My hospital bean counters must be stupid....

Last April I woke up in the intensive care unit at the hospital and I did not have a clue as to why or how I got there. Finally Jan came in and told me that I had laid down on the bed on Friday afternoon and my breathing seemed very labored. When I still had not gotten up by 7pm Saturday she called 911 and the EMT's insisted that they take me into the hospital. At the hospital they put me in intensive care, where I stayed for another two days before I really woke up enough to know what was going on.

The doctors told me that it was a result of two problems. 1, I have COPD and did not have any home oxygen at the time, and 2, they discovered I have sleep apnea, where I actually stop breathing for prolonged periods when asleep.

The doctor said that at the time I was admitted my blood oxygen level was down to 57%, which is the lowest he had ever seen in his 24yr career. He further said that he had never known anyone to live with a blood oxygen level below 65%. To further complicate it, my blood was saturated with Carbon dioxide so they had me on special respiratory therapy. Five days later I was discharged from the hospital and they set it up for me to have an oxygen concentrator machine at home and portable tanks that I can refill with the machine and carry with me when I go out.

A week after I was discharged I got a bill from the hospital that said all services had been paid by my Massachusetts Health Insurance and I had no copay, which surprised the hell out of me, but you can be sure I was thankful.

Now here is the kicker....In October I received a statement from the hospital telling me that my insurance had refused to pay for some of the lab tests & procedures so it was now my responsibilty to pay those. I called the hospital and asked what tests and proceedures they were talking about? So they sent me another statement with full disclosure of what the services in question were?

Two days later I got that list and I reviewed it...Then I broke out in histerical laughter for about ten minutes, then I picked up my phone, called the hospital billing office and told them "after a thorough review of their billing, I am in complete agreement with my insurance company,,,I am not going to pay one damn red cent, and if you people make any effort to carry this to collections I will be forced to respond with a law suite for fraud and demand a complete state audit of your billing services", and I hung up without awaiting their response.

Why you ask? If you could see the bill you would agree, even Ray Charles could see it.....LOL

The first name on the billing is "Richard"

The bill is a bit over $500 for a "pregnancy test" and a "Gyno Pelvic Exam"

Now, whats wrong with that picture?
