Constant leg movement

I have had this annoying problem for a while now that I can't seem to control. While laying down on the couch or bed, my right leg/foot is constantly moving. When I try to stop it by putting my left foot over it, then my left foot does the moving.

I am o.k. when I am driving a car or sitting up-right, it just seems to occur when laying down. It's a sub-conscious little annoyance that's starting to bother me big time.

Any ideas???

When I first saw the title of your post, my first thought was "restless leg syndrome". But your symptoms don't really sound like that. RLS doesn't cause my legs to constantly move.... it's more like a tingly, itchy sensation in the legs that causes an uncontrollable urge to move them. And it doesn't happen just when lying down, but also sitting, and always in the late evening or during the night. Also, putting one foot on top of the other would NOT calm my leg that wants to move; in fact that leg will want to move even more. It is an uncontrollable urge to move the legs. For me, going to sleep is the only relief.

When did your symptoms begin and for how long has this been happening?

It's been happening for probably 2/3 yrs. now. However, I have just recently noticed that it appears to be getting worse -- meaning, that I am just more aware of when it happens. It never hurts or has shooting pains (as seen on the t.v. commercials), and it doesn't seem to matter if it's day or night.

Just weird, and uncontrollable, unless I really concentrate on keeping it still.

Exactly, the paper i pasted from describes the same phenom you have been describing for over 10 years. I have always raged that the big greenhouse media suppliers claim that 30% perlite into a peat is a high porosity mix. And so many growers prefer short squatty containers [helpful for blow over prevention but nothing else] Container Geometry is almost as important as the mix. i remember in 1984 I took a 400 level greenhouse management course at University of Delaware. The prof soaked a rectangular sponge and held it by the edges parrallel to the sink flatwise and let water drain, then he rotated the sponge on the shorter vertical axis and more water drained, when that free drainage ended he then rotated the sponge vertically in it tallest plane and more water drained. When I read your suggestion about using a draping shoelace as draining wick to lower the PWT the distance of the wick, I shouted YES at the elegant simple brilliance. In 1977 I grew a marijuana plant in a milk crate full of gravel, the stalk was over 2 inches in diameter [no different than growing in glass.] BTW, in your gritty mix what are the ratios and actual particle size for each component? I would think to use slightly larger particle sizes than i think you were using and i would probably consider using zeolite or a calcined DE or calcined clay. BTW, Ep minerals makes several absorbents both DE and Clay, Calcined or regular as various spill absorbers available in any auto parts store. 5o pounds for about 10 dollars. Don''t know the particle sizes but likely need to be screened to eliminate the fines. The clays are generally calcium bentonite and not sodium bentonite so less sodium and less swelling. I beileve Arcillite and Tuface are calcium bentonites. I was just thinking that decomoposed granite and even bark add no water holding capacity but with DE and Proper sized ceramics you could add more waterholding capacity but still maintain the airspace. The airspace in the ep mineral clay was pretty low when I measured it last, but I did not screen it. Somewhere I have a spreadsheet with AFP, WHC, TP, TPv, etc for over a dozen components and mixes. I have run quite a few in both 16 oz and taller 32 oz cups, [1 liter exactly when filled to rim overflow which makes that size intuitively easy for all the math. I think i found your posts about 3 years ago and then lost them. Am I correct in thinking you have some water release curve data around somewhere. Someone posted some WRC showing that Axis DE or perhaps the Axis clay media held huge amounts of water but easily released over 75% to the plant. TI can not find that post. I was actually searching for Vertical hydraulic conductivity, Capillary Rise and Capillary rate and wicking when your links showed up. The axis DE is like $90 a bag for 50 pounds so i think I could more cheaply reproduce from other products but have to screen. where I live in idaho, there is a Celatom DE plant less than 60 miles away, 2 zeolite mines, a sodium bentonite mine, WHC and Airspace mid 20s in the 2 larger particle sizess. Also the best white pumice [Hess] source mine a few hours away. I had hoped better water holding capacity. I plan on rerunning all the mixes again in a few months now that i have more standardized my process using multiple cup sizes, some of them tamped or shaken to settle, some top watered, some bottom water, measure distance of subsidence if any. I also have a vegetronix tensionometer now and will take additional measures at various depths to measure the exact tension and also verify depth of pWT which i can usually see through the transparent cups if I use a marking dye and saturate from below. Anyway I will share those spreadsheets in the near future If i were to guess, you have some sort of plant and soil science background or some civil engineering background and a love for plants. At any rate, your explanations and examples are some of the best I have ever come across, and your shoelace suggestion is brilliant, truly. i read so much WRONG advice or the wrong analysis for reason why something works or does not work. it is refreshing to come across accurate information Garret Goyette

Cause of constant outbreak of hives??

