Carrier Heat Pump Package unit

My repair guy tells me it has a leak 2 lbs low it is a 2003 Carrier 2 1/2 ton unit and he is assuming that it is the indoor coil which he says with the New Freon stuff is impossible to find he can replace the coil for $1500 which i think is just crazy i hav bought whole units in the past for that

Any of this repair covered by warranty?

I would want a second opinion. Leaks can be located by good and reputable techs. Many leaks can be economically repaired. Some can't.

No warranty came with the house which is part of the reason i bought the house well known unit and at the time acouple of years old

"the sales guy said he would not recommend two-stage units for two story houses because the upper level usually stays hotter when the A/C is running." Simply not true with properly designed and balanced ductwork. In fact, low stage on most 2-stage units is really about 75-80% capacity, so not a huge drop down in airflow. Size of existing equipment, size of proposed replacement equipment, and location would be good to know. Full model numbers are needed for an accurate comparison. I like Trane/American Standard equipment. Your 13 year old coil started leaking most likely due to formicary corrosion (the copper forms pits over time and leaks), like most copper coils. Yours lasted longer than many do. Carrier is using tin-plated copper coils. The Luxaire/York air handler will have a traditional copper coil. Trane/American Standard use all-aluminum indoor coils and a reliable and accurate EEV (refrigerant metering device) for maximum reliability and comfort, which the others do not. For that reason, I would definitely lean toward the Heritage 15. Pair with best matching variable speed air handler (model AAM7). The Heritage 16 has a two-stage compressor. Depending on your home's load characteristic (total heat gain including sensible and latent capacity required), I would recommend it as an alternative over the Heritage 15. Was a load calculation done by any company to determine sizing? You do not want the problems that come as a consequence of oversized equipment. Focus on finding the best company to do a proper installation, starting at proper equipment sizing and including following best practices. $3500 is whole quote, installed. Second opinion guy came today, but the compressor was one big block of ice, so we have truned off the system and running the fan overnight and he will return in the morning. He did say though, that he would be shocked if it was a restriction in the coil. I have no idea what he is basing that on, but he sounded confident as he looked inside the unit. Not that it should matter, but the man today works for a company that deals in carrier products almost exclusively. Im hoping for the best, but mainly just want an honest appraisal of my situation. vaneck Trane is clearly losing its competitiveness both in pricing and performance/eff numbers particularly in the larger size condensers both AC and HP. I would not have the XL16i period. I would not want to leave the fed govt tax credit lying on the table. Well, it would be purchased through a local contractor who has signed up with Costco to provide the service/product. They seem reputable as far as I can tell. No complaints with the ROC. They are a registered Lennox dealer/contractor. We'd just get Costco pricing. We were told the Trane XL14c is about $2500 more. Doesn't seem worth it for this house. We've been comfortable in the middle of summer with the crappy unit we have currently despite it not working as well as it should. The Lennox dealer quoted a Honeywell 3000 thermostat which I see is not programmable (which we need). I didn't ask and don't see the type listed on the Trane quote but it does say programmable. Will need to find out about that. I don't know what a heat strip is.

Your Carrier unit may have a 10 year parts and labor warranty. The warranty needed to be transferred to you from the original owner.

Are you sure your model has the new refrigerant (R410A) and not R22? It would in your favor to have the new R410A since R22 is becoming very expensive. Companies discourage homeowners from fixing leaks. They would rather have you buy a new heat pump.

When you buy a house you can buy a home warranty yourself from a company like american home shield they charge a flat rate for repairs no matter what the repair is on appliances and plumbing and elec. Might be a good idea to get one of those. Heat pumps go out when they are new. Put the serial number in on the Carrier website and ck the warranty on it.

It does hav the R410A and the home warnanty problly would have been a good idea but its past time for that I'll hav to chk the Carrier but as i don't no if it is transferable or not

We have a Carrier heat pump and have found then less than responsive to consumer concerns. Our heat pump (with 2 compressors) has major concerns with the compressors. We've replaced them once already and now they are not working again. The repairman has not a clue and has spent hours trying to get them to work in tandem. We contacted Carrier and they said to contact a dealer/repairman.

I have read many bad things about home warranties. I would not recommend buying one. I do recommend getting an extended parts and labor warranty directly from the manufacturer.

Have to agree with Mike. The nicest thing I can say about third party home warranties including HVAC is they have poor reputations and are problematic.
