Don't give milk to a sick kid with tummy or digestive track problems. Hope he is over the worst of it.

No milk, but ginger ale. The carbonation is soothing, and the ginger settles the stomach (also for motion sickness.)

Agree, no milk. We always kept Coke Syrup on hand for vomiting. Got it at any phramacy, no prescription needed. Small amount at regular intervals (like tsp every half hr.,pharmacy can tell you) and after 2-3 doses vomiting stops. Hope this helps and he's feeling better.

Bella got so sick when she was 1 year old and wouldn't stop vomiting. It was just a really bad bug and we had to go to the ER. Every year around season change, she'd get so darned sick! By the time Luca was born, I'd had LOTS of experience with barfing, LOL. :) I've also cleaned out icky carseats and poopy cribs- many hugs to you for that! The last bad bug we had, we ALL had it and I was pregnant with the twins we lost. My grandfather (who we knew was sick) died the night Anthony, the kids and I were all fighting over the two bathrooms for troubles at both ends of the body, LOL. I was compelled to drive the 20 minutes to help my Nana and Uncle with my grampa's body, all the while gagging, body cramping and tummy aches. Urg.

Luckily Luca isn't as bad as Bella was, but now we have an official "Barf Bucket" in the house because when she does get sick, I can predict every move, every look, every moan she makes, LOL! I've learned that ANYthing in the stomach after a barfing, even water, triggers another attack. And the BRAT diet works GREAT for us! (Bananas, Rice, Applesauce and Toast) Hopefully Grant drinks the Pedialyte- mine only drink Gatorade.

Hang in there, Steph! At some point you've just got to throw your head back, your hands up and start laughing maniacally! : D I know I would! ROTFL!

Steph...my grandson Brad puked all the time...my daughter never when anywhere without a bucket. She could tell by the look in his eyes and would pass him the bucket.

He hated it too...I always felt so sorry for him.

He is 9 yrs old and he still gags easy and pukes.

I know that's not what Grant is doing...But boy do I understand.

That's when I made beds on the floor so I could lay next to them and know when they started fussing in their sleep. I never wanted my babies to puke in bed and sleep in it.

I'm not suggesting you should do that...lol...you are not shaped right at this time to fit on the floor..

The flu is really going around and seems to be lasting just 24 hours...so hoping he'll be better tomorrow.

OH boy I remember those days. The first time my son got that sick I was pregnant too. You've sure brought back a memory for me. It makes my heart ache all over again remembering how scared and upset my little boy was.
Neither one of my boys liked to drink Pedialyte, so I would make pedialyte popsicles and jello using Pedialyte instead of the cold water. I don't agree with giving kids Gatorade (No offense Haley) it's designed for athletes not children. I strongly agree with that BRAT diet. That gets used by the adults and the kids in my house.

I work at a Montessori school and have ages Infants- 3/6 yr. olds. The stomach bug has 'cleaned house'. It is rampant! We can't seem to get rid of it because parents keep bringing their children in when their sick. We try our best to send them home but by then, it's too late. I've been living with Lyson and bleach water for about 2 wks. now! It's not easy. Yes, keep the dairy away from a stomach bug. It'll get better...

Pattico, about your grandson, Brad. Did (or does) he vomit once at a time (maybe a couple or a few times a day) or does he vomit repeately (every few minutes) for days (maybe 1 to 5 days) at a time?

If he does so repeately, has any doctor ever talked with his parents about Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome? You might want to check into that. My son suffered from it his whole life... much less now that he is in his late twenties, but occasionally even now.

Awww.. The tummy bug is no fun for anyone - and it passes around so easily.

I am a SAHM, and when my kids were little they very seldom got sick. But...when the first one when to school, we were sick all the dang time. She brough home every bug known to man, or so it seemed at the time. I remember one night having 3 kids throwing up at the same time. What a MESS!

The upside - the younger kids seemed to get an immunity and once they started school - they seldom got sick.

I hope you are all feeling better at your house soon.

Grant will probably be a tired little boy for a day or so. It seems to take the wind out of their sales for 24 hours after they are done throwing up.

Thanks for all the advice everyone. Had I have known yesterday morning he was actually sick like that, I wouldn't have given him the milk. With the diarrhea, he's had it occasionally out of the blue before and been fine so I didnt think it was anything more than that. But he hasn't had any milk since, although he really wants some. Fortunately, he really likes water so he seems to be staying hydrated.

He went to bed early last night and slept all the way through until about 6am this morning, which really surprised me. I thought for sure he'd wake up not feeling well, but I think his little body just needed the sleep. He seems fine this morning. He wanted some toast so he ate that and some water. I'm starting him easy on the food, I'll stick with the BRAT diet or similar today just to be sure.

