lost meatloaf recipe

Hello, I hope someone here has a good memory. Many years ago when I was about 12 I was allowed into my mother's kitchen to cook a meal for my parents. This was in Canada and I used one of her American or Canadian cookbooks with a recipe for meatloaf that used a tin of condensed mushroom soup and potato puffs. I can pretty much remember the potato puffs but I can't remember the meatloaf except that it was delicious and I would love to re-create it. This would be about 1957ish. Any ideas out there? I can't even remember the name of the book and I expect my tastes have changed and I'll find it very boring now, but who knows?

Any help out there?

I've never heard of using com soup, but I figured Campbell's probably has a recipe using it, since Campbell's has been around forever.

I found this, it might be similar to what you remember.

Campbell's Best Ever Meat Loaf

1 Can Condensed Cream of Mushroom Soup
or Golden Mushroom Soup
2 lbs. ground beef
1/2 cup fine dry breadcrumbs
1 egg, slightly beaten
1/3 cup finely chopped onion
1 tsp. salt
1/3 cup water

Mix thoroughly 1/2 cup soup, beef, breadcrumbs,
egg, onion, and salt. Shape firmly into loaf
(8x4 inch); place in shallow baking pan. Bake
at 375 degrees for 1 hour, 15 minutes. In
saucepan, blend remaining soup, water, and 2 to
3 Tbs. drippings from pan. Heat, stir
occasionally. Spoon on top of loaf or serve in
gravy dish.

Makes 6 to 8 servings.

Frosted Meat Loaf: Prepare loaf as above; bake
for 1 hour. Frost loaf with 4 cups mashed
potatoes; sprinkle with shredded Cheddar cheese.
Bake 15 minutes more.

Thank you for that, very very close but I don't remember doing anything with a saucepan. It was a long time ago though and I think there may have been some ground pork in there as well. All in all I think this is probably the one.

I use sage in my meatloaf too. I've never thought of adding allspice but I like that idea. Thanks Marymd. Would make it taste similar to the filling for my Tourtiere. Meat Loaf Magnolia ================== 1 1/2 pounds ground veal or mixture of beef and veal 1 small onion finely chopped 1 to 2 cloves of garlic 2 slices Italian/French Bread soaked in milk 2 eggs 1 Tablespoon Dijon mustard 2 Tablespoons chopped parsley 1 tablespoons of dried herbs, (sage and Thyme, a small amount of rosemary olive oil Sauce Green peppercorns mushrooms 1 to 2 cups chicken broth Saute onion in olive oil until soft. Add minced garlic and saute for 30 seconds. Do not brown garlic Soak bread in milk In a large bowl add meat, Dijon mustard, chopped parsley, herbs, onions and garlic and mix with hands. Squeeze bread to break up and add milk and bread to mixture. Mix well and season with salt and pepper. Saute a small piece to check for seasoning. Adjust to taste. Shape meatloaf into a rectangle about 8 X 4 x 3 inches high and place in a small roasting pan. Bake for 30 minutes and then add a small amount of broth to the pan to prevent the bottom from becoming to brown. Bake another 30 minutes and baste with the pan juices. Add more broth if necessary. Cook another 10 minutes or until the meatloaf is nicely browned. Let cool and wrap in foil and refrigerate. Reserve pan juices. Make a sauce by adding some green peppercorns and sauted mushrooms to the pan juices. Heat grill Slice meatloaf into 1/2 inch thick slices and grill on both sides until nicely marked and hot. Just a thought, but I'm assuming it was a newish magazine so try the library because they usually have all the most popular magazines and you normally can check them out if they aren't the newest month's copy. BTW the link to the one posted above sounds really good!

Momo, I found this one at Cooks.com, it has cream of mushroom soup and tater tots, but little else, other than the packaged onion soup mix which would add the seasoning I guess.

TATER TOT MEATLOAF

Tater tot meatloaf

1 lb. ground beef
1 can cream of mushroom soup
1/2 pkg. onion soup
1 pkg. frozen tater tots

TOPPING:

1/4 c. ketchup
1 tsp. mustard
3 tbsp. brown sugar

Combine all in mixing bowl. Form into loaf and bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour. Top with the mixture of ketchup, mustard, and brown sugar which has been mixed together. Put this topping on about 20 minutes before meat loaf is done.

Good luck, I have tried a couple of times to recreate something remembered fondly from my childhood and ended up thinking "what in the world is this stuff", LOL.

This is something a little different than the ordinary meatloaf variations. I recall seeing recipes adding shredded potatoes to it before, but don't recall the puffs/tots version but why not?

Hope you find it and let us know if it's what you remember, and what you think of it.

I imagine you could take a favorite recipe and add some tots to it too.
