The pattern of the tile is fairly common for 12x24 tiles(stock set). However, it should always be discussed with the customer first( with at least a drawn detail of direction and how it is to be installed, Second, worked from the center of the room so it looks balanced to the eye, also if that back part were the wall is in fact a an extremely small shower, then the comment before me is right, you do have MUCH bigger problems. I have been a floor covering contractor for close to 30 years, and no matter how small a project is, it is important for an installer and customer to go over the customers wants( best to get it in writing). One can always show a customer setting patterns with some tiles(as they are not tile contractors. Some customers will say,(you are the expert, do what you feel is best), which can result in customers being upset with the end result.

There are several things that must be considered. I like to use the concept of MOST amount of flooring that follows the general rule. If you have a single room (lets say 10' x 10' = 100sf) and then the REST of the space is much, much larger (say 600sf), you would want to try to keep the MAJORITY of the flooring (600sf) sticking to the rule of "longest length = long run of the room". The other question with hardwood becomes wooden subfloors. Sigh. Wooden subfloors over joists change the equation. Hardwood floors must be run perpendicular to the joists - no matter how big/small the rooms are. So...without knowing your set-up, without knowing your subfloor, without knowing the direction of sunlight, without knowing very much of anything about your situation...the majority of the home should follow the rule of thumb. Unless other factors contribute to changing this. Which I can't tell because there isn't enough information. And just for fun...diagonal is always an option = 15% waste and a more expensive labour bill.

according to quite a bit of online research (now that wood tile has been around a bit longer than this inquiry was asked) the recommendation is that you run wood-look or rectangular tiles the opposite direction you would if it was a wood floor because generally tile is not run through an entire home like wood is. Wood is usually run from the front door completely through the home to the back door to draw you in. For rectangular tiles, running the long end perpendicular to the long run of a room becomes more pleasing to the eye according to Carla Aston Design and other articles I have found. Not only will it make the room or hallway look wider, but it will not look like a bowling alley either due to the width of the tiles versus the narrow width of your typical wood plank.

Thanks for your response. All of the main living areas adjacent to it have 12"x12" white tile from original build in the 90's. The angle of the kitchen cabinet layout follows one of the walls, and maximizes the available counter and island space. The angled island allows for views of the beautiful outdoor setting. Regarding your comment about the install, do you mean install the flooring straight on the full length of the area of the long wide room, knowing the banks of cabinets do not follow the angle of the flooring?
