Are you good at 'tasting' recipes?

Can you read a recipe and get a really good idea of what it will taste like when it's made? I'm not always good at that. My recent mushroom soup debacle proved it (see dried porcini mushroom thread). I can't tell you how often I have tried a recipe that seemed like it would be good only to be disappointed with the results. After I've made something I wonder why I ever thought I would like it. Not everything I try, but from time to time.

How about you? Can you "taste" a recipe as you read it? I imagine it's a learned skill rather than an inborn trait. I think I am a slow learner!
