rug backing disintegrating/oriental area rug - what to do?

I bought 2 different 5 X 7 oriental (wool) area rugs at one of the large discount stores and in both cases, the backing on the rugs has been disintegrating into a fine white powder found under the rugs each time I lift them. Perhaps this has something to do with the quality, given where I purchased them (otherwise, appearance perfect) - I don't know - but I want to do what I can to stop it.

Does anyone know or have suggestions about what I might do to stop - fix - or address this - so it stops happening? I tried heavily spraying starch (used for ironing) on the back of one - but it did nothing. I'm thinking about spraying white latex paint on the backs (probably sounds - and is desperate - but maybe it would work..?).

Any information or leads to deal with this would be most appreciated (I hope I'm in an appropriate forum to ask this).

GO TO HOME DEPOT AND BUY INDOOR/OUTDOOR CARPET GLUE AND GLUE A PIECE OF TERRY CLOTH OR DENIM TO THE BACK OF THE RUG. PUT THE GLUE ON THE FABRIC AND THEN APPLY FABRIC TO RUG

Have you tried this with success? Will it loosen if I shampoo the rug?

I've never had any problem with tile but would not use on wood. I moved into a house once where the finish on the wood floor in front of the sink had been damaged by a rug. I currently have some rubber backed rugs on the vinyl flooring in my laundry/back entry but it's not a color that you'd ever notice discoloring plus it will always have some kind of rug there. I always get the thicker area rug type rugs that have the woven back for places that I don't want rubber backing. I don't care for the thinner rugs with no backing because they don't stay flat and are a tripping hazard. I get a color that doesn't show every little thing and get them professionally cleaned once in a while.

Val: I know this was a very hard decision for you. Bravo to you for giving it a try despite all the drama involved. :) It took us a long time to find most of our rugs. Some we loved to death and had a hard time talking ourselves out of because of one reason or another. When we did find the right ones, it was like it was meant to be... right color, size, condition, etc..... We were able to bring them home, put them down and just stop thinking about whether they were right or wrong because they were perfect for us in every way. There was never any second guessing. I know there are rugs out there just waiting for you to find them. Don't exhaust yourselves trying to find one w/in a set time frame. Shop when you have the time and the energy. It may take months, or it may just take days... but please take your time and enjoy the journey. One more thing. Some dealers may seam snooty, and some may even BE snooty... but the good ones know their stuff and want you to be happy w/ your rug. Some will want to educate you and some won't want to bother. Never tell a dealer what your budget is as some will never show you any less than your upper range. If pressed, just say that you must keep it under $xxx, which should be less than you really are willing to spend. I look forward to seeing your future finds!

First I would like to thank suero, parma42 and especially organic smallhouse for responding to my questions. I have finally chosen this rug that organic smallhouse suggested. I am going to do a "Try It Out for Thirty Days" to see if I can live with the print. Sounds like marble dust used as a filler, in the latex bonding agent, holding the secondary backing, to the primary backing.

I would buy a quart of SBT carpet latex, not the acrylic latex. Get a 6" wide putty knife and a paint brush.

Flip the carpet over so the backing is up.

Use the paint brush to apply the latex to the backing, and used the putty knife to drag it smooth, and getting it to lay flat.

Let it cure out and off gas, for a day or two.

I have done this to many wall to wall stretched in installations, where the backing has delaminated in traffic areas, that caused wrinkles.

If it is real wool, Shampooing it will cause it to shrink, like a wool sweater does. But with that said, the SBT latex will not loosen, if you clean the rug.

Floorguy - thank you - - but I Googled 'SBT carpet latex' and can't find much on it or where to purchase it. When you say 'cure out and off gas' - I assume that when the product is applied it needs ventilation while/until it dries.
