Heat Pump Suggestions -NC Mountains

Two homes in my subdivision are currently in need of replacement heat pumps.

We bought our home last year , had inspections, and was told the Trane heat pump should last a couple more years.

It's really old, from the 1980s. I've noticed ice build up inside the metal sides of the heat pump in the past few days. So far we have not had an excessively high heating bill. Last month's was $ 202 for heat and electric for a 2000 sq foot one floor home.

Another home in the subdivision has a 10 year old Trane heat pump. The neighbor complained about excessive costs from Duke Energy ( $ 360 last month) so I told her I would look around. When I saw her heat pump, it looked like a skating rink! Not only was the ice thick outside of it, but inside as well. She phoned a Trane serviceman who told her it would need a new board plus it could need other parts.

Both of us think a new heat pump would be the best solution.

After looking on line for suggestions, and hoping there was a Consumers Report, I found almost nothing but complaints about most brands. I also searched this forum for heat pump information but our climate was not the same.

The winter here is the coldest in 35 years!

So much for a milder winter when moving south.

Thank you for your advice and suggestions.

We would like a reliable heat/ AC system, with a decent warranty .