My husband went through almost 3 years of these 'hives'. Called angioneurotic edema when a reason such as allegy isn't found. There was never more than a few days between 'attacks'. He had large swellings on every part of his body. (yes, that too) Sometmes it would be just a finger or an eye lid. Other times it would be in a half dozen or more places at once. More often than not he would have it around his waist at the belt line. Heat, cold and pressure seemed to set it off. The worst was when the condition went 'inside' and he would have what semed like severe indigestion and pain in the diaphragm/esopagus. About 3 years into this, he bagan having a different chest pain. It turned out to be angina and a short time later he had quadruple heart bypass surgery. Two days after the surgery, he had his last attack of these hives. It has been 23 years now and he has not had another hive. Were the hives and heart condition connected? I don't think so...but who knows. The propensity to angioneurotic edema, I have read, runs in families. Our daughter in her teens, had a round of it that ran for about a year. She is diabetic, and when she was changed from beef insulin to pork insulin the breakouts stopped. She is 46 now and has had no more problems. Daughter #2 has, over the last 10 years, had maybe 6 or 7 short episodes of it. And 3 of my husbands 6 siblings have had short episodes with it. The only thing that helped anyone was time. They just have to run their course it seems. Husband and daughter were put on a couple different medications, including benedryl, that did not help. Maybe now there is something that will. Do a web search for angioneurotic edema. There is a lot to learn. Much more now than when we were looking for answers for my husband and daughter.

GSD's are known for a few things. A sensitive stomach, having a hard head and allergies, all sorts of them, (food, air born, you name it). They are without a doubt my favorite dog, very guarding, loyal, and basically a "one person dog". It is nothing unusual for puppies to experience what you describe. Their little systems are developing, just like that of a two legged infant. That said, pups need to be monitored carefully for at least the first 5-6 months. What might seem "normal" for a puppy, can rapidly turn into a real mess, literally and figuratively. Make sure you keep your vet informed about what is going on. Research everything that happens to your pup and what vets prescribes and says. Consider making a daily chart of the dogs habits so you can have something to refer to if you run into issues you need to deal with (you will, trust me). There are lots of people who have different opinions about what to feed their dogs. What you experienced may have been part of the problem, maybe not. Who really knows. Given that you are starting to have issues with the ears and stomach, I would just not take a chance and switch to a hypo allergic food (I think venison and potato is best). This is a top quality food you can get only by prescription. Ive used it for 17 years with great success. My old girl who was Lab/Shepard had a corn allergy, it took care of that and Im convinced helped her to live to be 14, even though she had at least three other very serious health issues. I now have two dogs on it, one because of a wheat allergy, the other a Shepard/Hound has the same thing plus a history of UTI that has been under control since September 07 (thank you Sirius God Dog). You mention poop eating and supervision. Your pup should have every second supervision, with a leash when not crated, until she has: Teething and chewing under control, and is house trained, with no accidents for 9 months (aside from illness). Without having these very basic behavior issues under control, she is just not ready for unsupervised freedom. Good luck! SG

I've been taking Neurontin (brand name of gabapentin) for restless leg syndrome for over 15 years. It's prescribed by my sleep doc. I take it every night without fail and never have a problem. I rarely wake before morning but if I do it's for a bathroom visit. I take the brand version rather than the generic because the generic doesn't work effectively for me. Sleep matters were discussed in a recent thread. Anyone who has trouble getting to sleep or staying asleep should see a sleep doctor. The treatments and therapies they provide can be life changing. There's more involved than just personal comfort because the failure to get normal sleep can have a very negative impact on many parts of your body and on your health overall.

I have this also. But it's my smaller three toes on my right foot that twitch, all simutanously. I never knew it until my neice asked me why I keep moving my toes. It seems they do it more when I'm talking or in deep thought and it happens only when I'm sitting with my legs up or laying down (when my muscles are relaxed.)
I also have restless leg syndrome, but this is very different.

Mine happen when sitting and lying down, all the time for past month. Nothing stops them but walking. Even happens when I try to lay down and sleep. Keeping me up at night. Took restless leg syndrome medication but it did nothing for me. No pain or itchiness in legs/feet. Just feel the constant need to move legs/feet. Driving me crazy!!

Its probably a sign that your bored, and if your left leg moves, it means your annoyed. Look up Paul Ekman's macroexpressions and how body language reflects your mood, or thoughts.

I have also had this problem for quite sometime now. I feel like it is some sort of ocd problem or something? It drives my husband crazy and I really can't think of a way to explain it to my dr other than my feet move a lot at night while I'm sleeping. I'm thinking it may have somthing to do with nerves.

Consider your diet first. I have not had that problem but I have had muscle twitching, that disappeared after looking it up and discovering that a lack of magnesium can cause that problem. Very necessary for the muscles and nerves. And it is not all that plentiful in the Standard American Diet. I had already been eating dark leafy green vegetables and thought that should have been a good source of magnesium, but the source I read, said that nuts and seeds have a lot more magnesium in them, so I ate nuts and seeds at every meal and in 24 hours it was cleared up. Raw, organic seeds. Grind them in a coffee grinder, if you have trouble chewing them.

It is amazing how messed up our diet can be. Doing a little research on what is considered a good diet, takes time and effort, but is well worth it. It can get confusing. There is a PBS special called '3 Steps to Incredible Health' that I think is one of the best presentations out there. See if it is coming up on PBS anytime soon. Or they may have a copy in the library.

Organic vegetables and fruits with every meal and nuts and seeds often. Reduce the meat, the dairy, grains and the sweets. That is a simple way of improving your diet to start.

I've had RLS (restless leg syndrome)in the evenings most of my life... & I remember my Mom would move her legs so much while sitting at night. I was told people who had rheumatic fever as a child often got RLS later. I remember as a child wrapping my legs in warm towels as my legs 'hurt' so much & was told it was 'growing pains'(!) but as an adult I was diagnosed with RLS & put on L-dopa -a Parkinsons drug- & it has helped the RLS a lot! This constant feeling of the urge to move/jerk my legs is awful ... no cause for RLS or cure but thankfully some help!
