The first prize goes to ... Sol's Chocolate Chip Cookies!

OK, so I'm kind of nuts, but I was assigned the job of baking many many many cookies for a big party my daughter was having for her 13 year old daughter. I decided that chocolate chip cookies were the perfect food but used 3 different recipes because I didn't want to make them all the same. So...I chose 3 recipes: one from the NYT food editor, the second one was from a favorite food blog, and the third was...drum roll, please, Sol's. The cookies were on separate plates, and there was a "ballot" so that the favorite could be checked.

The overwhelming vote was for Sol's!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't have pictures because they were gone too quickly for me to change the battery in my camera.

The recipe is below:

Brown Sugar Chocolate Chip Cookies

2 1/2 C. AP flour (I used King Arthur because that's what

I had in the house)

1 tsp. baking soda

1 tsp. salt

2 sticks unsalted butter, room temperature

2 C. light brown sugar, packed

2 large eggs

1 T. vanilla extract

2 C. semisweet chocolate chips

1/2 C. chopped walnuts (optional...I didn't use nuts.)

Whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. In a mixer, cream the butter and sugar till light. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add vanilla. On low speed, add the flour mixture and mix till barely blended. Add the chips (and nuts). Drop onto

a sheet pan and bake in a 350 degree oven, for approx. 12-15 minutes. (Note: I made really large cookies, and so they cooked longer than the suggested time. Also, because of time constraints, I made the dough on one morning and didn't make the actual baked cookies till the following evening...about 48 hours later.)

They were absolutely perfect as evidenced by the opinions of about 45 people.

Thank you for the accolades! Good God, I didn't prepare a speech.

But, I do have a deep reverence for chocolate, and even though I'm not a big fan of Chocolate Chip Cookies (running and hiding), this recipe has been very well received.

And beating the NY Times' recipe shall keep me smiling the rest of the year. Thanks again Mary!

Trudymom, Here's one of the recipes...it's the Lemon Lover's Cookie, and made entirely in the food processor, so it's super easy. I first made these in August 2004, to try out my new convection oven, and they were an instant hit, light and delicate. I added the zest of two lemons to punch up the flavor. Keeping an extra cookie roll in the fridge or freezer is nice to have on hand. I recently visited some friends in New Mexico and took them a bag, along with a few for ourselves. They cookies keep beautifully, and still tasted fresh after 10 days on the road. Lemon Lovers Cookies This is a very delicate cookie, from The Lemon Lovers Cookbook. Plan ahead, though, as you have to leave the dough in the refrigerator for several hours before baking. 1 large lemon, zest of 1 cup granulated sugar 1 cup butter, chilled and cut into pieces (2 sticks) 2 1/3 cups cake flour, sifted 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 teaspoon salt Process the lemon zest and sugar in a food processor until the zest is as fine as the sugar. Add the butter. Process until fluffy. Scrape down the bowl. Add the flour, baking soda and salt. Process briefly until mixed. Form dough into two 1-1/2-inch-round logs and wrap each in wax paper. Refrigerate until firm. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Slice each log into 1/4-inch thick cookies and place on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, until golden around the edges. IÂm sorry to report that IÂve taken a serious break from the Chocolate Chip Cookie quest. The journey has cost me pounds of butter, sugar, and weight, only to realize that each individualÂs pursuit is unique and personal i.e. "my cookie may not be your cookie." That said, IÂm enjoying reading everyoneÂs success and that picture is enough to make me rethink the issue, Jo. Confession: I grew up on Crisco cookies (with the Â½ tsp. Water), with enough cookie to match chocolate, puffy yet chewy, etc., and I loved them. I now make "Marvelous Marble Squares" from my old "The Happy Cooker" Jewish cookbook, which are butter based, chocolate chips swirled on top baked in jelly roll pan. Lizzann, glad you enjoyed the Velveet fudge. It is delicious. My family doesn't question what I make cause they enjoy my cooking. Here's one, that I haven't tried: Chocolate Chip potato chip cookies 1 cup butter 3/4 cup granulated sugar 3/4 cup packed brown sugar 2 eggs 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 tsp baking soda 2 1/4 cups crushed potato chips (I used Lays Classic Potato Chips) 1 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips Directions Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugars until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs. Combine the flour and baking soda and slowly add to the creamed sugar mixture. Mix well. Stir in the crushed potato chips and chocolate chips. Drop by small spoonfuls onto an ungreased baking sheet. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown. If you are making large cookies you may want to keep them in the oven for about 14 minutes. Cool for 1 minute before removing to a wire rack to cool completely.

I thought I was the only one in the world who was not a fan of chocolate chip cookies!

This recipe will go in my file to make with my grandkids though.

Beverly, I'm not fond of chocolate chip cookies either. I want a cookie or I want chocolate or a chocolate cookie! I think Annie is lukewarm about them, too. But I have this recipe tucked away for Alice to make. She is the cookie maker.

I haven't done it but this link has directions for regular ccc and pan ccc from the same recipe. The difference is the baking time and greasing the jellyroll pan. I'd use parchment instead.

DH isn't a fan of chocolate chip cookies, either. I like them when they're homemade, but I don't like bakery or store bought chocolate chip cookies. I'll have to try out Sol's recipe. I bet even DH will go for them.

Jessy, I have baked them in a 11x15...just watch them closely..you want no brown on the edges..or they will be dry..

Good tip Terri, tyvm! I'm actually going to bake this on a perforated pizza round. The kid wants a 'cookie pie' shape.

ta da....only thing I thought of, too late, is that the kid asked for a chewier cookie (shortening) and I used all butter = crispy.

SALT! My family agrees that Sol's cookies are delicious but with a bit of sea salt on top they are to die for!

Doesn't surprise me that Sol's recipe took first prize. All of Sol's recipes are winners.

I love Brown Sugar Cookies, but haven't made them (yet) with chocolate chips. (I'm not a big fan of the CCC either, but once in a while they're kinda' good. I am another fan of Sol's recipes however!)

FYI, just in case anyone wants to know...this cookie recipe (minus the chips) also makes a great tart crust. I filled the last one with peaches and it was Oh So Good!
