New floating Click and Lock floor

I have been doing some research on installing my own floating floor. I've noticed that it is recommended you leave 5/16" around the perimeter for the floor to expand which makes perfect sense.

My question is, can you leave more than that 5/16" along the perimeter? I would like to avoid taking the baseboards up. I was wondering if I could just lay the floor down flush with the baseboard and use the 1/2" gap between the baseboard and my wall to allow the floor to expand (there will be plenty of room under the baseboard for the flooring to float). I would just nail 1/4 round to the baseboard to cover the gap between the floor and baseboard. I am already aware not to nail anything to the new floor.

Hopefully this question makes sense. My baseboards were installed on top of the carpet and pad so there will be a good 1/2" 3/4" gap between the bottom of the baseboards and the original floor.
