Food Processor Frustration

I bought mine second hand at a garage sale, it is a small size - not mini but small and I only use it occasionally. Well, today was an occasion and I made some truffles, which were really good once I got it all blended. The ingredients are 1 cup medjool dates, 1 cup shredded coconut, 1 cup pecans, half tsp salt, 1 tsp vanilla (sorry, cant remember recipe site) and coat with melted chocolate - I did half coated with a cocoa and cinnamon mixture (they are so good I had to post the recipe). Oh, and after rolling into balls, freeze for 15 mins and coat.
Is it to much to expect my food processor to blend all this. It kept jamming and I ended up using three appliances plus removing all the dates, soaking them in boiled water, adding one at a time, etc. I ended up with the food processor in the end as the blender just broke it up, and stuck to the sides. Would a good processor just do the deed and it wouldnt be so frustrating. I did this while getting the kids ready for school and I just knew I was ready to either throw an appliance or a kid by the time I was done. My computer is stuck on French so I have no punctuations like apostrophes or question marks. Sorry. And thanks.

I just got a new food processor, Cuisinart 7 cup Prep at Macy's for $60, it would have no problem with that recipe. I have not had a real food processor in years because the last one I had frustrated me so much, I gave it to Goodwill! I have had a Cuisinart Mini Prep for several years, liked it very much but was limited in use. When my friend sent me the link to the 7 cup at Macy's, I researched reviews and prices, and decided to give it a try. HUGE difference in performance between this one and the one I gave away!

I just noticed it is 10% off today!

Silly questions, but will a food processor grate cheese? Like cheddar, parmesan, etc?
And will it chop vegetables for soups?
Hubby does all those chores for my now, because my wrists are so weak.
The only thing I've used my FP for was to make bread crumbs, crush saltines or make ham or chicken salad.

And, is there an attachment that will julienne vegetables? I make a lot of stir fry dishes and I like the slant the vegetables have to them in Oriental restaurants. No way I could do that at home with a knife.

I have both, a basic model Cuisinart made in Japan and a Robot Coupe made in France. Both vintage. Both machines are heavy duty and should be able to handle any duties required in the home. Interestingly the parts from the Cuisinart fit and work on the Robot Coupe but not vise-versa. I suggest that all parts and blades be washed by hand. Do not place these parts in the dishwasher. The heat of the dishwasher drying mode will weaken the plastic of the parts. Also be careful when twisting the lid on and off the bowl to prevent the locking/power engagement pin from breaking. Most importantly DON'T DROP IT! If you have a machine with a malfunctioning locking/power engagement pin you could manually depress the button using a pen or knitting needle. Be careful though as you no longer have the safety measures of the power engagement pin to protect you. The question about 3D printing your own bowl....This is not a viable solution for many reasons including: the plastic used has to be food safe. The bowl needs to be strong enough to handle the torque and stress of day to day use. And the plastic needs to be able to handle heat especially if you use the machine to puree hot items. Finding parts for these machines is difficult. Take good care of them and you should be enjoying your smoothies etc. For many many years. Happy cooking!

I do spend a lot of time in the kitchen baking pies and although I have used my FP often to cut in the fat, I never add the water in the FP. Tried it and didn't like it. I prefer to finish the pastry dough by feel. And more often then not when I want to make a pastry dough I just cut the fat in using the old fashion pastry cutter. Quicker than getting out the big FP. Gardenlad. I make all my own breads and four cups of flour nets me two nice size loaves. Most of the breads I make the French or Italian artisan types, and last year I got into making sour dough as well. Since my FP will handle 6 to 7 cups of flour easily I usually end up with 3 large loaves. Check out Julia Child's simple French Bread recipe in her "The Way to Cook" book. The recipe calls for 3 1/2 cups of flour and will make three 18 inch baguettes or two fat long loaves. Or a couple of large rounds. Since my stone is only 16 inches wide I make slightly smaller baguettes and a third loaf or two larger loaves. I do agree with you though that the dough blade has limited use and unless you do use your FP to make bread dough then you could do without it. Ann

I have a 7 cup capacity. It makes bread with 4 cups of flour, 2 pie crusts, pesto with 2 cups basil and 4 oz parm 2/3 cup oil. It grates 2 cups of carrots at a time and 1/2 a small head of cabbage. Slices 2 or 3 cukes without dumping, and 3 good sized onions for soup. It's the size that suits me best. I have cooked at other people's houses who have a larger one, and a larger one won't mix a small amount as well......won't ealily process bread of only 4 cups of flour nor just 2 cups or pastry dough. ( I put cubes of frozen butter into the processor with the flour and salt...mix in bursts and add the liquid too...) Ideally, I would like 2!! A 14 cupper for big batches of slaw and a double recipe of pesto....but in reality, one is enough and the small one fits the way I cook better than the larger one....and the smaller bowl fits into my dishwasher more easily. I very VERY rarely use the FP for anything that could be considered "liquid"....for that I use the blender or the "boat motor". Linda C

Lars, I rather thought the same thing about the TV cooks. . . but that's a heck of a lot of new equipment they must go through. Wonder if there's place they get rid of it. Hmmmm. . . . No, I really don't care if my f/p looks cloudy. I always am more interested in why it occurs. Along the same lines, my thoughts on when they put stuff in the over doesn't center on the gleaming racks. It's that the sound the racks make when the oven is hot is completely different than the sound they make when it's cold, so you know the oven is cold, even if they take it out later, steaming. I think I've also mentioned before that when I watch Giada the minute she first says "There we go" I quite watching for content and count how many times she says it. You would think I'd have something better to do with my mind, wouldn't you?

Angelaid, you can get discs that do different grates and also one for julienne. And I chop veggies with the regular blade, using the pulse.

Thanks fishymom. I almost ordered it but Macys doesnt deliver to Canada. I was about to create an account and pick it up in the US but with our dollar so low now and duty, the sale price loses it appeal. I will look for an upgraded model here though - so long as it has the power I need. Good to know the bigger ones pack more of a punch.

cookie, sometimes just changing the order and how you add things can help. I would chop the dates a bit first by hand, then pulse the coconut with the nuts in the processor, then pour that mix over the dates to coat them, in a bowl and toss a bit, then into the processor again. Pulse and add everything else.
I recently wanted a speedy quick last minute salsa and knew better but put a few things in without a 2 sec pre-chop. The shallot stuck to the blade, grr, and by the end of it all, way over blended. Had coarse shallots, so i added a few more cherry toms, (cut in half) and more cilantro, yada, not so speedy after all...

Dates are snotty glue. I still have a ton and have been using them allot lately as a sugar replacement. Mine are still on the stems and need to be pitted so i do that chore on a pile of a dry ingredient. In my case it was some blended granola and coconut...
similar recipe but mine also has some puffed rice. Not really an extra step, but chopping a bit on the granola "flour' to coat did help avoid sticky date snot.

Maybe that's why they sold it, it wasn't very good.

I have a smallish one, no-name, kind of old, and while it does a good job on bread crumbs, etc, it doesn't process especially complex items well at all. For that, I use my 35 year old Cuisinart. It's powerful and reliable.

I have a Ninja blender that came with a food processor bowl, and I must say, I'm disappointed as well. I made hummus and guacamole without a problem, but I make apple pancakes on Sunday mornings, and I can't get it to chop a couple apples properly - it leaves too big chunks, even if I stop and move things around once or twice. I remember dcarch saying you want a squarish container to better change directions of moving pieces than a round one would - the one I have is squarish, and I don't know what the problem is.
