Electric heat and HUGE bill

I'm still in shock from our electric bill. The bill was up almost triple the month prior. Yes its been cold, average 15 degrees cooler than the month prior but the usage is huge.

Secondly, I've notice the heater short cycling. It clicks on for a brief time then goes off - then clicks back on to run as usual. This has started earlier this month. It doesn't do it every time but probably several times a day.

I hate the thermostat. But that's a personal thing with me I think! I'm just not sure its all that good / accurate / true.

I will admit I did keep it warmer than I usually do but the weather has forced that. Is a bill (and energy consumption) going up by that much normal? Am I missing something in this picture? Nothing else in the house has changed. I did have several small strands of lights out but not that many and they we're all all that long.

Help me figure this out. I hate the thought of a new unit even though I know energy efficiency wise it would be good. Any thought?
