Do you attach the deer whistles to the tires? I see deer almost every day driving into town. Also see them in our yard. I see that we are in the same time zone. Gayle, where are you?

Do they really work? I am sure I read a study a while ago saying they did not work. Around here people used to use them because of moose on the highway (we don't have deer here). I'd say it was 20 years ago that they were a real fad, now I never see them. I remember my father made me put them on my car when I got my first job and I was driving 4 hours on the highway to come home on weekends. I ripped them off after I left and told him the fell off. LOL

Just found this article after a quick search and they say there is no evidence that they work. I am sure there are many studies and articles out there.

Nope we don't have them on either vehicle. I never have. I heard they don't help too. You have to stay alert and always watch for them up here. They are awful thick. One day driving 45 miles to the next town we counted 7 or 8 dead ones too. I've never hit one, DH hasn't either and would kill me if I did. LOL I hate driving at dusk, dawn and nighttime when they are out.
There is a family that feeds deer living alongside a busy highway that has gotten a lot of heat from the State. The deer FLOCK to his farm and being right along the road there is a huge number of car/deer accidents. I have seen herds of them in the guys back yard!! Like I am sure 50-100 at a time.

Our deer are too "tame", nothing scares them. Courtesy of the neighbors hand feeding them, you can blast a boat whistle at them to try and get them out of the yard, and they just look at you. They are like BIG stupid dogs..destructive dogs but dogs.. So I don't bother with putting the air alarm on the bumper.

I'm in a very small rural community southwest of Houston. I am surrounded by 2 Ranches with a bunch of acreage.

I know Montana is putting up siren alerts along their freeway, or so I heard on the news. It is surpose to keep all the critters off of the Freeway.

Who knows if they work or don't work. I'm not a Deer.

whidbeykathy, I know what you mean. Around here you can practically walk up and pet the Deer.

My DH had them on a car about 20 years ago - They got broke off when he hit a deer....

They are terrible, and no matter how hard you watch for them - you just can't see them sometimes.

We actually had one run into US one time. It hit the side of the car.

I have heard about that too Iagirl! My DS and DBIL many years ago were on a country highway on motorcycle. A deer ran out of some tall weeds in the ditch and right into them!
The both escaped with just some bad bruises down their sides. Sister also had it happen in the car just a month ago!

Guess I'm fortunate, that we don't often see deer here in the suburbs--although it's not completely unheard of for one to wander through the residential streets every 5 years or so.

My brother has had a couple of unpleasant run-in's with deer, living as he does in a more rural area.

One of the scariest driving things that ever happened to us, I'd say, was one day we were driving out in the country, there was a field next to us. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a deer heading straight toward us. Had he gone through (or over--do they jump?) the wire fence, he'd have definitely crashed into my side of the car. There was nothing we really could do--I saw the deer at the last second, as he approached the road. Miraculously, he made a sharp right, and ran alongside of us for a few seconds, before we outdistanced him. We were safe, so was he--but boy was my heart racing!

Oh, no--no deer whistles on our car. Probably won't get them now--but something to remember if we retire to a less congested, more rural area in a few years.

Out here people were putting them on their motorcycles. The only problem is that we have open range and when there are cattle present they tend to run right for the bikes not away. The deer when we see them will usually run away from the sound. Needless to say people in our group don't use them.

My DH doesn't hunt but he has killed more deer via auto than most people have out hunting in the woods, three or four that I know about. I've hit a couple, thank goodness no injuries to us, just the vehicles any of those times.

We pretty well know the areas that they frequent crossing the roads and are on the lookout very carefully in those areas.

Deer are a very real danger. My mother lives in a rural part of Western New York State. Just about a mile frome her, a girl was killed. She was driving at night and was startled by a deer junping across the road. She went off the road and crashed and died. Very sad. I have seen a few deer when visiting. They come right up to my Mom's house and eat her bushes. She saw a deer lying down sleeping in her back yard one night. I know a woman who does a lot of driving and has had two crashes with deer. Fortunately,she hasn't been hurt but her cars had serious damage.

Even if the deer were alerted by the whistles that doesn't mean they will avoid you. Our driveway at our mountain place is over 1/2 mile long. The silly deer will stand by the side of the driveway and you never know if they'll decide to bolt through the woods away from you or think it's just a wonderful idea to run right into you. We've even stopped the car and waited for them to make up their minds and once one of them opted to scamper towards our car and then veer away at the last minute as we were frantically trying to throw the gear shift into reverse and back up. I do believe that for the most part they are clueless.

I hit a deer when I was younger, but I have had lots of near misses.

My Dad told me if an animal gets in your way, brake, but do not swerve. Of course, the startle reflex is to brake and turn the wheel in the opposite direction. Which can put you in a tail spin.

I have them on the van,have had for 7 years,and my other vehicles as well.
Have driven in deer country now for years,and wouldnt be without them....when I see that the deers ears are flopping back and forth from the "invisible" sound,I "know" that they are working

They just did a special on TV yesterday about putting up special whistles I think in MT. It make a real strange noise, not a solid sound, but a variable one, along with a single wire fence, and the state trooper reported not a single hit since they were installed. Wish I could remember where. Here is ND we watch the tree rows, sun flower fields, ditches etc. But then the mountain lions seem to be getting a few etc.
We have a state law that if you hit one, the accident cannot be counted against you. Ins, companies don't like it but--oh well!

Mine too was broken off when I hit a deer. I think it may startle them, just as headlights do, which causes them to just stop and hesitate, pondering how they should react.
