of these sinks. I put my food processor to the left of my side platform so the cleaned and prepped food can be placed directly in the processor. Frankly, I've had food processors for more than 30 yrs and while they have their place, I prefer the control that hand chopping gives. With the addition of another colander and cutting board that I will purchase at BAI (ci_lantro's link) I will have the perfect setup for the way I cook. I am 100% satisfied with the excellent functionality of the Stages 45 and feel my $1000 investment is well worth it. Cleaning is such a huge part of cooking and this sink works hard! I'll have to take a picture during cooking and post. For those that do not mind spending the $$$$ for the Galley, I do think it will be highly functional, especially if you do a lot of scratch cooking.

Prep Sink, anyone regret having one, or just never use theirs?

I agree w/Ccoombs, Holligator, Gellchom, Sweeby, and others. A prep sink is not a "big kitchen" item or a "must have". It depends on location and how you use your kitchen...and not necessarily how many people are cooking at once. You say you're the only cook...will that remain so forever? Do you have children that will eventually learn to cook & work in the kitchen with you at the same time? Does cleanup go on at the same time as meal prep? If... You are the only cook & always will be, Cleaning up (by someone else) is never done while prepping and cooking is going on, No one ever needs to use the kitchen for anything else while you're prepping/cooking or cleaning up, ...and... You have sufficient space b/w the sink & range/cooktop to prep (at least 36" is recommended by the NKBA) then most likely one sink will be enough for you. Our kitchen is medium sized (main/work area is approx 14.5' x 10.5'). Both my DH & I work outside the home, so work in the kitchen only happens in the evening and making dinner often coincides with cleanup of breakfast dishes & after school snacks, as well as, sometimes, the previous night's dishes. My DH cleans up while I prep/cook. In our old L-shaped kitchen, we had a double-bowl sink w/24" b/w the sink & range. We were constantly competing for the sink...just b/c you have a double-bowl (which we did) does not guarantee two can work at the sink at the same time. You have to share the faucet as well as the floor space in front of the sink. (The 24" b/w them was also definitely an issue b/c there was not enough room for me to work as well as have ingredients and/or small appliances out at the same time...I was constantly shuffling things around.) When we redesigned our kitchen as a modified galley (short peninsula legs off one side of galley), we placed the Prep & Cooking Zones on one wall & the Cleanup Zone on the other wall. To make it work ideally, this required the addition of a prep sink on the Prep/Cooking wall. This separation of Cleanup from Prep/Cooking and the addition of the prep sink is the best thing we did in our kitchen to improve its functionality...and to improve our kitchen working relationship! Now that my children are also helping, I went from a one-cook kitchen to a two- or three-cook kitchen...still w/the addition of someone cleaning up at the same time. Sometimes all four of us are working in the kitchen at once! So, how is your kitchen used, not just for cooking, but for everything else? What about the future?

I have one that my daughter gave me for Christmas last year. The coffee is good, but after I used all of the little things of coffee that came with it, I just bought some Folgers coffee and use that. Mine came with a little mesh basket insert so loose coffee can be used. I already had a Bunn coffee maker, and I find that I still end up using it often. It is actually faster than the Kuerig.

I just bought a Keurig for the office, I am so tired of wasting coffee! We make a pot and then we drink each drink a cup and the rest goes to waste! So even at the cost of the coffee I think it is cheaper.

I have no answer for you about the difference in taste, it makes no sense to me. I hope you find the reason and that hubby's gift is a success!

I think I hit the wrong button this morning because my cup was not as full as normal. But the coffee sure tasted good! Unfortunately, I would need to use 2 k-cups to fill my cup this way. Maybe I just need to find some *really* strong coffee for this to work with my home waterÂ

Can it make a 20 oz. cup ? That's the size cup I use for my one cup in the morning.

I always use the strongest, dark roast that I can find. At the office we use Van Houtte Midnight Express, but at home I use Tully's French Roast from Costco. My machine has 4 cup sizes to choose from and I use the second largest.

Hi Monica,

Does one need both hands to lift that mug?

Daughter gave me one with "A-R-I-Z-O-N-A" on it in large letters that go all around the large mug, a "leftie" like her getting to see the "A-r-i-" and a "rightie" like me getting to see only the dregs of the word, "-o-n-a": don't ask me the number of ounces of its capacity but it's about half as much again as an average sized mug. Such mugs need to be microwaveable!

I'm a bit concerned about using it for coffee too often, for fear that it might make me squirrelly. Probably one of those unnecessary worries to which we sometimes subject ourselves.

I hope that this week is bringing good things with it for you.

I doubt that you use distilled water at work, but probably spring water.

Distilled water, which has no minerals in it at all, makes AWFUL coffee, about as bad as coffee made with very hard water.
