re: leaking condensate drain

My AC exchanger is located above the living room ceiling. It has both clogged and disconnected at a pvc joint. What are the backup options for holding the water in the event of a drainage failure. Fortunately the plaster has held but I obviously do not want any more incidents.

you should have 2 drains, 1 main that always drains and the 2nd is the backup for in case the main gets clogged. this should ONLY drain if the main is not functioning. the main drain comes off the handler housing itself, while the backup comes off teh pan under the housing.

you need to clear the clog and reglue the joint.

I am assuming there is no auxiliary pan under your evaporator.
A local hvac supply house should have a pan that will fit your application you can either place the pan under the coil and drain it independently or incorporate a float switch and break the control circuit going to your ac in the event of a drain failure

My strongest suspecion is that drains are improperly trapped and/or very short before opened to daylight. In addition to traps on lines,some arrangements must not have an open tee on lines. If you see an inverted T in the lines,temporarly plug the opening to see if that cures or improve's leak. The inclosure must be reasonably air tite which can be helped with foil tape. As air flows through handler,which does it pass through first,secound and third ,blower ,filter, evap coil? Was blower,coil and strip heaters replaced as a unit or was part of old handler retained? If this turns out to be the problem a baffle can be installed on condensate pan as last resort. By rook or crook,you must have a filter or things will just get worse.

If the problem is low PH, the other question is whether this is well or city water, and what type of copper pipes are installed in the house. Usually heavier duty pipes (I believe they're called L tubing) are installed in houses with wells, to help handle less than optimal water conditions. My house was built in 1960 and I bought it in 1990. The PH of the raw water is 6.7 and the only clue that the water was acidic was that a sink had turned blue from a dripping faucet. I had a calcite filter installed (which neutralizes the acidity), and a plumber told me not to worry about the pipes, as they were designed to handle this type of water. So my pipes went 30 years with slightly acidic water, and I haven't had a problem in the last 25 years. I just received a quote to add another calcite filter to my house for $1,650. They work well but make the water a bit harder. Your first step should be to get a water test done.

Funny, in our old house the AC condensate ran to the sump. But here it seems to run to a drain in the floor, that leads to the pipe everything else drains to (I know, because it backed up once...)

Right. You need an auxiliary drain pan. The secondary drain on the heater just comes from the same internal pan and is meant to be rerouted to the secondary drain ie a pan. the you also need the 3/4 inch PVC pipe and fittings to run the overflow into an acceptable source. This may differ depending on your local codes.
