no glue, no click lock, no nail engineered floor?

Greetings, guys.

We are in process of replacing our carpet floor with engineered floor. We are looking at a local floor factory outlet. They have some good floors and we like them. The problem is that they are not click lock. The sale lady said they can be floating, no glue needed. She said all their office are dong this way. I checked their website, the site says that one needs to glue the groove and tongue together.

I am just wondering if you guys have seen this, regular groove and tongue that does not need to glue or nail down. Is it even possible to do it? Is it a new approach or the lady is wrong?

How the heck would it stay together?

If the web site says it needs to be glued, then that is your answer.

Disclaimer: IÂm just a happy home owner looking to do the same as you, so I will be watching to see what others say, but my money in on: "Sales Lady is full of Hooey". :-)

I'd be a little cautious about the advice. Not every engineered floor can be floated. You need a different tongue and groove system so I'd stick with a click system or one designed to be floated.

1. Not all the floating engineered wood floors are made equal. Total thickness and wear layer(top hardwood part)make huge difference on the performance of your installed floor. To me, 1/2" or thicker 3 ply floating wood floors are still the better built than many floating wood floors on the market. I don't believe 3/8" floating click loc floor can ever be a good floor. It is too light weight and weak loc mechnism. 2.Your floating wood floors are only as good as your leveled subfloor. Hollow sounds and noises are mostly from low spots on your subfloor. 3. A good 1/8" accoustical underlayment like cork or Floor Muffler will improve your floating wood floors performance. 4. The bigger area your floating floor covers, the thicker and heavier floor it requres. Stay away from 5/16" floating floors. Nobody can install a sastisfactory floor with it.

Although not in any way 'necessary' due to the self-interlocking nature of the click system. (In fact that was why it was developed) However, there is absolutely no reason I can ascertain why the click systems can't also be nailed or glued down to the substrate if desired just like an engineered T+G system if one likes the totally solid feel underfoot. Solid wood flooring is nailed or glued down to try to limit its thermal movement. Engineered flooring is in fact cross plyed layers of wood anyway which are all glued to each other to enhance stability. So fixing it again down to the substrate rather than installing in a floating way would have no adverse effects. It would be in no way any messier (as suggested by user floorguy) than any other system ! It is all in the skill of the installer. Not all DIYers are hacks after all. Infact they can do a better/neater job than a pro as they are not conscience of the time to finish and move on to the next job. Hello, I am about to begin a wood floor installation project around my house. Ours is a concrete slab foundation (in Bay Area California). Our contractor has been recommending to us to use a Click-And-Lock type floating wood product. We are interested in getting recommendations for a reasonably priced, engineered wood flooring product with click and lock installation. I was wondering if any of you have used it and have recommendation of a brand/selection that offers this type of product. Our previous choice was Garrison Collection and they do not offer click-and-lock installation therefore we are back to our material selection process. Thanks in advance, and suggestions welcome.

Buy a box, lay it down (clicked together in a big square)in an area where you will be installing it, and then walk on it and see if you are okay with the noise. What sounds "okay" to one person might be really annoying to someone else. This is the easiest way to put that question to rest. It's worth the $$ for one box to answer that question before you spend alot on a whole floor, because you don't want to find out after you have spent $XXXX's that the noise bugs you.

Some of the Teragren bamboo products can be floated. They look very nice to me. I have not used them, only because I need something impervious to sitting liquids.

Before glueless floating wood floors, you had to use a PVA type II adhesive, on the tongue or in the groove, and the use of strap clamps to compress, for a tight fit.

Properly milled flooring capable of gluing t&G are still made.

Not all engineered can be floated. Some have to sloppy of a T&G to do so. Those are usually gluedown only.

While floor shopping today I was shown an engineered wood (14 mm) from Ultra Clic which uses no glue...I need to research more.
