Crack them into a bowl. If they look too funky, or smell funky, toss them.

Put one in a bowl of cool water twice as deep as the egg, if the egg floats or even tries by standing up straight it's no good. Eggs build up gases when they go bad [the sulphur stink of rotten eggs - remember mischief night?] so the water test will tell.

Still that's a long time - I wouldn't feel safe but that's me. Dang woman doncha have a 7/11?? lol.

Put them in a deep bowl of water. If they float, they are bad; if they sink they are still good.

Yes, crack it open and smell it. Personally? I'd throw it out and run up to the store and buy fresh ones. I'm funny about stuff like expired foods etc.

LOL...we do have a grocery store nearby and I'm going to get another dozen eggs. Need to get tomato sauce anyhow as I'm out of that and I do use it in my meatloaf. We're not that crazy over eggs. Once a month I might eat scrambled eggs, but the only other time I use them is for making meatloaf. I know there are some grocery stores where you can buy a half dozen eggs, but not at our little IGA store. You have to buy they whole dozen!!

I'd do the water test, then if good, scramble them for the dog or cat:)

You can do the water test like Lars and Sands said.
If they stand on end , they are getting there,

The air pocket on the large end grows.
If they smell good I use them.

I also keep some powdered eggs handy for different things.

I use the water test a lot. It seems like my grocery runs a BOGO sale on the 18 count cartons about every 6 weeks. I NEVER go through 36 eggs in a month and a half and I am always checking when I get towards the end of the 6 weeks.

When in doubt, throw them out!

Thanks all for your input. I did get rid of the eggs. I had already cracked both of them, so it was too late for the water test. At least now I know how to check them next time!! Neither egg smelled, but I will say the whites were a little cloudy. That along with the past expiration date made me think they were no good.

Cloudy whites really isn't an indication of spoliage.

When eggs start to go bad, many weeks after the posted expiration date, the whites get a sort of fluoro green glow.

Eggs are good AT LEAST 2-3 weeks past the expiration date as long as they've been refrigerated the entire time. They don't present any additional health risk. As LindaC said, they're cooked anyway.

Older eggs are better hard-cooked, not so great for meringues.

I agree, Carol, eggs are good for at least 2 or 3 weeks past the expiration date and probably longer. I'd have used them without hesitation.

Annie, I'll bet you know the odds of one of those sulphurous eggs is greatest with free-range hens who have a habit of hiding their "treasures." ;)

Umm....yes, I do, having personally experienced that. (grin) Fortunately, these "girls" use their nest boxes in most instances, and don't make me go hunting too often.

Lou, my eggs never have expiration dates, they don't last that long. If I've had them for more than a couple of weeks, I'll either make quiche or a custard pie, or I'll beat them up and put them in the freezer, two per container, for baking later.