Now, if it stays away from me, I'll be set. I do think I might be getting my husbands sore throat but if that's all I get, I'll be happy. I think! LOL

NOTHING worse than the stomach flu! I hate it so bad! Last time Maddie had it she was still in this area and they put her in the hospital on account of her history with HUS. Then of course she finally hadn't threw up for a few hours and sent her home. DS had her cause her Mom had to go to her BF's Grammas funeral 3 hours away....what happens?? Yep, she threw up and threw up and threw up. He called the hospital and spoke to the nurses and they said get Coke! Plain Coke not Diet, open it and leave it sit so its room temp and just give her a few teaspoons every hour. OMG you should have heard my son...LOL "COKE??? oh I don't know about that" She didn't want food and they claimed it would settle her tummy and so he tried it. IT worked!! I will never forget it. I don't know if it would work if the flu was in full force, but towards the end it sure helped her.
Also the RN told me you really don't need to force huge amounts of fluids on her (once she feels better then she can drink all she wants) she claimed just those few teaspoons per hour would keep her from getting so dehydrated again.

The nursing home where my Uncle is has NO visitors because of the stomach flu....I think its awful everywhere!

Stale Coke, yes! Otherwise, clear liquids (apple juice, jello, bouillion, etc). And I was once told by a nurse that sometimes 'salt' sits better then sweet so try Chicken bouillion if the coke or juice doesn't stay down.

We are in the hospital with both Hudson and Hayden having RSV and all sorts of breathing problems. All I can say is Sick Babies Suck:)

I know it sounds strange, but the kids pediatrician told me (35 years ago) to give them sips of flat coke and nothing elese for 24 hours. I thought he was crazy! After all, he was a Navy MD and I didn't have much trust in them! I did it and it worked every single time! BTW he assured me any child can go 24 hours with just sips of fluid and upon resuming a BRAT diet for a few days will be fine. Kathy

Ooohh, you poor thing. I remember nights (and days) with a sick child. I remember having bottles of Triaminic in every color/formula, and Pedialyte, and coke syrup/Emetrol in my medicine chest, as well as various prescriptions for infections. I'd sometimes crawl in bed with a sick child, just so I could keep an eye on her. All I can tell you is, it will end. One day Grant will be all better. The smartesat thing you can do is sleep when he sleeps. It's the only rest you'll get.

What a shame! When little kids are sick, it is so sad. I hope Grant is feeling better soon. And I hope you stay well, you have a big week next week.

Steph...remember someone posted about putting a drop of tea tree oil in a small glass of water and gargling with it for a sore throat.

It can't hurt you....but it tastes funny...

I gave it a try...not for a sore throat, but because I have such awful drainage from my sinuses. I though maybe it would help.

I don't know if it would or not, I only tried it once.

dry toast, applesauce, and banana, are the standard diet for the poos...try in small doses...don't forget just plain sips of water besides the pedilite...(almost room temp, not chilled)

It is so hard at that age. When they get older, they know it's coming, too, and can get to the toilet. But toddlers/preschoolers, it just spews wherever they are! They don't understand, they just see/feel their body doing something very scary and painful. It's hard. Poor Grant! I'm glad he got his rest and is getting back to himself.

The worst night I had was when #4 was about 18 mos, which made the others 3, 6, and 9 at the time. About 4am one of them woke up sick, threw up, about the time I had that one settled back down in clean sheets the next one woke up and threw up. And it continued until all 4 of them had thrown up 3-4 times. It was just constant well into the next afternoon. At first I thought I must have fed them all something bad and went through the kitchen trying to consider the possible problem, but some friends reported the same bug with their kids and DH and I avoided it. Oh, the laundry! Every blanket, sheet, pillowcase, and big beach towel in the house was a mess. I think I avoided that one somehow.

A little girl on DD's gymnastic's team was sick (nauseous, didn't throw up yet) this weekend at while at the gym. Her mom warmed up Sprite in the microwave for the girl to sip before she took her home. She said it works for her kids every time.

I had tree kids, and it was always two that would get sick together, and then one that would be sick a day or two later. All in all, it would be non stop sick and laundry for a week at best.
Then I would get sick. ugh. It was a really tough time.
I hope Grant is feeling much better tomorrow, and that you get plenty of down time.
I know how hard this is and how exhausted you must feel.

If Brent has been sick most likely it's a viral and the bug will have to run it's course. I hope you don't get sick either!

Keep pedialyte in Grant so he doesn't get dehydrated.

He's been totally fine today. He's eating and keeping it down (although all I've let him have is toast, rice and some crackers), he's drinking and is acting like his crazy self.

Guess it was just a 24 hour bug! Brent had totally different symptoms (his are cold symptoms) so who knows what cooties are going through my house.

I'm glad the little guy is feeling better. I hope you don't come down with it. Kids always seem to bounce back faster than the parents.

Oh, I so remember those days when my young children had the tummy flu. Always landed on the carpet, of course! Now that they are all teens, life is easier in that dept. However, I teach preschool so I am always dodging germs!
