Best Foods Olive Oil Mayo

Seeing Lars' thread on flavored mayo's reminded me that I wanted to ask if anyone has bought this and how it tastes relative to normal Best Foods. DH is a purist but it's not good for his cholesterol. I wondered if the OO version tastes similar. He hates their lower fat version of mayo, it definitely has a different taste and not in a good way!

We really like it. The only thing is it can't be used in recipes where it will be baked, such as dips etc, as the oil separates and it becomes very oily then.
I've never noticed if there is a big flavour differance, but then I have never done a side by side tasting.

I didn't like it at all. I could definitely taste the olive oil. On the other hand, a friend of mine loves the stuff and thinks the olive oil taste is great.

I have a different questions that relates to the safety questions here. I have a jar of artichoke hearts in the fridge, a big jar from Costco. I've had it for months. It contains both oil and vinegar, and the oil sits in a pretty thick layer on top of the artichokes and brine. Should I be worried about safety, because the oil is creating an anaerobic environment underneath? I've been eating these sporadically in uncooked pasta sauce with no ill effect. Now I want to bake them inside some turnovers to bring to the ALS fundraising walk in my city. Of course I don't want to put strangers at risk, especially not sick strangers. Should I throw out the artichokes and stop buying big jars? If I buy new artichokes, can I assume a newly opened commercial jar is safe, or should I forget the artichokes for this potentially immune-compromised population? Melissa

yeah, anything is possible but the question it what the rate of its prbability to occure. The Clostridium botulinum and its spores HAVE TO be present in the ingredient in the first place to germinate/multiply under certain conditions, IF it has no been destroyed. Unlike many bad bacterium that exist in the air , Clostridium botulinum, is generally soil born and may exist in some see food and animals intestint. Final Word: Botulisim is a fact and deadly too but the occurance of foodborne botulism is very rare. According to FDA and CDC , in average 24 case reported per year in USA. Out which 2 deaths resulted. In the final analysis, one should organize his priorities in the order of their importance. For me botulism is not even in my list. It POSSIBLE that one day I might die of it but it is more likely that I might win the lotto or get striked with a lightening. Seysonn

Too bad about the wine, I always give Clover Hill Spice Holiday wine or their Apple wine, which is out of this world. But I was told wine is expensive to ship when I went to their store at the farm market, which is why I schlepped it on the plane to MI for Thanksgiving. If they drink at all, they will love the apple wine, what's not to like. That stuff is heavan in a cup if you microwave it too. Some apple wine, apples and artisan cheese, OMG I may have to find someone to give this gift basket too!! I got a Penzey's gift spice box one year and I loved it. I love their Vanilla Sugar and Mural of Flavor seasoning mix. That and maybe some fru fru salt and one of their other mixes depending on what type of food they like. I like Penzey's Adobo seasoning, which is onion, garlic, oregano, pepper, a pinch of cayenne, and cumin. All the stuff for chili, Tex Mex and Mexican, except the heat! Once you open the bottle it starts to oxidize. I notice a decline after a month or so, after which I'll use it in cooking up to about five or six months, but for salads and drizzles and all, I prefer fresh. OTOH, in a DARK bottle, keep away changes in temperature and light, sealed, it has the potential to last a very long time. I'm sure that's what Happydog is experiencing with the root cellar. If it makes it through travel, it's fine there. There was a big scandal awhile back about "fake" EVOO from Italy. People were using lab equipment to test the makeup and found a lot of major brands lacking. There were rumors about mafia involvement and a whole lot of other tittletattle, when the culprit was poor handling when it got to the States. If you expose the sealed oil to heat and light, the solids that make it so coveted break down and the result is just olive oil. It hasn't gone rancid. Just ordinary. (I did a lot of research about it awhile back. This is culled from many sources.)

I like the taste of olive oil for salad dressings and such, but I do NOT like the taste in mayonnaise. I like healthy, but we don't use that much mayonnaise, so I will not be buying the one with olive oil again.

I love olive oil....and I know the OO mayo is better for me....but I really prefer the "regular" mayo.

I use Hellman's Canola Oil Mayo (yellow label) - no cholesterol - think it's the same brand as Best Foods...?

Yes, I also liked it but I'm not a big fan of regular mayo, so I was happy with the olive oil flavor.

But what do I know, I liked the fat free Miracle Whip better than the regular stuff (so they promptly quit making it and only make the low fat MW which I do NOT like).
