Pic of my horseraddish

I did take a picture of my horseraddish after it was finished. Sorry, no pics of the process! I have enough trouble getting things made, let alone taking pictures in the process or plating for pictures. I am doing good to get it made and on the table!

This is two roots worth.

As were ours when we made it! The sun was shining, glaring off of the snow thru the windows of the sun porch, adding to the fumes to make the eyes burn. OH MY! But DH now has enough, I hope, to last him until fall. I use at least 1 1/2 t. in his salad dressing every week, plus whatever he and DS eats when they remember it's in the frige.

I am so happy to see your pictures again! I was here back then, but mostly lurking, which I still do a lot because I am not very good about id-ing my plants since the dogs destroyed my labels and I gave up There are a few I know the names of, but not too many. You were one of my secret mentors when I started my hosta planting! I am sorry your 'When I Dream' was a disappointment, but there is so much to love about your gardens! Thank you for that!!!

Guten Morgen, Bennie. I agree with Moccasin, Jon and all the others... your hostas are beautifully grown... sehr schoene Pflanzen. I envy your Blue Umbrellas, mine doesn't look as blue or tall, having been planted in 2007... darn those tree roots. Your Autumn Frost as well is taller than mine, which is still hugging the ground in its third year. Ich muss auch sagen, dass Ihr Englisch ausgezeichnet ist. Wir lieben Ihre Bilder hier und hoffen, dass Sie oefter zurueckkommen. My German is rusty, I used a dictionnary and compensated with an "e" because my keyboard has no umlaut. Auf Wiedersehn! Just saying,Bennie, we appreciate your effort and hope you come back often with more pictures of your beautiful hostas.

At the restaurant, one of our popular methods of serving firm, white fish such as Cod or Pacific Red Snapper was to dip it in flour & egg wash and then coat it with Panko crumbs to which shredded, fresh horseradish root was added. The cooking left the flavor without the harsh bite. This was then topped with a bit of sour cream horseradish sauce. The chefs used to grate it and keep it in a plastic bag for use. Once, on a slow, boring night when boys will be boys trying to entertain themselves, a couple of the chefs opened the bag and told one of the waiters to, "here, smell this!" He bent over, took a big sniff, and fell down on the floor unconscious, like he'd been hit over the head with a brick. Once we'd woken him and made sure he was o.k., the guys were treated to a tongue lashing I doubt they suspected me of being able to produce. I love horseradish, but have been quite wary when I grate it ever since!

Karen, I'm sorry it took me so long to get back to this. I'm still recovering from our month on the road! We do what you do. Since I am allergic to garlic, this is my DH's substitute. He is Polish on his mother's side, grandparents came from Poland, so he grew up on it. He'll put it on or in a lot of what he eats. We've even had it in mashed potatoes. I don't like it, so I don't eat it. DS started putting it in deviled eggs. I also make DH's salad dressing. It's a honey mustard that I got somewhere on line, and I add horseraddish to that. Honey Mustard Salad Dressing 1/4 c cider vinegar 1/2 c oil 1 1/2 T. mustard 1 1/2 T. honey 1 t. oregano 1 T. Parmesan cheese I add about 1 heaping teasp. horseraddish to it. No horseraddish recipes from the street fair tho. Sorry. We went to see my Aunt on Sunday. There wasn't any of Grandpa's old plants to be found. It would have been nice to have, but that's the way it goes. Tami

I was so excited when I read your post about making the horseradish. I told DH we should try it. He looked at me like I'd lost the last of my senses. Seems he had to grate (with a hand grater) horseradish roots when he was a kid. Must've been bad because he's never forgotten it.

It looks soooo good, Tami. Thanks for showing the picture.

OOOH nothing is better than homemade horseradish. Looks great Tami.

Horseradish is the only condiment that I really really love.

Patti, it's called a food processor! OUTSIDE! Well, we did ours on the sunporch, but the windows and door don't fit very well, so it's pretty ventilated, but it was still pretty bad!

I'll never forget my introduction to fresh horseradish....

the Lancaster Farmer's Market, 1970 something, aisle after aisle of beautifully ripe, washed vegetables, jar after jar of jewel-like pickles, beets, peaches and other canned goodies, rack after rack of shoo-fly pies, doughnuts, cookies, breads, and other baked goods....OMG what is that? A big bowl piled high with freshly grated horseradish and a large fan behind it aimed right at the passerby....me! It got your attention that's for sure! LOL!

LOL, Teresa, that sure would get my attention!

Like Ann T, I love horseradish, I have some growing but haven't managed to harvest big enough roots to do anything with them.

Tami, that looks absolutely and perfectly delicious, I can just taste it on a roast beef and swiss on rye, yum.

good job with the picture too!
