Mini split line set question

I need to install a line set from an outdoor unit to indoor units (R410A refrigerant will be used). I found ready-to-install line sets sold online (3/8" and 5/8"). These line sets seem to come in lengths of 25' and 50' and there are already flared ends on them. They are also insulated. The problem is that these are not optimal lengths for my application. They are also expensive. I wonder whether the following is acceptable: Use a refrigeration coil, cut in length, flare the ends, and then insulate with rubber, self-adhesive insulation. I think I can use regular refrigeration coils (ACR copper coils).

Is there anything about these ready line sets that justify the use of them vs preparing your own ? (except being faster to install)

Some will argue the ready mades are cleaner but I say that depends on how well the tech takes care of his coils. Some say the unit is precharged with exact amount of R410 nessary for the ready made linght but how can that be true if various lengihts are available? No way I will pay what they want for premade sets. Besides,who wants the excess taking room in the attic?

It appears I forgot I had asked this question here so I am just now coming back to it. Anyway, nothing in the manual about programming. I have called Goodman and they will not provide any tech support or troubleshooting to a homeowner. My installer who admitted he does not have much experience with the mini splits, says Goodman told him the circuit board is bad and the entire unit must be replaced which seems ludicrous. Any other ideas?

Do you have a basement so condensate can run down? I have no experience with pumps to push it up, but that should work. If possible, I'd install the drains through a closet or something by placing them near the closets. That way you can get to them in case there is a clog or leak. You might consider covering several areas with the small, flat AHUs that connect to short ducts. I do have some advice for how to combine indoor and outdoor parts. Smaller systems are convenient in the case of a power outage because you can run parts of it with a smaller backup genset. In addition to that, group indoor units that will be running at times with low demand, low output, together. That way the outdoor unit driving them can modulate better rather than toggling on and off. i don't know why refrigerant lines in the attic would be a problem, but keep them as short as practical.

Thanks all, it did seem pretty outrageous to us too but had no baseline to go from so weren’t sure. We are in central CT, so not a low COL but not so high that this doesn’t make us blink. We are definitely getting other estimates. We have been using a portable unit from our old house to keep us cool, it just seems to defeat the purpose of having a central system. We moved in in the winter and the heat seemed to be adequate up there (and it is), the cooling power just isnt there on hot summer nights. The reason the cost of improving or changing the duct work is so high is because a lot of it is asbestos wrapped - so the high environmental/hazardous material disposal fees factor in and drive up the cost. The bedroom is at the end of the run on the opposite side of the house on the second floor, so the recurring theme has been that it’s probably not worth it. We did think about possibly DIY with the Mitsubishi but figured we would get some prices and go from there, thinking that if we had a pro install we had some kind of protection/warranty in case something failed. We do have someone else coming out and deoending on their estimate, will probably reconsider DIY or just deal with the window or portable unit for awhile longer - or forever. Most HVAC manuals only give generic information. The manufacturer's expect you to know what you are doing. If you don't know what you're doing... you're in the ocean without a life vest on. If the manufacturer sold you the unit, call them or call the people who sold it to you. At some point this kind of nonsense will stop. (Stick to doing what you know, leave the pro things to the pros.) I know it matters not one bit what I post on things of this nature. So I don't even know why I even post about it any more.

You can certainly make your own line sets. I would only do it with new clean tubing. I always cut the factory made flares off anyway. You do not say how long your line set is going to be. I guess I'd try pricing at every supply house in town to see who will give you the best price. You will want a set of spring benders to form the tubing. Soft copper work hardens in a hurry and at the worst possible spot(s). Also, be careful with the insulation. If it is not well done and covers completely you can end up with sweating lines that drip and can make a heck of a mess over time. Read that, MOLD.

While I understand the desire to save money on your install, I will say that you want to do this install once. Mini-splits are really reliable when installed properly. but they can be a bear when something in the install isn't right.

Make sure you use exactly the line sets diameter specified by the manuf. Manuf are very particular about that spec.

Thanks, Jackfre. I will use new ACR tubing (1/4", 3/8", and 5/8"). Some sections need to be 5/8" & 3/8", some sections are 3/8" & 1/4".

There are various lengths from outdoor unit to branch box and branch box to indoor air handlers. (For example: 17', 20', 40', 19' etc.)

You were very helpful earlier and answered one of my questions about Fujitsu HFI mini split system with AOU48RLXFZ. This question is also related to the same system.

I cannot find a rubber insulation for 1/4" OD tube, the smallest size insulation I can find is 3/8" OD (Armaflex brand). Can I use 3/8 insulation for 1/4" tube ?

Thanks for warning about the seating risk if insulation is not done correctly. How do you connect two 6ft length insulations? Do you use a special glue at the joint, or using an line set tape is enough?
